From Scout:

Michigan State trustee Joel Ferguson says the University's coaching search is about to come to a head, but if reports are correct, it won't be until after the critical "open" period for contacting recruits begins until MSU has its man.

All attention now surrounds Central Michigan head coach Brian Kelly, who twice denied that he had interviewed for the Michigan State head coaching job. Kelly now appears to have moved to the top of MSU's list.

However, certain published reports have Kelly also atop the vacant Iowa State coaching search. Those reports say he has interviewed at ISU once and is being asked to interview their a second time. However, CMU athletic director Dave Heeke has not given permission to conduct an interview -according to those reports - to Iowa State.

It looks like Michigan State's next coach will be Mark Dantonio. Congrats to Dantonio, though it can be both a great and an awful place to coach. He has done a truly special job at Cincinnati this year. . .

Sources: Cincy's Dantonio to get Michigan State job

Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio moved to the top of the Spartans' list over the weekend, several sources told ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel, and is expected to be named new coach on Monday. The school only said that it has scheduled a special board of trustees meeting for Monday; a 1 p.m. ET news conference related to the football program is scheduled.

Spartans set to spurn Grantham

Monday, November 27, 2006Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is not expected to get the Michigan State head coaching job, the Detroit News and Associated Press reported.
The paper and wire service are reporting MSU will hire Cincinnati Bearcats coach Mark Dantonio, a former Ohio State defensive coordinator, as early as today. MSU has scheduled a special board of trustees meeting for 8 this morning.
Grantham was one of about five or six candidates for the job but did not make it into the final four, according to the News.
Other candidates included LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur and Central Michigan coach Brian Kelly, who's set to take the Iowa State job today.
Grantham declined to comment after the Browns' 30-0 loss to the Bengals. Earlier in the day, WOIO Channel 19 reported Grantham would be offered the job this week, but Crennel said he had no knowledge of that.
Browns safety Brian Russell said the possibility of Grantham leaving has not been a distraction to the defense. "He's a great coach, and we all hope he's back next year," said Russell.
Grantham had one interview with MSU, and the Spartans were considering bringing him back for a second interview until things changed Sunday.

MSU football coaching decision due today

Board votes this morning on president's pick

By Joe Rexrode
Lansing State Journal
EAST LANSING - Michigan State's Board of Trustees will meet at 8 a.m. today to consider President Lou Anna Simon's choice for football coach.
Reports indicated that choice will be Mark Dantonio, head coach at Cincinnati and a former MSU assistant. But sources told the State Journal on Sunday evening that a decision on Dantonio was not final - and that LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini also was being considered.
Miami Dolphins assistant coach Charlie Baggett was the third finalist, sources said, for a job that opened Nov. 1 when John L. Smith was fired.

MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said the board will convene at the Clara Bell Smith Academic Center to hear Simon's recommendation. If approval is granted, a news conference introducing the coach will take place at noon.
An MSU contingent that included athletic director Ron Mason, basketball coach Tom Izzo and senior associate athletic director Mark Hollis flew Saturday night to Baton Rouge, La., to speak with Pelini, then to Cincinnati to speak with Dantonio, sources said.
Baggett, a former MSU player and assistant coach, also was interviewed over the weekend.
Rumors flew over the weekend regarding Central Michigan coach Brian Kelly and Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, both of whom interviewed with MSU.
Reports out of Cleveland on Sunday indicated Grantham's naming was imminent. Sources said neither Kelly nor Grantham were among the final pool of prospects.
Cincinnati athletic director Mike Thomas told the Cincinnati Enquirer on Sunday that Dantonio was a top candidate for the job.
Dantonio, 50, of Zanesville, Ohio, was an MSU assistant coach under Nick Saban from 1995-99, then Bobby Williams in 2000. He was Ohio State's defensive coordinator from 2001-03, directing the defense that led OSU to its 2002 national title.
He is 18-17 in his third season with the Bearcats, who are 7-5 this season with a win over then-No. 7 Rutgers to their credit.
Pelini, 38, is a former Ohio State player who spent nine seasons as an NFL assistant, before stints as a defensive coordinator at Nebraska, Oklahoma and LSU.
If a decision is finalized today, one of the new coach's first priorities will be Keith Nichol of Lowell - a star quarterback who is MSU's top 2007 verbal commitment.
Nichol's family hosted Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops on Sunday. Nichol will graduate early and has enrolled at MSU for spring semester.
"We're gonna stay the course (with MSU) and allow them to do what they're gonna do, but the clock is ticking," Gary Nichol, Keith's father, said Sunday. "We're running out of time and we're forced to be proactive about these things.
"We're very anxious. As soon as a new coach as named, it's our intent to get Keith over there to meet with him face to face."

I'm surprised there's not more chatter on this. I think Dantonio is a good hire for Sparty. They needed someone who had head coaching experience, had a successful track record of recruiting, would bring discipline and toughness Sparty has been missing since the Perles days.
