You kids stay off my lawn!
At this point I'd say they have reasons for some optimism. The pass protection provided Ruddock plenty of time against a front four that finished 3rd the Pac 12 in sacks last year - not their fault he missed two wide open deep balls - the defense held Utah to a tie. They have three TEs they can throw to and maybe they can get a deep threat to at least open some space underneath to throw to the TEs. I thought Smith ran hard unlike most of the RBs they've thrown out there the last few seasons - he's not Eze E - Gotta be concerned about getting stopped twice on 3rd and a yard and fourth and a yard. I was flat out disappointed by Ruddock. As others have pointed out, he wasn't accurate beyond 15 yards. Further, unlike Shoe Lice and Gardner, he's no threat to tuck the ball and run.
I was also disappointed by Utah. Zip running game despite having a potential All Pac 10 RB. Their LBs and DEs couldn't contain and their back four couldn't keep up with Michigan's wide outs. 13 wins the Shawn Crabel Extending the Other Guy's Drives Award. Their "prevent defense" in the final Michigan drive did what almost all prevent D's do: give up points.
The more I think and write about it the more I think maybe I saw two bad teams on Thursday. The fall off in talent with Gardner (yeah I know, but it wasn't his fault he HAD to play out of position), Funchess, Jake Ryan and Will Hagerup gone from a team whose biggest accomplishment was to get Hoke fired was obvious. There were no freshmen flashes out there - i.e. the recruiting strategic advantage of Harbaugh didn't accomplish dick. Or to put a twist on Mel Brooks' song, Springtime for Urban and Buckeye fans, Winter for Harbaugh and Michigan.
