You take into consideration. Most NFL Kickers get the ball to the 5 yard line. Some further, some less. On the return most teams get to the 25 yard line.

Now put the kickoff 15 yards back. The team gets the ball at the 20 yard line and returns it 20 yards to the 40 yard line.

It does make a huge difference.
I'm just going to keep saying it doesn't make a difference.

Agree to disagree.

I can understand celebrating but some of the players have gone TOO far. Team celebrations are one thing, but a MOSS pretending to moon the crowd, TO on Dallas's star how many times? If you didn't watch football you'd think it was their first touchdown or a rare occurrence. These guys are role models and like it or not kids will imitate them. I think they need to be more mature in their celebrations. Spiking the ball is fine, getting in the face of an opponent and rubbing it in isn't good sportsmanship IMO.

I did find Chad's "NFL, please don't fine me again" sign to be clever though, but didn't find it disrespectful to the opposing team

If you think that moving the opposing team's starting field position from the 20 or 25 yard line to the 35 or 40 yard line won't make a difference you are crazy. If nothing else even if you get the team to go three and out you will be pinned near your own goal line on the next series. Field position 101. Ask Tressel how he'd feel about kicking off from 15 yards further back. I think he'd tell you it makes a huge difference.

To strong defensive teams like Dallas, Carolina, and Cincinatti, no, I don't think kicking off from the 15 once or twice every few games, if that, is going to somehow put a damper on their season. Call me crazy if you like.

Like I said, it's not like they'll be doing anything ridiculous with the game on the line.

When did Cinci join the ranks of strong defensive teams (or was I asleep and its now 2008 and the Lewis plan is in full bloom)?

they had a ton of tip drill INTs. The talking heads bashed Cinci's D without ceasing when the playoffs came around.

(sorry if this is a repost, having connectivity issues)

I only saw two or three of their games during the season, and I only watched 4 or 5 minutes of their playoff game. I just saw that they forced 40+ turnovers and assumed they were pretty good defensively.

CJ can talk all he wants about not caring about the new rules, but I'm sure Marvin does. This was Marvin's reaction after CJ's stupidity cost the Bengals 15 yards in a game versus Seattle a few years ago.

To say 15 yards "doesn't make a difference" is ridiculous, unless it is a 41-6 game. You kick from the 15, the ball gets to the 20, maybe 25, the return comes out to the 40 or 45. Two mid-range completions and a team is already in scoring position for a FG. And to defensive teams without a whole lot of offense like the Bears, you can't possibly say that doesn't matter with a straight face. If the Bears gave up 2 extra FGs a game last year, they'd probably have been 8-8 or worse.

As for the celebrations, who cares. If they really wanted to stop it, they would tell the defensive team they WOULDN'T fine or suspend them if they whupped on some jackass who started burping a football...but that will never happen either.
