Puck control is a huge issue for teams - and usually puck control is dominated by the teams with more skill than those with more speed. In the US/Russia match, the Russians will dominate the puck control, but you still have to score.

The Red Wings built a dynasty in the late 90s and early 2000s by dominating the puck and eventually putting 3 or 4 shots home. However, when it isn't working, it really doesn't work at all and you end up with a ton of shots from the perimeter/boards that are stopped very easily.
This really belongs over here, I was being a smartass to WM over in the other thread...

They (both teams really) seem to throw the puck forward or down the boards often when it seems to me they have opportunities to pass to other teammates. But again, maybe there is simple strategy that I'm missing (clearly, because I'm the only one talking about it).

Well the Russians have faster forwards than the US has d-men, so they want to make it a race to a certain extent. However, the last PP is what Russia will usually do - they completely dominated that, but didn't get one in the net.

the best player on the ice in this game has been Datsyuk and that's entirely without bias. Every time he's on the ice he's dominating the puck, setting up his scorers and generally making whoever the US defender around him look like a fool...
