27 injured in roller coaster incident

MASON, Ohio, July 10 (UPI) -- An incident aboard a roller coaster at Kings Island amusement park in Mason, Ohio, has caused at least 27 people to seek hospital treatment for injuries.
Passengers on the ride reported a sharp jolt Sunday while riding Son of the Beast, billed by the park as the world's fastest and tallest wooden rollercoaster, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Monday.
"Everyone was screaming before (the jolt)," Weldon Shaffer, who was on the ride at the time of the incident, told the newpsaper. "Then it was complete silence the rest of the ride."
"It didn't stop. It felt like we hit something or jumped the track," Shaffer said.
Joe Kelley, a spokesman for Bethesda North Hospital in Montgomery, where 11 passengers were treated, said the injuries were "mostly bumps and bruises." Twenty of the patients being treated at local hospitals where released before 10 p.m. Sunday.
The ride had been inspected before opening Sunday, Kings Island spokeswoman Maureen Kaiser told the Enquirer. She said state investigators were expected to investigate the incident Monday.

From what I've heard (and I've heard a lot since I work at Kings Island) is that a support beam snapped and the treack sagged right before the loop. So basically, the car went from 60 to 0 in .1 seconds. Ceder Fair, who bought the paramount parks, is going to tear down the ride.

I rode the Son of the Beast last year in May ONCE. I don't have any neck or back problems but after that ride I had a headache the rest of the day and my knee was bruised. It's much too rough and I'll never ride it again.

Before that we rode the Beast about 5 times in a row with no problems whatsoever. It's a wooden roller coaster but doesn't brutalize you.

Why would they tear down the ride? Thats stupid...just because of one incident? It is the only wood-looping rollercoster in the world, that is what is keeping Kings Island alive basically.
Cedar Fair does a good job of running Cedar Point. They won't take any additional risks with this ride. They'll likely replace with it a better ride in a few years. They typically do a good job with their rides. Cedar Point has the most rollercoasters of any amusement park, so I'm sure they'll treat Kings Island visiters to fun rides.

Son of the Beast is an awful ride anyway. Its uncomfortable, takes four hours to get on, and never works.

I've been to PKI probably ten times since SotB was built, and the thing has probably only been available to ride once or twice.

Unless the part can't be fixed there is no way they tear it down. Probally shut it down for the rest of the year and as they figure out what needs to be done to fix it, and any other tweeks to it. Just because you work there doesn't mean you have any type of inside knowledge, My brother and I both worked there and at that thime there were idiots their who still thought that the reason nothing was built on the land behind the park was because some lions escaped and were still out there from the old animal monorail they had.

Everybody knows that isn't true.

Jungle Jim bought the Lion the same time he bought the Monorail and all the old Hanna-Barbara Land bits.

I believe you can still pick up a couple of pounds of it in his exotic meats case.

I didn't say I knew they were going to tear it down, just saying that I've heard a lot about them doing it.

In response to Dryden, the only time I've ever had to wait more than and hour was the first year it was open.

And I'm telling you a bunch of idiots work there so don't beleive everything you hear.
Lol...a couple at my ride are idiots. There's one kid who's parents both graduated from OSU, but he's a scUM fan. I had fun messing with him, especially when a member of TBDBITL was sent over to our ride to help out.

I work the Wild Thornberries River Adventure by the way, so if you're ever at KI then go there and ask for Greg.

Lol my lady friend wants to ride that when we are going. We're going the 31st and she'll probably drag me there so I'll say hey. But as far as son of beast goes, it was my 3rd favorite behind The Beast and Vortex. It is pretty rough but it always seemed to change in intensity. I hope they just fix it and I've heard that the company that built Son of Beast have/will be sued twice because of the way it was built.

I have ridden Son of Beast and let me tell you, it really kicked my ass. Once I finally got on the ride, that is; I'm 6'4", 230 lbs.; not exactly the size they build coasters for. I had to wedge my legs into the car kind of sideways, as there wasn't enough room to sit facing straight ahead.

Anyway, it was a very uncomfortable ride and it left me with extremely sore knees, an aching back and bruises on my hips. It was AWESOME!!!!! I love wooden roller coasters for that reason. You should feel every turn, every little seam in the track, every little imperfection of the ride. That's what makes wooden coasters so great. Son of Beast, The Beast and Mean Streak at cedar Point are the 3 best coasters in all of Ohio, if you ask me.

I will be extremely disappointed if they tear the ride down. Hopefully it can be fixed and continues kicking the shit out of people for years to come.
