Mark Titus Blasts Ohio State Basketball Fans Following the Buckeyes’ Loss to TCU: “We Have the Worst Fans in the World”

Mark Titus thinks Ohio State has the worst fans in college basketball.

In the latest episode of Mostly Hoops, the former Ohio State walk-on and current Barstool Sports personality ripped Buckeye Nation for its reaction to the team’s 66-64 loss to TCU.

“We have the worst fans in the world, Ohio State. Ohio State basketball fans are the worst fans in the world,” Titus said. “They’re the worst. They’re literally the worst. They watch football all year; they don’t even pay attention to the basketball program. They parachute in around late January, early February. They look up the rankings, and if we’re not ranked in the top 10, they’re just like, ‘Everything sucks, fire everybody. This is terrible.’ They have no idea what they’re talking about.

They don’t even know the names of the goddamn players. And they bitch like they want us to be a top 10 program, which I do too, but like, the reason the top 10 programs are the top 10 programs is because they carry themselves like top 10 programs, 365 days a year. Fans are invested in the program and people are coming to the games, and the people are studying the recruits and, like, fucking — they pour their passion into this. They don’t just pop in and say, ‘Oh, we’re in the tournament? OK, I’ll watch that. I’ll sit down and watch this game.’ And then we lose the game. And you’re like, ‘Fire the coach.’ It’s absurd.”

Titus took particular issue with fans criticizing Jake Diebler’s coaching in Ohio State’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2022, pointing to the Buckeyes’ final possession as an example of overblown reactions. Still, Titus made it clear his rant wasn’t meant to fully absolve Diebler, whom he said deserves some — but not all — of the blame.

“This happens all the time and our dumbass fucking fans just come in and they’re just like, ‘I don’t know who that guy — who’s No. 1 for our team? I kind of like this guy. We should give the ball to No. 1.’ Where have you been all season? What is this? I can’t stand it, dude, it drives me crazy,” Titus said. “I’m actually getting pissed off about it, and that’s not even a rant to defend Jake. It’s a rant to — if you care about the program, care about the program tomorrow. Now the season’s over, right? Guess what North Carolina is gonna do (after losing to VCU). Tomorrow, North Carolina is all hands on deck. Figure this shit out. They’re like, we have to figure this out.

“Ohio State fans are gonna be like, ‘What’s football recruiting look like? Who we got coming up — anybody look at the football schedule?’ They just move on to the next thing, and then they wait for basketball season to roll back around and then demand that we’re one of the best programs in the country. It doesn’t work that way.”

Titus closed by calling on both fans and the athletic department to invest in the program year-round.

“You have to invest. You have to invest money,” Titus said. “We don’t have any fucking money in the basketball program. We don’t have any fan support in the basketball program. It’s absurd, but you still have the expectation we should be Duke or Kansas or whatever. It pisses me off.”

I mean....OK, but what do you want the fans to do tomorrow (today)? Mope and whine and cry? North Carolina can, because they don't give a shit about football. Basketball is all they have.

We’re moping and whining and crying (at least some but we get called out). I definitely want more out of our basketball program - from the top down.

The SEC seems to put out plenty of good teams while keeping football “king”. It’s a little circular- the department needs to invest in the product and the fans need to show up. I think Ohio is a good basketball state with fans that love the sport so I’d put it on the big wigs with money to take the risk and invest.

But I get his overall point. 17 die hard basketball fans and a couple pretend ones that show up with pitchforks to the AD isn’t going to move the needle.

Agreed. The truth is we have some fans who are ignorant & outspoken, and those exist in every fanbase but ours is bigger than almost all of them so it gets magnified. OSU fans are fickle, they will show up if the program is a winner, if not, then good luck. Yeah, our basketball program needs to achieve more, but it's unrealistic to ignore the obvious financial handicap & priority of feeding the beast (football).

I don't think a lot of the heat that Diebler gets is fair because, while no one is perfect, I agree with Titus in that I don't think Jake's gotten top-tier support from the OSU administration with talent evaluation/roster management help & with NIL, & those to me are the biggest problems with the program.

I don't like people like T-Bone and Tyvis comparing OSU men's basketball to OSU women's basketball or women's hockey or any other non-revenue sport, because it's way off base when you realize there are men's basketball teams spending $20 MILLION on their rosters and OSU is clearly trying to compete with programs that are spending far more on talent. OSU was well behind the top spenders even in the B1G, and when that becomes a pattern, that obviously is going to impact your competitiveness within the conference long-term. When your team is funded by millions of dollars less than many of your competitors, that's a huge problem that has a real effect on team-building. I doubt any of the non-revenue sports have to compete with many (if not most) top programs that are spending a lot more on talent, but that's the task they are making Diebler take on.

You're like halfway to keeping up with the Joneses financially, but you expect your house to look just as nice - something's got to give & people need to recognize the coach is not going to be able to plug all the holes in the roof with his fingers. I don't care what level of competitiveness non-revenue sports have & what kind of standards they make you believe exist, they really have no bearing on OSU men's basketball. The problem is many OSU fans are under the impression that Diebler's getting competitive support when he's not & place the blame where it's easiest.

So the guy who has leveraged averaging 4.3 seconds per game over his basketball career at tOSU (No, I did not do any statistical analysis. I made that number up.) into a career has decided tOSU fans (who helped make his career) are the worst in the world? If it were not for tOSU fans supporting him, especially early, does he really think he would currently have the career he has? How much experience does he have with the other fan bases?

And no, I am not defending the idiots in tOSU fanbase. But as has been mentioned earlier in this thread and many other threads tOSU has the largest fanbase in the world. Which means we may well have the largest number of idiots. But the largest percentage? Not necessarily. But we appear to have the largest number of former walk-ons who never saw the court except in meaningless time and who have turned that meaningless time into a career and are now taking pot shots at the fans who supported them. (Talk about a run on sentence.)

Now get off my lawn!

I think Kansas and Duke are the right programs to look at.

You look at their expectations and commitment to football and that is what we should probably shoot for in basketball.

The fundamental truth is, if you build it they will come. Put the resources into it, build a winning program and you will get fan support (good and bad) BUT 1) It isn't ever going to mean as much as football to the fanbase. It just isn't. and 2) ROI. It's a business like anything else-you invest in it proportionate to what you expect to get back out of it so see my point above about Kansas/Duke football. How much are you really going to get back out of OSU basketball? I mean financially.

The arena holds a fair amount so you could shoot for that being full. The B1G TV money is already flowing through, not sure how you raise the water level there any. It gets back to needing some billionaire who needs to solve self identity problems and tax write offs in the same vehicle.

I don't know for sure but from 10,000 ft I don't see a big lift to the revenue proportionate to a big capital investment.

I think it's stuck where it is and you may get occasional variance if you catch lightning in a bottle on a certain player or coach.
