Special Teams QC Coach Nate Ebner (3x Super Bowl Champ, USA Rugby)

Nate Ebner eyes return to Olympics on United States National Rugby Team

Nate Ebner has played in and won three Super Bowls, but the sports spectacle that most captivated him was disconnected from football and took place in another hemisphere.

As a member of the United States National Rugby Team, the Giants' veteran safety participated in the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games Rio 2016.

"You're on a different continent in a country where they don't even really speak your language," Ebner said last week. "We're in a two-hour opening ceremony where all these countries come through – obviously, the United States is one of the last ones as a 'U.' When the United States came out, the roar that I heard in that stadium gave me chills, like nothing I've heard before. When you're in a different hemisphere of the world and they're cheering for you like that, it shows you what you represent and it's a lot bigger than you. To be a part of Team USA is extremely special and being from this country and what it means to be an American, and those things really resonated with me in the opening ceremony."

This article is similar to one above; but it contains an additional interesting "tidbit":

It will all add to a remarkable personal story which Ebner will tell in an autobiography due out in May, under the subtitle A Father’s Code and a Son’s Path. Jeff Ebner was murdered 13 years ago. Ebner has since worn a bracelet featuring his father’s motto, now his own book’s title: Finish Strong.

Speaking to the Guardian in 2016, as he first aimed to return to rugby, he said: “I think Dad would be proud of me and I’m proud he was my Dad.”

“To be quite honest, it wasn’t really something I was thinking I wanted to do or would do, but through the offseasons of going back to Ohio State and training, Urban and I crossed paths quite a few times and eventually, at one point after the Olympics, having an All-Pro year and winning the Super Bowl, Urban was like, ‘You need to write a book,’” Ebner recalled. “And I kind of laughed at it, but it was cool that he thought that. And then the following year, 2017, I was having a pretty good year but ended up tearing my ACL in November against the Dolphins, and when I had that time to think about what I wanted to do in that timeframe as I was rehabbing, I thought ‘This would be a good time to write that book Urban was suggesting I do.’”

Above all else, “Finish Strong” is about Ebner’s relationship with his father Jeff, who was Ebner’s idol and best friend until he was murdered during a robbery attempt at his auto salvage yard in 2008.

Jeff Ebner never got to see his son play football for the Buckeyes – the attack happened just one day after Nate told his father he was going to walk on at Ohio State and pursue an NFL career – but the lessons Nate learned from his father have inspired everything he’s accomplished since, and that’s the biggest thing he hopes readers will take away from the book.

“I hope parents read this book,” Ebner told Eleven Warriors. “I think I had the greatest leader of all-time in my dad, and a lot of that book speaks to that relationship. I think there’s a lot of great talk about how to build strong relationships and a strong foundation with your children just through the experiences I talk about. There’s no special recipe; it’s just spending time with your children and giving them all the love that you have.”

This will be the 10th season in the NFL for the former Ohio State walk-on after he spent his first eight seasons with the New England Patriots where he won three Super Bowls and was a second-team All-Pro in 2016.

With Ebner's addition to the Gaints' roster, the Buckeyes now have 51 former players on active NFL rosters heading into the 2021 season – good for second among all teams, behind only Alabama's 53.

Ryan Day Announces Addition of Former Player to Ohio State Staff

The reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes have added a former player to their coaching staff before their 2025 college football campaign.

On Monday, head coach Ryan Day announced the addition of former Buckeyes safety/special teams star Nate Ebner, who will now serve as a special teams quality control coach in Columbus.

Ebner was on the field coaching for Ohio State's first spring practice on Monday.

"This is a guy who was really self-made and turned out to have a great career in the NFL," Day said on Monday. "He was a big part of special teams. He can have an impact on the safety room. He can have an impact on special teams. He's somebody that's now trying to make the transition from player to coach, so it's great to have him around."

Ebner, a walk-on for the Buckeyes, spent three seasons in Columbus from 2009-11. He went on to join the NFL ranks as a sixth-round draft pick for the New England Patriots. After eight seasons playing under head coach Bill Belichick, Ebner finished his professional career with two seasons with the New York Giants.

Through his time in New England, Ebner developed a relationship with now-Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

Ohio State has added another former Buckeye and NFL player to its coaching staff.
An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed to Eleven Warriors on Monday that former Ohio State safety and special teams standout Nate Ebner has joined the Buckeyes’ staff as a special teams quality control coach. Ebner was on the field coaching during Ohio State’s first practice of the spring on Monday.
Ebner, who went on to play in the NFL for 10 seasons despite being a walk-on for the Buckeyes, joins an Ohio State coaching staff that also now includes his former defensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, Matt Patricia.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said Monday that Ebner brings credibility to the coaching staff. He looks forward to seeing Ebner grow into his role with the Buckeyes.
"This is a guy who was really self-made and turned out to have a great career in the NFL," Day said. "He was a big part of special teams. He can have an impact on the safety room. He can have an impact on special teams. He's somebody that's now trying to make the transition from player to coach, so it's great to have him around."
