I found this gem on wearesc.com, apparently we don't get much respect in some quarters.

"Ohio State has a serious talent gap with USC. I think both in coaching and players. Their coaching staff has no new blood, every coach but one having been on the staff in some capacity since 2005, and that one joined them in 2007.

Several of the coaches have only coached in Ohio; Akron, Miami, Ohio, high schools, before landing at OSU. It doesn't appear any have coached at major Div 1 schools before landing with Tressel. Nobody has coached in the SEC, Florida, Big 12, PacX, so they have limited contacts for recruiting."

Has USC choked on the national stage?

I agree with ant.

Truth be told we only choked once and that was in 2006.
We weren't supposed to be in the MNC in 2007. Everyone else's imcompetence led us to go there.
We lost Beanie which completely deflated our offense in 2008. And we played decently against Penn State and Texas.

So one choke 3 years ago is hardly worth changing the situation for this game IMO

I for one, don't think the sky is falling.

I had a chance to rewatch the first half earlier today (will get to the second hopefully in the next day or two). Obviously the second half is where things went a little haywire. That said, this is a young team, and my impressions from the orginal airing of the game were that we let up and that the offensive line didn't play very well.

Impression #1

We did let up. The fact that Tress decided to go for it on 4th and 2 tells me as much. If he thinks that the Middies have any chance at that point, he kicks the FG. If Tress thought it was over, I guarantee that our freshman and sophomores did too. Chalk it up to a lesson learned. The close battle has certainly helped the buckeyes before (02). And no, I wouldn't compare it to Ohio from last year for a couple of reasons. First of all, we played very well for a while in this game. After the 1st navy drive they had only 15 yards and a couple of turnovers the rest of the first half. Secondly, the offensive line didn't play as poorly as they did against Ohio last year.

Impression #2

This one was totally false. I thought the O line got pushed around all day. After rewatching in slow motion (I love DVR), what happened was clear to me.

A little of it was blown assignments. Cordle and Brewster both got blown up at least once in the first half and the left half of the line played very well. On the first drive, boom gets stuffed going off left tackle, but it was brewsters man that disrupted the play. Miller had turned his guy, and Boren had already gotten a chip and moved downfield to snag a backer. The hole was HUGE! (except the DT that brewster blew up).

Obviously this doesn't mean everything's ok. It seems to me that it speaks more to consistency not talent or drive though. The line actually played pretty well as most of the pressure was caused by...

Our RB's seemed to have no idea what they were doing in pass protection. The overwhelming source of pressure was not from down lineman but from backers who should've been picked up by one of our FR fullbacks or boom and saine. It will be nice to have Jermil Martin back!

In the run game, it's not too different of a story, IMO. Many of stuffs, or 2 yd gains I saw (again, only from the first half) were on the RB. I love boom and saine, as they are both running really hard and plowing over and through guys much bigger than they are. What I saw was an occasional lack of vision, a little hesitation in the hole at times and failure to read blocks properly in a couple of instances.

No we didn't impose our will, but to get my jab in at Mark May---they didn't have anyone on their "heels" all day except the ladies in the shoe trying to look demure for all of the men in uniform!

The fourth and two is a blackeye, but it was the exact play we had just run (i think so anyway) and that kind of playcalling speaks to the fact we (Tress included) were a little cocky. That kind of failure can serve as a lesson, and a hard fought game against a disciplined team that demonstrated for the buckeyes what it means to NEVER QUIT can only help us in the long run.

Do we beat USC--I don't know, but I like our chances, and not because of barkley, night game, home crowd, etc. I think we have the talent and the will to compete. People shouldn't mistake youth and bravado that allows a lesser but more disciplined opponent to hang around for a lack of talent.

Is USC gonna come in the 'Shoe and embarass us? Heeeeeellllllll no! We are not San Jose State. We are The Ohio State University Buckeyes and will not just roll over and accept the loss that so many suddenly seem so willing to take for granted.

Our D line will get pressure (SJST sacked barkley twice i think?) pryor sacked O times. we played a quality opponent, check. Barkley video highlights watched where he made easy one read throws to a tight end or tailback five yards down the field over and over and let his athletes break tackles to pad his stats...check. Many of those throws were also behind, or high, etc. He certainly isn't as accurate as Pryor, or at least not any more accurate.

Anderson Russel does make me a little nervous, but only because of the mental aspect. The kid can play, he just needs to remember it.

Brian Rolle is a Human Missile that is going to wreak serious havoc this week.

Our DT's need to do a better job of getting low and holding the line *(we did a pretty good job of this for the most part--except the two long td drives).

Our DE's and outside linebackers need to not get sucked in and whoever has outside contain needs to be committed to that first and foremost.

The gimmick offense certainly kept us confused, and I think our D line is achin to pin their ears back and play a traditional style offense with a true FR quarterback behind center. Not saying we annihilate them, just that if I'm Thad (DEM), i'm drooling over the licks I know I'm gonna get in one way or the other.

