Southern Cal 26, Washington 20 (final)

Yeah WTF was up with that ending! I saw the WR go down with 7 seconds left, then let the clock wind down to 2 seconds! What the hell is that? How did nobody notice that?

... Still it was Washingtons fault. They had an eternity between the clock starting up the clock again and those idiots couldn't decide on a play? Uhh why didn't they have two plays called earlier? Idiots.

Washington should have been able to run a play, but the Pac 10 refs are continuing to display that there is no accountability of officiating on the field, or else none of these guys would have jobs.

I will not move USC (from #6) past anyone but Auburn this week.

TSK,

It was a total screw job by the refs, but, as much as I'd like to see USC get their asses humped, I have to find some joy in the fact that your hated Huskies got dumped. And as always:

GO BUCKS
GO COUGS

What more does Washington need, an invitation? First, they refs basically hand them a free timeout. They gave Washington time to call a play.

There is no way the WR was down at 7 seconds. I have a clear shot of him still on his feet at 6 seconds. The angle sucks, but it looks like he possibly fumbled at 5 seconds and recovered. at ~2 or 3.

It wasn't as much of a screwjob per se as it was the refs congregating in the middle of the field and not running the game the way it was supposed to be.

As for the time, I watched 4 football shows on 4 different networks, and they all said the receiver was down with the 1st with 5 seconds left...but I guess USC fans can believe what they want. In any event, they also all agreed that while they didn't "hand the game" to USC, they definitely sucked at the end with the way the time was handled.

The replay I watched showed the ball pop up after the receiver was down and the ref's saw that and let the clock run from 5 to 2 secs. Be that as it may , the Huskies weren't ready to snap the ball and looked like they werent even in a hurry. They could have gotten another play off, but they didnt get set or anything before the refs put the ball in play
I loved the way Carroll was going nuts on the sideline :)

NO. 3 USC 26 WASHINGTON 20
Time runs out on Washington in bid for upset
Trojans hold on to run Pac-10 win streak to 26

LOS ANGELES ? Those underdogs from the Northwest gave Southern California all it could handle the past two weeks.
John David Booty threw for 243 yards and a touchdown and No. 3 USC held off resurgent Washington?s late threat in a 26-20 Pac-10 win yesterday.
The Huskies drove to the USC 15 but couldn?t get off a play before the final two seconds ticked off the clock.
Last week, the Trojans needed an interception near the end zone on the last play of the game to win 28-22 at Washington State.
"That was a hard-earned win, just like last week," USC coach Pete Carroll said.
"They (the Huskies) did a good job and are going to win a lot of games in this conference. I?m impressed with the job Tyrone has done. They?ve had a quick turnaround," Carroll said of second-year Washington coach Tyrone Willingham.
The Trojans? last loss in the Coliseum was to Stanford in 2001, when Willingham was the Cardinal coach.
"This is the best game we?ve played this year," Willingham said. "Our team is improving. The last drive, we just needed a few more seconds and we would have gotten the job done."
The Trojans extended their conference-record victory string to 26. Overall, USC has won 50 of its past 52.
Mario Danelo kicked four field goals for USC (5-0, 3-0), including a 21-yarder with 1:34 left for a six-point lead.
Reserve quarterback Michael McDonald?s 20-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith on a fake field goal try on the Trojans? first possession put them ahead to stay.
David Booty, who went 23-of-40 passing with an interception, said, "When it comes down to the last play, like it did last week, it?s a little tough to take. Our ?D? stepped up when we needed it."
The USC defense aside, it was the clock that ended the final threat by the Huskies (4-2, 2-1).
After throwing two 6-yard touchdown passes, the last pulling the Huskies to 23-20 with 10:06 left, Isaiah Stanback marched them down the field again in a drive that started at the Washington 20 with 1:34 remaining.
Stanback?s 19-yard completion moved the ball to the USC 15, but the Huskies had no timeouts remaining. The clock stopped while the chains were moved, then the officials spotted the ball but huddled for several moments before starting the clock with two seconds remaining.
The Huskies couldn?t get a play off in time.
Willingham didn?t complain about the way the officials handled the clock, but Carroll did.
"The last play was a mess," Carroll said. "It was almost like a timeout for them. The clock was mishandled. They should move the sticks and immediately start the clock."
Patrick Turner had 12 catches for 116 yards for USC against the Huskies, including a 17-yard touchdown pass from Booty in the second quarter. Stanback completed 17 of 38 passes for 212 yards. Sonny Shackelford had nine receptions for 125 yards.

How is washington supposed to snap the ball when the @%^$& ref is standing over the ball doing God knows what. What a cluster...
Do they take an officiating test or something?

He's supposed to do that while the chains are moved. Washington should have been lining up while he was standing there, and the snap would have been in time.

I disagree. Had he put the ball down as soon as the chains were moved, I think Wash would have been ready. Instead they waited for eight years, Washington began to relax b/c the refs were having a conference, and then all of a sudden the delay was over and they started the clock. After making both sides wait so long, you'd think the ref would make a more clear restart signal.

Yes, Washington should still have been on alert for a clock restart. However, the confusion was definitely caused by the refs delaying play for an inordinate amount of time.

The real problems were 1) the clock ran from 5 seconds down to 2 after the receiver was down. That caused 2) Willingham to rush onto the field and grab the attention of the officials which caused 3) the officials to have an impromptu conference regarding the clock (why they couldn't ask the replay official for the correct clock at that point I don't understand) which caused 4) Washington to not know when the clock was going to start.

With 2 seconds left, a quick snap at the whistle could still allow a spike followed by a clock stoppage. I've seen plenty of games where only one second runs off after a spike.

There was also a point at 0:34 where the clock was stopped after a timeout. Washington received a false start penalty, but the clock started to wind and stopped at 0:32. Since the ball should've never been in play, the clock should've gone back to 0:34. The TV seemed to show it stay at 0:32 for the next play, but maybe the TV was just wrong.

I'm curious to know, does the Pac-10 use home team clock keepers, or do they go with a neutral party like the Big Ten?

Not that it mattered, but in the Iowa OSU game, when they reversed Ted's catch, they should have put 13 seconds back on the clock in the 3rd Q. After he made the catch, they spotted the ball, started the clock, time expired.. then they ruled it a no catch. If he didnt' catch it, the clock should have stopped on the incompletion.

My point in this, of course, is to say that these officials need to be paying closer attention to what's going on. The "new clock rules" seem to have everyone flubbing up.
