It is different when you are seriously referring to a whole portion of the country as a stereotype just because of where they live.

So I can blatantly insult the entire state of Michigan--despite the fact I've never set foot in the state--simply because it's next to Ohio, and yet I cannot state actual, sustained, first-hand observations of an area far, far smaller than Michigan (keep in mind I was referring to Gainesville and subsequently the towns nearby) simply because it's not next to Ohio. Tell you what, why don't you define "whole portion of the country" for us?

If you're visiting GBW, and the fans there refer to Columbus residents as all being drunken rapists... you'd have no problem with their comments? Heck they've got cold, hard stats on their side with that hateful stereotype.

The "whole portion" is the south. Secondly, I was claiming that I don't think most people on here truly believe Michigan is inferior or breeds less intelligent people than Ohio.

Show me where I was referring to the "south".

Uh, Mister Argue-just-to-argue, don't you think there's a significant difference between calling a group "in-bred rednecks" and "rapists"? One is a categorization and the other is a heinous crime. Besides, who gives a fuck what anyone says on GBW? And no one else here is getting their knickers in a knot about my Gainesville statement than you and bigbawlin'...

Get off your high horse already...

The south was what the initial argument was revolving around. It was not merely pointed at you.

Cool, then. There are many places in Florida, and other southern states, where there is little to no "back woods Jim Crow" mentality (Satellite Beach is one such place). But the Gainesville area is different, and that's what I was saying.

I understand and I am biased being born in raised in Florida, and I am moving to Gainesville next semester. I think a lot of it is people are quick to judge something they either dislike, or merely know nothing about.

I guess I'd feel about the same being called a rapist or a KKK member, given the historical stigma and actions of that group. I grew up in a former KKK headquarters for my area of PA and one of my best childhood friends endured some awfuls tuff for his skin tone, so I'm probably a little sensitive to that group.

There was way too much racism in my childhood hometown, but referring to everyone from there in that manner is still weak sauce and offensive in my book. Calling everyone from gainesville a bunch of white trash racists isn't much different/better than the UF attitude that was being called out in this thread.

It rubbed me the wrong way, but after posting my response I edited it too much. I should have just been direct with my thoughts.
Besides, who gives a fuck what anyone says on GBW?
So that wouldn't bother you in the least if someone said it to your face? It sure would bother me...

If it were merely a commentary on Gainesville (on the Open/Poly boards) that's one thing, but it was used to directly slam those from that area... specifically UF fans.
And no one else here is getting their knickers in a knot about my Gainesville statement than you and bigbawlin'...
I guess JO better take down his thread: Great Opportunity

There were plenty of ways to put that flamer in his place without trashing the civil UF fans that have stopped by.