Everyone just relax.

We will be fine. Win or lose, I refuse to pull the stunt that the CPD has done in their give up and roll over article. This crap is unconscionable, and I can't wait to see that guy eat every left over copy of this article.

Even if we don't win, we ARE an elite program and capable of competing.
I think we do win, especially after being reassured by actually watching the game in slow motion and seeing what actually happened with the O line...our favorite scapegoats.

Now as long as I don't watch the second half :)

GO BUCKS

BEAT USC

LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FIELD

Doesn't this describe Ken Norton?

Before the game against Florida in January of 2007 there was nobody writing these lengthy explanations as to how inadequate OSU's coaching staff was and how OSU lost every big game they played in. Why? Because Tressel won nearly every big game he coached in before that game. Have things changed that drastically? It's possible but I think we've just simply hit a rough patch.

Like I said on another thread, it's not terribly easy to win 5 conference titles and 3 BCS bowls even in the Big Ten. The idea that you can get 'lucky' and do that is mistaken.
I wouldn't say this is agreeing, and Rob Hill seems to be quite the negfative nancy, looking at his posts.

I see it a bit differently. Both teams have a lot to lose. Both quarterbacks do too.

Ohio State is in a rebuilding year. USC comes into the game a solid favorite. Everybody expects USC to win.

Barkley has a lot riding on this game, too.

And your point is what? Does the lack of respect get smaller if two Buckeyes agree?

I suspect it is a lot more than two Buckeyes.

This resume talk is fairly ridiculous.

Jim Bollman is easily the most criticized coach on the staff, and he coached for the Bears, Eagles, MSU, Virginia, NC State.

Luke Fickell is a great position coach and recruiter. He has 1 year at Akron (DL coach) on his resume, and the rest is OSU, since 99.
Etienne Sabino, Travis Howard, Andrew Sweat, Lamaar Thomas, Keith Wells & Nathan Williams in 08. Only 1 was local, the other 5 were OOS and big time prospects. Heyward the year before that was pretty impressive, as was Mark Johnson (OSU usually whiffs in Cali) & Larry Grant.
Jim Heacock has done a good job with the DL & defense. He hasn't had the athletes up front that Dantonio had, but he's put together some pretty strong defenses. The 05 unit that shut down Vince was pretty impressive. There's even a case to be made for the performances by the 06 unit, which had a lot of weaknesses that they compensated for most of the year.

Darrell Hazell was the star of the coaching staff a few years back, and has developed a ton of pro prospects at WR. His resume is pretty mediocre, but we'd all be sad if he left.

Joe Daniels has a pretty good resume of coaching gigs, and did a nice job developing Troy. I don't think you can really claim Krenzel or Boeckman were the best prospects to develop. Daniels is still on the staff in a limited role, due to health complications.

As for his replacement, Siciliano, I'd say he's done one of the better coaching jobs this offseason in developing Pryor into a more complete passer, particularly considering where he started.

Sounds like message boarders making foolish assumptions once again.

Wonderful. The chicken little syndrome is no stranger to this fanbase, is there some value to their displeasure?

Throw in the fact that the Buckeyes have been just fine with their "limited recruiting contacts" in getting looks and signing some pretty elite HS prospects, and I think maybe they protest a bit too much.

Getting pumped for the game. I am hoping that tOSU was overlooking the Midshipmen and got caught with there hand in the cookie jar. Im hoping both lines can not miss assignments and stick to the game plan. Our D cant let a freshman QB embarrass us like teh Dirty did last year. And i think we can all agree, he has chance to be a NFL Stud...We know USC is a good team with alot of depth. I think its time for The Vest to be the Vest of old when those games we had no chance to win, we won. The Vest did what he had to do. I can think of at least 5 games in the past that he won and shut people up, its been awhile and for christs sake, we're DUE!!!

Not when you can't hear a snap count or the play in the huddle. Or when your QB is a freshman and has 100,000+ booing him .... Wait until he gets his ass blasted in the 1st QTR and the crowd erupts and on the next play his team-mates can't even hear the playcall and he walks up to line thinking what the [censored].

Just something about picturing this site and hearing this in the Shoe gets the blood pumping, doesn't it? If Thad gets one hit on Barkley the way he got 3-4 on Colt I truly believe this is what we all could witness. I don't know how calming that thought can be unless you are ignorant to what you are going into. And I'm sorry, I have been to many College venues and the Shoe is one that can't be duplicated with "pumped in" crowd noise. And it only gets louder with one Big Hit or Big Play.

I guess I've just been so used to being let down in big games these past few years that it's hard to get up for this game. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see us coming close to winning this one. :( Prove me horribly wrong, Bucks!

To be clear, I'm not saying this coaching staff is without fault. There is certainly valid criticism to be made about the offense at times, but I don't think resumes have anything to do with it. There are too many no-name coaches who have done very well here to buy that.
