So I'm buying a laptop for college

Personally I'd stay away from the Gateway (or pretty much anything Gateway these days).

We just got a Presario V2000 in at work (off lease return from one of our customers). It's a nice little machine. You might have to get used to the 14" widescreen but otherwise it doesn't seem to be a bad piece of work at all (actually I think I've convinced my boss to buy it. ). The one thing that stands out is that the newer hp/Compaq machines have the nicest looking LCD displays I've seen on any machine.

I'd try to get a look at the Dell & the Compaq in person and go with which one you are most comfortable with. Dell has kiosks at most malls these days so you should be able to take a look at one there.

Not an expert here by any means, but, from what I've read the AMD processors are kicking Intels ass big time. Just what I've read..

In the desktop market. Mobile CPUs are another matter entirely.

I've been pretty close to a Dell junkie for the last 15 years...
including two laptops...

but I seriously will consider a different brand next time based on my laptop experiences..

best buy is a ripoff for most electronics.

In terms of what brand to get, some people have dells that work, but there are many who would never buy a dell.

I would look into an IBM thinkpad. They do not have as much entertainment sizzle at times, but they are always high-quality products.

What do you want to do on your laptop? Is this for school? Work? What types of things will it be used for (web, papers, graphics, movies, etc)?

True dat. The Turion is a kickass mobile processor though. I dont have anything against Intel laptops by any means. Dont think you really need to stay away from either of them.

I will be honest with you........don't spend $1000 on a laptop. Check out www.slickdeals.net every day and watch for the deals on Dell Inspirons. You can get that same laptop that you posted for $600 or less. I actually saw it for $391 a few weeks ago.
