Basketball: Show might go on for Titus
Former OSU player receives invitation from Globetrotters

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

After notifying his parents and speaking with a reporter, Mark Titus had someone else with whom he wanted to share the news.

"I'm going to call Evan soon and let him know I was drafted before him," Titus said.

Two days before Evan Turner will hear his name called during the NBA draft in New York, his longtime antagonist on the Ohio State men's basketball team got a call from the Harlem Globetrotters Tuesday morning.

"I was at the gym. I'd just got done rehabbing my shoulder," said Titus, a former walk-on with the Buckeyes. "I had a voice mail from an unknown number. I listened, and some guy was telling me I'd been drafted."

Titus' first call was to his father.

"Do they know you're white?" Bill Titus asked.

No problem. The Globetrotters are colorblind. They have had two white players on their roster in their 84 seasons, said Brett Meister, vice president of communications - Bob Karstens in 1943 and Seth Franco in 2004.

"The Globetrotters have always looked for good basketball players, good people, and good entertainers," Meister said.

For the past four years, Mark Titus has done a great job becoming the world?s most famous walk-on.

When blogs got hot, he was there with Club Trillion. When lack of playing time didn?t allow him to display his skills, he took to YouTube with one of the most hilarious videos you?ll ever see.

The number of people following him on Twitter? 18,281. That?s roughly double the people following Evan Turner, his Ohio State teammate and likely second overall pick in Thursday night?s NBA Draft.

Globetrotting Hoosier: Brownsburg man drafted by legendary team
By Ryan Palencer, Hendricks County Flyer, Avon, Ind.

June 28--BROWNSBURG -- Mark Titus has had an interesting basketball journey.

"Four years ago, I was coming into Ohio State and had given up basketball," Titus said. "I had no intentions on ever playing again. Now I'm playing for one of the most successful pro basketball teams in history."

Titus was recently picked by the Harlem Globetrotters in their annual draft.

Titus was so surprised, in fact, that he didn't even believe the call notifying him that he had been drafted.

"I'm actually really excited," Titus said. "At first I thought it was a joke when I found out about it. I had a voicemail on my phone and when I listened to it, I thought it was a joke, but they left a number to call back. When I called back and I talked to the guy, I found out that it was real and I was really excited about it."

Titus, a 6-4 guard, was regarded as a "pure shooter" as a member of the Brownsburg High School basketball team. But he admits he thought his days on the court were over once he left high school.

"I started at Brownsburg and was a pretty good player, but I wanted to go to a big school," he said. "I wasn't really good enough to play at a BCS school. I got recruited by mid-major schools, but I always wanted to go to a big school, so I came to Ohio State. I wanted to be a normal student and actually ended up walking on here."

After originally joining the Ohio State team as a manager, Titus worked his way into a walk-on as a Buckeye. Though he rarely got into a game, he said he enjoyed the experience both on and off the floor.

He became well known throughout campus, as he authored his popular "Club Trillion" blog, noting all of his experiences.

Titus recalls going to watch the Globetrotters when he was 7 years old.

"I've been a fan of the Globetrotters for a very long time," he said. "I've always been intrigued by what they do. It's kind of cool to think that they have drafted me now.

"I have an older brother, who is three years older than me. I remember when we were little, and we would play in the driveway or the backyard, we would play a few games of one-on-one, but then at the very end right before we would stop playing basketball, we would announce that we were the Harlem Globetrotters and we would play on the same team. We would throw behind-the-back passes to each other and try to throw alley-oops. We were little and it wasn't really that fancy, but we thought we were the coolest kids in the world because we could do all that stuff."

Though he's not sure what his role will be on the team, Titus said he's willing to do anything.

Now that he's made the draft, he'll attend the Globetrotters' training camp and tryouts at the end of September in New York.

Titus' off-beat path takes a new Globetrotters turn
Buckeyes' student manager-turned-player and blog sensation gets shot to fulfill boyhood dream
By Andrew Astleford

Before his standout Brownsburg High School basketball career, the YouTube videos and Club Trillion blog that transformed his end-of-the-bench antics at Ohio State into a national sensation, Mark Titus dreamed of becoming a Harlem Globetrotter.

Titus and his brother, Ryan, played boyhood pick-up games in their backyard. When one-on-one contests bored them, they announced they were Globetrotters. Against no competition, they tossed trick passes. They flipped alley-oops. They smashed basketballs off backboards and pretended they were stars.

Titus, 7 at the time, was prepping for a profession. On June 22, the Globetrotters drafted him as one of six players in their 2010 class. He will try to secure a roster spot this fall and maybe make a little history along the way. The Globetrotters have had only two white players under contract since their inception in 1926: Bob Karstens (1942-43) and Seth Franco (2003-04).

"I remember, growing up, watching the Harlem Globetrotters, and I thought it was really cool," said Titus, a 6-4 guard who graduated from Ohio State on June 13. "It seemed like a lot of fun. When I was little, I remember thinking it looked like more fun to play for the Globetrotters than it would to play in the NBA. It's kind of interesting how it turned out."

REVIEW: EVAN TURNER

I asked Mark Titus (Evan Turner's former OSU teammate, creator of the Club Trillion blog and a recent Globetrotters pick) to review Turner's draft night performance. Here's what he wrote:

Heading into last night's NBA draft, I was certain of two things about my former teammate: He has by far the best nickname of anyone in the draft (The Villain), and he is an avid fan of Lady Gaga. Knowing this made me uncontrollably excited about what he might wear, because a great nickname always comes with a little bit of swagger and any serious Lady Gaga fan just might be crazy enough to try to dress like her. Then I realized there was virtually no chance of Evan going over the top with his wardrobe, because pretty much nothing about Evan could be described as "flashy." On the court, the bread and butter of his game is his midrange jump shot (unexciting yet effective). Off the court, he's a well-mannered and respectful kid who can be found reading books, watching film, or working on his game in the gym on weekend nights. This substance-over-style attitude was reflected last night in demeanor and dress.

Evan only got flashy with his watch and custom Ohio State cufflinks, but virtually nobody saw them because his long sleeves and suit jacket covered them. He pushed the Ohio State theme by wearing a gray suit with a scarlet red tie, but to all non-Ohio State fans, it looked boring compared to Wesley Johnson's suit. While Al-Farouq Aminu regrettably wore glasses that made him look like Squints from "The Sandlot," Evan wore the same prescription glasses that he's worn for years. These glasses paired with this year's atrocious draft hats made Evan quite possibly the first top 2 pick in NBA history to also look like the draft's biggest dweeb. Sure it wasn't the Gaga-esque look I was hoping for, but Evan will probably tell you that he dressed that way because he didn't want to try to make the draft about him. One thing's for sure: He's come a long way from the hot-headed college freshman who, when told to wear dress clothes to team events, would show up in Jordans and blue jeans.

Finally back!

I stopped writing simply because the blog stopped being fun for me. I was a victim of my own success and couldn?t handle the burden it all became. I was overwhelmed with pressure and I wanted to take the easy way out so I could just hang out with my friends.

Basically, I was LeBron.
