Mark Snyder Announced as Marshall Head Football Coach
This morning, Marshall University announced that Mark Snyder has been hired to lead the Thundering Herd football program in 2005. Snyder was previously the Defensive Coordinator at Ohio State.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--> BuckeyePlanet was not able to attend today’s press conference, but we were able to catch up with WOWK TV (Charleston, WV) Sport’s Anchor Sean McDowell to get his impressions and some quotes from Coach Snyder.
McDowell said: “Coach Snyder kept making references to being home and to his playing days at Marshall. He hesitated, picked his words carefully, and said he is leaving the second best school in the country for the best.” Sean emphasized that Snyder meant that with the utmost respect for Ohio State.
McDowell also quoted Snyder as saying: “One thing I will take from Ohio State is the 106,000 screaming fans. The 12th man, we have to do that here at Marshall.”
When Sean asked the new coach what this week has been like, he replied: “I have been so engrossed in practice that I haven’t had time to think about this. The real strain has been on my wife and three girls.”
Coach Snyder will be back at Ohio State practices on Friday and he will be in attendance for the annual Spring Game. However; the remaining defensive coaches will be running the defense for the game.
McDowell also said that Snyder referred to Coach Jim Tressel as: “the greatest man that I know.” Sean also said: “that Mark talks about Tressel like we would our fathers. There obviously is a deep friendship between the two.”
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--> Snyder’s contract will pay him $144,200 per year and with incentives could reach as high as $478,000. He was also paid a $50,000 bonus.
