South Bracket Discussion

Welcome and a funny comic to go with it...

What are your thoughts on your second round(Nevada/Creighton) and 3rd round(aTm, Louisville) match ups...

You guys struggled in non conference against some of the higher rated seeds in the tourney...

Nevada will have their hands full with Creighton, but whichever one emerges, we will handle 'em easier than most think. Our 3 losses were early in the year, and we are playing much better than we were then. You gotta remember also, those were all early road games. I would take us in a rematch with any of them in a heartbeat, but of course, I'm a little biased.:)

I think Louisville will take A&M in Lexington. If not, A&M will be tough in San Antonio (which is where I live), but we are better defensively than they are, and much more athletic. Acie is all they have. We play better as a TEAM. We win this one as well.

Welcome to BP. Nice to have competitive views. If you have time we would like to invite you to outline your picks in each region. We need input from other areas and appreciate yours. What matchup problems do you see for Memphis in your games?

I agree on Creighton giving Nevada a game b/c I have them winning and then beating you guys as well...:wink2:

I also agree about aTm losing to Louisville, but what I don't agree with is that Law is all A&M has. They have a very good all around team and can hit you from all angles...

Sorry if any of this has already been posted, I read the first few pages and the last one but was too lazy to read the middle.

It's going to be really interesting to see how A&M does in the tourney, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a horn. They are probably the most physical team in the bracket, if not the whole tournament. And it's out of necessity.

I think the refs determine how far they go. Not sure which crews are going to be calling their games, but it's pretty likely that whoever does will not be used to their style. It can go either way- either they call it close and A&M has 3 guys foul out, or they call it loose, which would let A&M completely dictate how things go on both ends of the floor. I'm going to be paying close attention to how their first game goes.

After playing these guys twice this year, and watching them numerous other times, here's my take on their individual players, for what it's worth,

Law-nothing much really needs to be said here. Probably the most clutch player in the country. If it's a close game towards the end of regulation (or overtime, or double overtime), he WILL shoot, even if he's triple teamed. How many more f'ing last-second fade away 25ft 3's is he going to make this year? He does a good job of getting everyone involved early on, and scores a disproportionate number of his points in the waning moments of the game. He'll get his win or lose.

Jones-he can disappear for long periods of time, but he's a beast. If he has a good game, A&M wins. If OSU ends up playing A&M, I really want to see how he handles Oden.

Kavaliauskas- 6.10 center with a decent 3 point shot. He looks like he's moving slower than a drunk sloth, but he always seems to be around the ball on defense. Pretty good post game, moves well without the ball (Law seems to find him right under the basket for an easy 2 several times a game). I guess you could say he always seems to be in the right place on the floor.

Carter- tall guard who shoots at a ridiculous clip behind the arc. He can get hot in a hurry and cool off in a hurry. He's a catch-and-shoot guy, and doesn't do much to create his own shot, although I have seen it. Decent defender.

Kirk- serviceable guard. Doesn't do much on offense, but he's a damn good defender.

----Bench----
Sloan- He'll play the point the few times Law goes out, where he does pretty well for himself. When he's in with Law he'll play a wing. Very smooth and fast, and a very good passer for a freshman.

Pompey- Cannon fodder. I think he leads the league in fouls per minute. He is painfully bad most of the time. They will never look his way on offense. Can hold his own on D.

I think OSU would handle them if they meet up, but it would be an ugly game. Something to the tune of 55-48. I'm kind of surprised to see so many "experts" picking them in the South bracket. I think it's one of those instances where, in a collective effort to be different (i.e. not picking OSU), they're all the same.

But I think A&M beats Memphis if/when they meet up. And that's a big if because, as noted, they have to play Louisville in what is essentially a road game.

Its funny you mention the refs. In another thread (i believe the midwestern bracket) we said the same thing about the physical nature of wisconsin. I said, and others agreed, that wiscy plays a B10 football style and without B10 refs they will be in trouble. Having played them 3 times, and MSU twice (also very physical) I like our chances in a physical game. We have also played a wide open full throttle game against UNC. I think we can play both styles, but I think we are at our best when the refs are doing their job. The main worry I have, thanks to a couple posters in this thread, is that we will have to play them in SA.

Agree 100%. We can play thugball with anyone and if someone plays more physical basketball than Wisky or MSU I want to see it.

Question is can A&M play a straight up, skill on skill game in the 70's if the refs call it tight?

On L'ville:

I coached in the NYC Catholic League for a couple of years and had a chance to see Edgar Sosa play first hand more than a few times. He played for Brother Rice in Manhattan which, if you know your NYC basketball, has had its share of stars. The Rice system was so good (Curtis Kelly/UConn; Kash Pratt/Seton Hall; Russel Robinson/Kansas; etc.) that he (and Kash) were forced to play freshman ball.

My take with regards to tOSU is this: Edgar might be a small step slower than Conley (who isn't?), but he is a flat-out scorer who can get it done when called upon. He is completely solid fundamentally and is very mature for a freshman. With regards to matchups, Jamar or Conley could hang with him in a man, but if tOSU loses Edgar in the zone, he's liable to put up some numbers with a range that extends a few feet beyond the 3-point line.

I love that he's playing for Pitino, which is a system that fits him perfectly, and I expect him to eventually put up big numbers over his career.

For now, I think tOSU can handle him if they pay attention, but he can't be allowed to shoot from distance without a hand in his face (a la Lee Humphrey).

Someone needs to answer me this question, cause I'm getting a little offended. Why is Albany a trendy pick to beat UVA among the experts who think they know something? I can certainly see if nobody thinks we'll beat Tennessee. But Albany?

I see the following reasons get thrown around a lot:

- Albany's got Jamar Wilson, who is outstanding
- Albany led Connecticut by 12 last year
- Virginia's got no big men inside
- Virginia's erratic - lost some bad games

Granted, we're erratic and inconsistent. But take a look at the other ones.

Yeah, Albany's got a great guard. We've got two. What, is Wilson going to cancel out both Singletary and Reynolds all at once?
Yeah, Albany led UConn by 12 last year. That only means they choked it away in the span of 11 minutes. In case anyone hasn't noticed, UVA is never out of a game - take a look at what happened against Clemson, Arizona, Duke, Georgia Tech.....big comeback wins, all.
Yeah, we've got no big force inside. But has anyone taken a look at the stiffs Albany runs out there? I expect our bigs to control the paint, given that they're bigger than Albany's - and put up better numbers in the ACC than Albany's did in America East.

People are getting carried away with UVA's flaws.

I can understand you guys not being worried about possibly playing Tennessee since you already beat them by 2 at home this season. But, then it makes little sense to see so many concerned about playing Memphis who lost by 18 to the Vols this season.

It seems Ohio State should be a large favorite if they have to play the Tigers.

I'm guessing part of it has to do with their excellent showing against UConn last year as a 16 seed.

Plus UVA didn't light things up down the stretch.
