Jim Naveau: Ex-Buckeye's book has hits and misses
April 07, 2012
Jim Naveau
The 1970s had Jim Bouton?s ?Ball Four,? the first no-holds-barred tell-all book about what goes on inside a major league baseball locker room.
The 1980s had self-deprecating baseball humorist Bob Uecker?s ?Catcher In The Wry,? which bragged on its cover that it included ?16 pages of tasteless photographs.?
If Mark Titus? ?Don?t Put Me In Coach? is all we?ve got in 2012 in the locker room confidential/sports humor category, maybe it?s time to repair the flux capacitor and take the DeLorean back to the 1970s.
Titus, in case you?re not familiar with him, is the Ohio State men?s basketball walk-on from 2006-2010 who became famous for hardly playing at all through his wildly popular blog ?Club Trillion.?
The Club Trillion name comes from the fact that on an expanded official NCAA basketball statistics sheet a player who gets into a game for one minute and has zeroes in every other statistic has a line that looks like a trillion.
The blog amused me almost every time I checked in on it while Titus was at OSU.

This writer is from Lima, Ohio, and Mark shows one of Lima's own (Butler) in not such a great light, so therefore he must trash the book. Lived in that shithole of a little town for a few years, and they still believe that Greg Simpson got screwed at OSU and is the cause of all his now problems.
Former Ohio State men's basketball player Mark Titus talks new book, Final Four, Urban Meyer

Former OSU men's basketball player and creator of club trillion.com, Mark Titus, smiles during an interview with The Lantern following his April 16 book signing at the South Campus Gateway Barnes and Noble.
Former Ohio State men?s basketball walk-on-turned-celebrity Mark Titus was on campus Monday evening promoting his book, ?Don?t Put Me in, Coach: My Incredible NCAA Journey from the End of the Bench to the End of the Bench? at the Barnes and Noble bookstore at 1596 N. High St. Titus, the creator of
clubtrillion.com signed for about 130 people for more than two hours, burning through five Sharpie pens in the process. After the book signing, Titus, a member of OSU?s 2007 National Runner-up team, sat down with The Lantern to discuss his favorite chapter in ?Don?t Put Me in Coach,? as well as what he?d say to Buckeye football coach Urban Meyer if he had the chance.
The Lantern: Of the 40 chapters in your book, do you have a favorite?
Mark Titus: My favorite one to write, I think, was probably the one where (now-former OSU guard) William Buford gave me permission to use the ?N-word.? As I was writing it, I just enjoyed the minefield, you know what I mean? You?ve gotta tip-toe and you gotta be funny and edgy and I?ve always been politically incorrect, but at the same time, you can?t be too offensive. So I really enjoyed writing that because it was a challenge to think of a funny way to say something without pissing off a ton of people.
TL: Has OSU men?s basketball coach Thad Matta given you any feedback on your book?
MT: I gave him my first author copy. He didn?t actually say it, but he kind of looked at it like, ?You know I?m not going to read this, right?? And it was obvious that he wasn?t really that interested, and he kept trying to over-sell it so much, like, ?Wow. Whoa.? I haven?t heard from him since about the book. I don?t think he?s read it. I don?t think he?ll read it until he retires, because I don?t think he wants to know what his players are up to. He?s always been that way, like, ?Don?t tell me. What I don?t know can?t hurt me.?

