I think it's because Mr. Baker and people like them are more of a fan of themselves and feel this need to feed their ego. The ability to "name drop" could impress people in his mind. I don't find it hard to understand personally, though I despise this "cult of celebrity" that seems so prevelant in our society.

There are lots of people who profess to be "fans" or "boosters" but who are not really true fans. To a true fan, the team and the school are as much a part of their lives as anything else, including their family and their religion. True fans consider the ritual of watching their team as important as any event in their daily lives. True fans often, but not always, have followed their team since childhood and have inherited their fanaticism from their parents. True fans never change the team they root for, and the team they root for is most always the one closest to where they grew up. True BUCKEYE fans learn about character, dignity, and honor from the traditions, institutions, and heros of Ohio State football, and these things shape their lives, and the lives of all Ohioans.

I'll bet this Baker guy is just some schmuck who became a "booster" because he thought it would make him look cool.

Unfortunately, I'm from Springfield. And what I've heard is unsubstantiated rumor from a good number of people. Allegedly Baker failed at local politics around here due to being an insufferable ***. His father held an office (mayor?), and gave Baker the money to buy a position in the local Republican party. Following this, Baker claims he was then "strong-armed" out of the party because "they didn't like him". Gee, patern much? This guy has a history of this crap.

heres some wild and baseless speculation to ponder.

mr. baker was mr. so and so. MoC either had a relationship or knew from others he was friendly to players. once MoC suicided himself with tOSU the mr. so and so well dried up right fast. so MoC has a little chat with his "good friend" ts about the debt his mother was facing. MoC tells ts hey, your mom is in debt and i can't pay it. but this guy will give you the money. you don't have to do anything, he'll just give it to you. you do this for me and ill be indebted to you seeing as how im going to be an NFL star. you know that, you've seen me play. and lets face it, you need a friend who is gonna be a big name, your not even starting at tOSU. ts says to himself, what do i have to loose? zwick is the starter and unless he really sucks or gets hurt... im not going anywhere.

the boosters angle? simple really. you do a favor for ts, and one day you call up ts for a favor of your own when he is a big name star in the NFL. its all about investments. they are all risky, but sometimes they pay off. i wonder how many NFL season tickets a guy like mr. baker can get his hands on through a player like a cris gamble. wonder how much access to an NFL team you can get that way. ill bet it is more than enough to get business to come your way.

this is where the "i own him now" comment came from. its not like he would have ts strangling people in back alleys or throwing games. if ts ever made it big time however, he could be counted on to "remember who helped him along the way" with a favor here and there.

martinss01- good theory, especially considering Baker's background.

By the way: Was Baker the goof with the handlebar mustache on the news?

Unfortunately, it's from experience. I'm originally from Clark County, and I work in Springfield. Whenever people treat me like dirt at work, I smile on the inside knowing that at the end of the day, I get to leave that town and they don't.:wink2:
