Shoe recommendations?

    • I am calling on the wisdom of the crowd. Its time for new shoes and I am not satisfied with what ive been getting.

    I need shoes that are "nice enough" to wear to work at the hospital.
    Sturdy enough to chop firewood or fetch my dogs from the firewood.
    Flexible enough that I dont embarass myself if my 12 year old challenges me to a pickup game.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Given the knee replacements, pick up basketball did not factor into my calculations when I recently purchased shoes but dissatisfaction with yet another pair of Nike running shoes prompted me to spend an afternoon recently to catch up on shoes.

    1. I ran in Nike Pegasus for three decades. However, I have had to conclude that my Nike quality associations belong in a bygone era. The shoes are rubbish and have had serious tread separation and wear problems for nearly a decade. Quality is still going down.

    2. Given pandemics and the other challenges in your profession, I assume that water-resistant/waterproof would have high value to you.

    3. Running shoes are not a best choice for basketball due to higher probability of ankle rollovers. So, I revisited my search looking for cross-training or basketball.

    My research concluded that Hoka and Salomon are the two best brands now. I went with Salomon shoes because of water resistance and best fit to narrow feet. Salomon shoes have a different lacing system that I thought I would not like, but find that I do.

    Given the selections available to me, which probably differ from the US, I'd look at Salomon Men's Alphacross 5 Trail Running Shoes or X Ultra 4 Wide GORE-TEX.

    I've worn boots pretty much everyday for the last 2 decades

    If snow and mud are involved, I agree with the Merrell recommendations. They have some "waterproof" versions, not that any are truly waterproof.

    If snow and mud are not a worry, I am a huge fan of Saucony Peregrine trail shoes. Super comfy whether it is around the grocery store or a 20-mile hike with lots of elevation changes. They do have gore tex versions on some of their older models. Good in rainy weather but still not waterproof.

    I appreciate all the input. Just ordered a pair of the X ultra 4 Salomons. I have half a dozen pairs of good boots. they tend to last because i find i dont have the patience to change into them every time I SHOULD wear boots. Ive tried Marrells before, they arent bad I think i just tore em up a bit faster than id like. My last was a pair of sketchers with a composite toe and they lasted and did most of the job but they caused some pain in my arches.