Podcast: Mark Titus on his book, relationship with Evan Turner, N64 strategy, and ...
By Matt Norlander | Senior College Basketball Blogger
Good pod today. This one flew by, too.
Mark Titus is the most well-known walk-on in the history of college hoops. This became so after he started a blog, Club Trillion, during his playing days, from 2007 to 2010. Since he graduated, Titus put a lot of his time into writing a book. It's titled, Don't Put Me in, Coach, and it chronicles the entirety of his college career and then some.
Titus hops on to chat how the book came to be, his relationship with Mike Conley Jr. and Greg Oden -- but most importantly, Evan Turner. As it turns out, Titus' comments about The Villain have only now started to create some waves, despite the fact Don't Put Me in, Coach has been out for more than a month. Titus is critical of Turner throughout the book, but there's context that needs to be added to what he says.
Today's pod isn't all gossip, though. Titus is a huge fan of "Lost," Bond for N64 and being lazy. You'll find you most likely have a lot in common with the man, who you should follow on Twitter immediately.
Rundown:
From the beginning: Titus is almost two years out of college. The immediate life after undergrad moves so fast.
3:36: Not only did Titus write the book, but he got a hefty advance to do so. When did he know he could definitely do this?
7:00 Titus clarifies and puts into context his Evan Turner criticisms.
12:43: Wait, Mike Conley, Jr. is a golfer?
15:13: The ... how do I say this ... "running" theme with Titus book is addressed here.
18:20: A teammate once asked Titus to take his drug test for him.
25:40: Can't help myself here. Titus and I are both "Lost" fans, so since he brings it up in the book, I have to bring it up on the pod. Feel free to fast-forward to ...
30:44: It's time to talk Bond N64. Mandatory dude talk.
33:30: Titus' experience with the Harlem Globetrotters wraps up his book, and I wanted him to expand on it here. The organization actually comes off pretty terribly, and instead of undoubtedly bringing more good pub to that team, they disastrously botched putting Titus in a tri-colored uni.
Former Ohio State basketball player Mark Titus grapples with young writing career

Former OSU men's basketball player and creator of club trillion.com, Mark Titus, signs copies of his book, ?Don?t Put Me in Coach, during his April 16 book signing at the South Campus Gateway Barnes and Noble.
Former Ohio State men?s basketball player Mark Titus read excerpts from his book, ?Don?t Put Me in Coach,? July 11 as part of Thurber House?s Summer Literary picnic series. A crowd of more than 100 dined on boxed, gourmet dinners and poured glasses of wine while laughing as Titus entertained them with some of his favorite passages from the 257-page publication.
Walking the ornate halls of the Victorian-style building, a non-profit literary center on Jefferson Avenue in Columbus, Titus gazed at pictures of famed authors who have also spoken there through the years.
Titus said it was immediately evident to him that his signed photograph did not belong in the company of those commemorating other accomplished writers? appearances at Thurber House.
?I was like, ?I?m going to be up there with these guys? That?s crazy,?? Titus told The Lantern after his book signing that evening.
The idea that Titus? name doesn?t belong amongst other respected writers, particularly sports writers, may only be taken as factual by Titus himself.
His first writings came via his personal blog clubtrillion.com where, as the header on the site suggests, he shared his life views from the end of the OSU?s men?s basketball bench. Titus was a member of the team from 2006-2010 and accumulated nine career points in his time under Buckeyes coach Thad Matta.
The blog, at times satirical, captured the players? approach to his role in the OSU squad, as did ?Don?t Put Me in Coach,? a collection of personal, and mostly hilarious, recollections from the player-turned-author?s time as a student-athlete.
Titus has also gained fame as a freelance writer for Grantland.com. One of his contributions ? a column entitled ?The Era of the Super-Conference? ? was even selected for the second edition of Grantland?s hardbound quarterly edition.
Editors from Grantland.com did not respond to The Lantern?s request for comment regarding Titus, but it seems even attracting the attention of the higher-ups of that ESPN offshoot website isn?t enough to make Titus feel accepted as an author.
Titus said he doesn?t understand what attracts Grantland editors, including Bill Simmons, author of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling book, ?The Book of Basketball,? to want him in the mix.
?I don?t know, I think it?s that I have the personality,? he said. ?I like to try to look at stuff from a different angle. My goal when I write is to be funny first and then, maybe second, is to provide analysis. So, I don?t know, maybe it?s that. I still don?t get it.?

There was one story and only one story that got cut from the first draft of the book. I won't name names, but it involved a black teammate who wanted me to pee for him because he had already failed a drug test earlier in the year (because of weed) and another failed test meant he'd have to miss some games. I wasn't comfortable getting involved in that but I also didn't want to look like a bitch, so I told him the first thing that came to mind: "I can't pee for you. I'm white and you're black. They'll be able to tell right away that it wasn't from you." He said, "Damn, good point" and left me alone after that.
