Some Facts About the AP Poll

generaladm;1217146; said:
BB73 already pointed out that LJB's thread only concerns the AP poll, which did not vote OSU #1 in '61. There were other times that different polls ranked OSU #1 in their final edition. In 1970, the National Football Foundation proclaimed OSU the National Champion, but it is not widely accepted outside of Columbus.

Facts, facts, facts. If I wanted facts I'd look 'em up. The 61 Buckeye's will always be national champs in my mind. My freshman year and I get to pick the facts I want to believe.

Wow - the Buckeyes are zero-for-seven when opening as the favorites, although they did get real close a few times:
1958: 6-1-2 record, #8 final AP
1962: 6-3-0, not rated in final AP
1969: 8-1-0, #4 final AP
1970: 9-1-0, #5 final AP
1980: 9-3-0, #15 final AP
1998: 11-1-0, #2 final AP
2006: 12-1-0, #2 final AP
Only ten times has a team won the AP title after being ranked number one in the preseason poll: Oklahoma did it four times (1956, 1974, 1975, 1985); Florida State twice (1993, 1999); and Southern Cal (2004), Michigan State (1952), Alabama (1978), and Tennessee (1951) once each ... although Tennessee's 1951 championship was "pre bowl", and was subsequently tainted when the Vols lost in the Sugar Bowl to Maryland. Just goes to show how much the sports writers know....

When the preseason poll comes out, tOSU will tie TSUN for the most appearances all-time in the AP football poll. Presumably, after the first weekend in September, tOSU will take over the lead in this category.

Most appearances all-time in the AP football poll (Oct 1936-Jan, 2009):

754 - Michigan
753 - Ohio State
707 - Notre Dame
678 - Oklahoma
674 - Southern California
656 - Texas
644 - Nebraska
629 - Alabama
564 - Tennesee
562 - Penn State
501 - Florida

Note - This does not include the 1934 poll, which did include tOSU and not TSUN, nor does it include the unofficial 1947 post-season poll which included TSUN but not tOSU (so those are evened out)

It is quite possible that TSUN will not only lose the position of having the most AP poll appearances, they will very possibly drop out of the top-10 for most all-time #1 rankings in the AP poll by mid-October (to Florida).

All time appearances at #1 in the AP poll (Oct, 1936- Jan, 2009):

97 - Oklahoma
95 - Notre Dame
93 - Ohio State
90 - Southern California
70 - Nebraska
68 - Miami
60 - Florida State
45 - Texas
36 - Alabama
34 - Michigan
29 - Michigan State
28 - Florida
27 - Army
21 - Penn St
21 - Pitt
19 - LSU
18 - Minnesota
18 - Tennessee
15 - Georgia
15 - Washington

Note - same exclusions as the previous post ('34, '47)

Don't make me pull out the "consecutive winning seasons" hammer! :p

I'm not quite sure what you are talking about here, but OSU has had about five losing seasons in its entire history, so go ahead and bring the hammer out, I think we can stand toe to toe with just about anyone as far as losing seasons (or lack thereof) go :tongue2:

edit: checked, these are the years in which Ohio State lost more games than they won

1988: 4-6-1
1959: 3-5-1
1947: 2-6-1
1943: 3-6
1924: 2-3-3
1923: 3-4-1
1922: 3-4
1898: 3-5
1897: 1-7-1
1894: 5-6
1893: 4-5
1890: 1-3

so I lied, there has been more than five, I guess my memory of of the 19th century was a little hazy

Just chatting about the current longest winning season streaks in NCAA Division I football...which is about as relevant as the 1979 season. UF is second behind the Noles, but then, they only have it by virtue of playing those ineligible players in 06 - 07. That's OK.

Anyway, I am just fine with our recent history, and I'm more than OK with giving you the nod on the leather helmet era. (Pre-1990 :p)

Our recent history isn't too shabby either, and we have the leather helmet era, and everything in between.
