COLUMBUS -- Lenzelle Smith Jr. is no "Cool Hand" Luke.
For one thing, Smith has his mind right. For another, he's had a very hot hand of late.
"When Lenzelle is dialed in, he really, really sees things in terms of how do I help the other four guys on the floor," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "He can go in his own little world and say, 'I've got to get myself.'
"When he's thinking that broader vision, he plays great basketball."
Considered the fifth starter in terms of production and stature, the 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Illinois showed his capabilities last week, playing himself onto the East Region's All-Tournament team.
Just before Ohio State left for Boston, Matta made sure he talked to Smith, reminding him to keep his mind right.
"I guess I have a tendency to play well when my mind is right," Smith said to laughs from his teammates earlier this week. "I come out and tend to do the things that we require to win. I know my role on this team, and I try to play that as best as I can."

Lenzelle Smith Jr. comfortable with his role
March, 30, 2012
By Myron Medcalf
New Orleans -- During a defensive drill in Ohio State?s Friday afternoon practice at the Superdome, Lenzelle Smith Jr. screamed to let his teammates know his position.
?I got it! I?m here!? he shouted as his squad prepared for Saturday?s Final Four matchup against Kansas.
He didn?t have to yell for the college basketball world to acknowledge him last weekend, when he scored 17 points against Cincinnati in the Sweet 16 and 18 points against Syracuse in the Elite Eight. He connected on 11 of his 18 shots (6-for-10 from beyond the arc) and recorded nine rebounds during that stretch, too.
They were breakout performances for the sophomore.
For a while, however, Smith didn?t know exactly where he stood with the Buckeyes. That?s the challenge that comes with playing next to four other starters who combine to average 56.9 points per game.
?It?s very difficult. It even gets to the point where it?s frustrating at times,? Smith said. ?Sacrificing whatever your personal intentions [are] for the betterment of the team is great. That?s the type of teammates you need. That?s what I wanted to do, type of guy I am. I?ve always been the type of player who?s willing to do whatever it takes to win.?

Lenzelle Smith Excited About Ohio State?s Offseason Progress
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? There seemed to be a peace about Lenzelle Smith, Jr. as he walked into the interview room. He sat down at the table with a smile on his face and was as polite, helpful and well-spoken as just about any player I have spoken to from the Ohio State men?s basketball team.

That?s saying a lot, because there have been some pretty good ones over the years, but the junior out of Zion, Ill. is both excited and focused on the opportunity to become a bigger part of Ohio State?s offensive attack this fall.
?I?ve been working hard on my offense,? he told me during our interview last month.
?Working on my ball-handling, getting to the basket. I think I got that to a pretty good point, but now it?s about being a good dead-eye shooter who can knock down shots at a high clip. I showed against Syracuse and Cincinnati I can put the ball in the basket. People are going to look for that, so when my time comes in games I have to be ready.?

http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2013/03/doug_lesmerises_four_things_i_1.html#incart_river2. Lenzelle Smith Jr. was hugging the Big Ten Tournament trophy in the locker room after the game like he would never let it go. So the tournament gets quickly washed away by Selection Sunday, but it does mean something to the players and coaches.
