I've got to be completely honest here: I hope that fire burns the [censored]ing Rose Bowl down. I hate that goddamn building. "Grand daddy of them all!" "Oh the pageantry!"

No. [censored] it. I'm tired of having Big Televen teams fly 3,000 miles to play against teams that drive 2 miles to the stadium and watching them get jet lagged into oblivion. Backyard bowl games are fun for precisely 3 states: California, Louisiana, and Florida. All three of them can sit and spin. Let that bitch burn.
Ehh..
..

So would you rather they just play in the Coliseum? Or maybe in San Diego or something?

Fact is, New Years Day is almost always ridiculously perfect in Southern California. The bowl, just as all the others, are about money. And people like traveling to warm areas during the winter. As well as visiting Disneyland, etc.

And it's not like Ohio State hasn't won plenty of times in the Rose Bowl. I don't think it's really about the travel time. They get here with plenty of time to enjoy themselves and get over the jet lag.

USC is in great position with Henderson, Powell and Jeffcoat. 1, 4 and 5 respectively.
Prater is number 2 and committed.
Seastrunk is possible but not as likely as the other 3. thats rivals top 5.
Number 9 robert woods is committed.
With all that talent, USC should be on a six-year undefeated streak right now. So, what's the problem? Poor coaching? Overrated recruits? Or maybe there really isn't much difference between the #2 and the #200 kid in the country....

I'm pretty certain it's been covered, but USC plays their games in the Colesium, which is adjacent to USC's campus. UCLA plays theirs in the
Rose bowl. However, based on the past performances (what, last 5 years?) USC has appeared in the Rose on New Years' Day.....almost a home game.

Anyone else worried that Petey is trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes by saying that OSU is going to bring the house against their poor freshman qb, and that is too much to expect him to weather the storm? Sounds to me like Petey is trying to deceive Tress & Co, cause all Barkley has to do is to start to fade back, and hand off to one of his 5* running backs (doesn't matter which one) on a delay, to tear off a big run behind his O-line full of 5* linemen? Then once the D-line has been burned once or twice and do a controlled rush, he can fade and throw to his 5* wideouts.

If that doesn't work, he's got a seasoned SEC-veteran (Mustain) ready to work behind that same line, ala Sanchez last year. I'm betting that Petey had Mustain do alot of reps under the bleachers after practice, so the news hounds couldn't see him......

I'm still betting a bunch of v-cash that OSU will beat USC, but I'm not buying Petey's hype. Pretty sure that Tress & Co aren't either, and I'm hoping that they can sell the players on that as well (last I heard, coaches don't suit up). Coach Carroll hasn't lost a game by more than 7 points in how many years? Don't think that this is going to be the first.

OSU-17 USC-12

Its a whopping 15 miles away. It would be like playing USC at Dublin Coffman stadium and trying to claim its a neutral site.

Given the outrageous hype given to Barkley in practices, ESPN, their front page, no. Your last two lines are precisely what we expect now, a strong running game and play action. It just comes down to how well our D handles it.

Back to the Prater commit, I do think it's worth noting that Prater expressed interest in OSU but OSU never did offer. OSU is in the extreme minority here of course in the evaluation of Prater but given the record of both staffs in identifying/producing WR talent it's hard not to trust OSU over USC.

Since 2004, USC has had 5 WR's drafted:
  • 1 1st rounder
  • 3 2nd rounders
  • 1 3rd rounder
OSU has had 8 WR's drafted:
  • 4 1st rounders
  • 1 2nd rounder
  • 1 4th rounder
  • 2 5th rounders

Hearing this game may be USC's first... Looks like there's a good chance their game with SJSU will be postponed due to the fires...

May be a false alarm on this one... Still checking.

Now that would be interesting. Both good and bad for OSU. Good in the sense that Barkley may not have that "Welcome to college football" game against a lesser opponent in SJSU, rather that game would come against OSU in the Horseshoe, but bad in the sense that the OSU staff will not have much film to study beginning Saturday evening to begin preparation for the upcoming week.

If this game does indeed get cancelled, I wonder if coach Carroll mixes up the QB situation even more come game night in Columbus?

Regardless of whether or not this is USC's first game, we're going to get a barrage of superlatives and stories about how a true freshmen is starting a game for USC in the 'Shoe. Mrs. Hawk will be so jealous of his coverage. I don't know that a single game against SJSU is really worth much in terms of experience; it's better than nothing, I guess.

... wow. that is some theory.
I'll just say that nobody around USC thinks Mustain is getting major playing time with Barkley and Corp around. He's a distant third on the depth chart. He may play some cleanup duty.

And USC's practices are open, they don't hide any of the snaps Mustain takes...

I think you might be thinking of UCLA's first game. The fires are pretty close to the Rose Bowl, but the main issue is air quality.

I could definitely see UCLA's first game getting postponed but I haven't heard much about USC's game getting delayed that way. I could see air quality being a factor but I would be VERY surprised to see that game get delayed.

It's also the home stadium of city rivals. One of the main advantages of a home game is familiarity with the field, the locker rooms, the sounds the stadium makes, etc. Pre-bowl season, USC only plays in the Rose Bowl once every other year.

Obviously if you had to choose between the two you'd say USC would have the advantage due to the lack of travel time. They've certainly played there more often than the Buckeyes or any Big Ten team. But At the same time, I think it goes kinda far to call it a "home game." The Coliseum is our home.
