To be fair, the MOS you choose has a lot to do with it.
This guy was an AC mechanic - decent at it too.
He got banned from standing lunch phone watch after several messages he wrote down. Couldn't spell "that". His shop convinced him to sweep the generator pad of water using a push broom... it's a sloped concrete pad with an oil-water separator at the end.
We later found out his dad ran a painting business in Minnesota and he spent the years of ~8 to 18 painting houses with no respirator. That was the "ah ha" moment.

I see it every day. I especially like that one of mine dropped his insurance right after the 2nd big hail storm because he didn't like the way they treated him on the phone. He then went to a different company and couldn't figure out why they wouldn't pay for the damages.

We had a guy who went on leave and ended up in the hospital forever, bad traffic accident.
Know how he got into a bad traffic accident? Einstein was driving his parents car with the windows down and smoking.
Flips his butt out the window but it goes into the back seat.
Worried that it would burn the upholstery, twinkle toes climbs into the back seat to get the cigarette and throw it out.....while he was doing 60+ mph
Just let go of the wheel and climbed in the back seat

Conference Finishes: 5th, T-7th, T-3d, 5th.
Bowl Record 0-2: No bowls for the 1987 or 1988 seasons. Lost the Hall of Fame Bowl to Auburn after the 1989 season and the Liberty Bowl to Air Force after the 1990 season.
1-3 vs. Michigan.
Back to back home and away losses to Indiana in 1987 by a combined score of 72-17.
The only highlights of the entire era were:
Earls's last game (the 1987 victory over Michigan);
A random home upset of an overrated LSU team in 1988;and
This hit:

Depends upon when you entered the service. Shared a house in Olympia with two other lieutenants. One was a platoon leader for "Special Training Command" company. These were the guys picked up under "McNamara's hundred thousand"
plan. They lowered the qualifying score on the AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) by 15 points. This allowed them to increase each years pool of elgible males by 100K, which in turn allowed them to keep giving draft deferments to college students, which in turn kept the war protests and suburban voter discontent to lower levels. Jim had kids who wet the bed, cried themselves to sleep, couldn't keep left and right straight, some he had to teach how to run (I shit you not), znd the others were bad actors who would taunt and kick the shit out of the bed wetters, crybabies, and the slugs who didn't know how to run. I was the XO for a medium truck company and had some of Jim's graduates. I had to counsel guys who didn't realize that you had to total your expenses so that you would have enough money to pay your car loan. "But, sir, my car loan is only $53 and my pay is $187, my Defense Bond is only $20 and I get paid $187, my World of Diamonds ring for my girlfriend is on $23, but my pay is $187. Insurance is only $10 and I get paid $187. I send Momma $50, but my pay is $187... we'd go through his bills and he'd show me that he could afford each one because he made more money than any one item in the list. I could not convince him that he had to total the bills and then subtract. In the end, I had to take him to finance and then JAG to convince him znd to make changes in order to keep the re-po man away from his car.
Two years later I was now one of four Assistant S/3 (operations officer) for a transportation brigade. We had PHD candidates, PHDs, lawyers, salesmen, grad students, lab techs, driiving trucks. A year earlier I'd been in the field with infantry companies running at 50 to 60 % of their TO&E fill. At the same time Congress had authorized Guard and Reserve units to go to 150% of TO&E strength and we were running closer to 200%.
