The athletes deserve the opportunity to "cash in" on their name/popularity; however, what ever "NCAA's mechanism to evaluate the potential deals" is, you know it will be a joke. Like nothing has ever been controversial before in the fairness/adequacy/timeliness of their rules enforcement policy/efforts/results. The school's new recruiting pitches are going to be "come to my school because we have a company that will guarantee you $XXX in endorsements and/or autograph sessions", etc. The "proverbial can" is being opened:

It was already opened. It's CA law at this point.
NCAA just scrambling before they lose the whole thing... it's what happens when you refuse to adapt for 20 years, and get caught flat footed. Somebody or something will force your hand.
It will be a shit show, for sure.
I also see no way this doesn't end up as University and Companies brokering the deals behind closed doors. Deciding which players get sponsored, which don't, which companies get the QBs and star players, etc.
It will also be used as a carrot-and-stick with the Transfer Portal. Universities can't punish a player, but if player signs a sponsorship contract that cancels everything if their name is so much as uttered in the same sentence as "transfer portal" ... it's the same effect.

Yeah, I could easily see the "Adidas bribery" thing that came to light a couple years ago becoming totally legal and above board. I don't think will will necessarily have to be "behind closed doors" either; since the sponsorship deal is totally legal.

In football you won't have the "Power 5" and "Gang of 5" conferences; you have the "universities with big money (corporate) sponsors" and "universities without any big money (corporate) sponsors" conferences. Something similar will be in basketball too. Universities that have the "big money (corporate) benefactors" that are willing to give endorsement/likeness/autograph signing deals the universities' athletes will definitely have an edge up on recruiting, etc. The NCAA champion will actually be "the best team that money can buy" now.

I just mean that the Universities will likely become the middle man and arbiter... probably billed as being a responsible or neutral party.
And that will give them a lot of power to play favorites on both sides. Rewarding and punishing certain advertisers, rewarding and punishing certain players. They will control which advertisers get access to star players, QBs, etc. And they'll control which players get access to the high rollers.

Maybe it doesn't go down like that... and the school/team plays no part, like most endorsement deals. But I have a hard time seeing NCAA keep their hands out of the pot.
