NFL personnel men concerned by marijuana 'epidemic' in draft - Don Banks - SI.com

According to one veteran club personnel man, 10 or 11 players who carry first-round draft grades on their board this year have been red-flagged for marijuana use in college, an estimate echoed by two clubs' head coaches. Another NFL head coach estimated that "one-third'' of the players on his club's draft board had some sort of history with marijuana use and would thus require an extra level of evaluation as part of the pre-draft scouting process.

"Marijuana use is almost epidemic, with more guys having tested positive for marijuana at some point in their college background than I can ever remember,'' said a longtime team personnel man. "It's almost as if we are having to figure out a new way to evaluate it as part of the character and background report, because it's so prevalent. There're enough instances of it that it's hard to know how to set your board. You can't throw out that many guys. You have to go case-by-case and do your homework on them.''

Much more in the article.

with the rise of legalization in some states, medicinal use, decriminalization, laxed or no longer enforced on some muni/state/fed levels its not all taht surprising. as someone who doesnt smoke, i find it interesting that at what is their "job interview" that someone would have it in their system, regardless of it adversely impacted them. i mean, i wouldnt have alcohol in my blood (even small amounts from a beer with dinner the night before, etc) if presented with the "job" that is there in this situation. id want to piss pristine clean, be well dressed, prepared, etc knowing that any knock could mean thousands, millions in money and reputation, etc

There is a interesting and critical difference between the two examples you give.

Alcohol exits the system quite quickly. Less than a day really.

The breakdown products from THC and cannabinoids linger in the body's tissues for up to four weeks in detectable quantities.

The typical drug screen piss test looks for those breakdown products - rather than the original intoxicants which have, by then, been metabolized.

The real story here should be that people are surprised.

I can count on one hand the amount of college students I know who haven't smoked pot... it's not a big deal. It's so overblown by some people.
here in lies i think one of the things. its 2010. reality is-your parents (probably) smoked a lot more pot than you. i dont necessarily think people are "shocked" its to some extent that the reality of negative impact doesnt register, or doesnt exist. i think the entire legal/illegal argument is different than realizing that your company has certain guidelines, practices, etc and you cant follow them. and this isnt necessarily for you to piss clean (or not do something else) to scoop ice cream over your summer break...

reality is the gms can talk all they want about "reconsidering" but as long as goodell continues to lay down the hammer for off the field stuff and some form of drug testing is in place, it has to be a consideration for the orgs. therefore, it can (potentially will) adversely effect the player.

Most of the pot smokers I know are not capable of thinking that far in advance.

Well, if most of the talent is smoking pot, the NFL will just have to quit testing for it. It's not like they're going to draft a second string OL in the first round because he pisses clean.

I agree tho, in the sense that if you know you're going to be tested, quit fuckin' tokin' for a month before.

It's almost like taking a player off your board because he got drunk a few times... Stupid.
