SG Jon Diebler (2nd-Most Big Ten career 3-Pointers, Butler Recruiting Director)

Diebler, traveled to Portland on Monday where he?ll practice and play with the Portland Trailblazers.

Diebler, who connected on 374 career 3-pointers during his four years with the Buckeyes, began his professional career with Panionios (Greece). While his game developed during his time in Greece, Diebler said he still has some work to do in order to impress the Trailblazers, which spent a second-round pick on him during the 2011 NBA Draft.

?My time in Greece was great. I improved a lot as a player,? Diebler said. ?There?s definitely things I need to work on. I need to prove that I can hold my own on defense and just make shots. I think I have a pretty good chance.?

Still Waiting His Turn
July 26, 2012

Jon Diebler was the best basketball player on his team throughout his youth and went on to even more stardom while playing for his father, Keith Diebler, at Upper Sandusky (Ohio) High School.

He was such a centerpiece there that he became the all-time leading scorer in Ohio high school history and was named Mr. Basketball in 2007 following his senior year.

It?s safe to say that up to that point no one had ever considered swapping the sweet-shooting Diebler out to another team. And even when his four-year career at Ohio State got off to a slow start it was clear to see that the 6-6 off-guard had a key role and the talent to be a difference-maker for the Buckeyes.

After becoming the all-time three-point shooter in Big Ten history, Diebler was a second-round pick of the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2011 draft. However, he played in Greece at the request of the team to better prepare for the transition to the NBA.

It all was supposed to pay off this season, and Diebler left Columbus for the West Coast a few weeks ago anxious to earn a spot on the Blazers? roster.

But while playing for Portland?s entry in the Las Vegas Summer League, Diebler found out that he was property of another NBA team.

In a multi-pronged deal that sent shooting guard Courtney Lee from the Houston Rockets to the Boston Celtics, guard/forward Sasha Pavlovic from the Celtics to the Blazers, and three barely-used players ? forward JaJuan Johnson, guard E?Twaun Moore and forward/center Sean Williams ? from the Celtics to the Rockets, Houston also was able to acquire the rights to Diebler.

If Diebler is able to land on the Rockets? roster, he will join the likes of newly signed point guard Jeremy Lin and shooting guard Kevin Martin, a native of Zanesville, Ohio.

But right now Diebler is just trying to absorb the change.

?It was crazy,? he told SportsRappUp.com earlier this week while readying to hit the links in a pro-am event at Muirfield Village Golf Club. ?It happened so quick. I got the call a couple hours before our game that there was a possibility I might be getting traded. And then when I got the official call, GM Neil Oshey told me, ?Your rights have been traded to Houston; we appreciate everything you?ve done for us,? and that was that.?

Diebler will play in Turkey

Former Ohio State guard Jon Diebler will play a second season in Europe after signing today with Pinar Karsiyaka, a team in the Aegean Sea town of Izmir, Turkey. His agent, Lance Young, confirmed the signing.

Diebler, taken by the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft, played last season in Greece. He played with the Blazers' entry in the Las Vegas Summer League this month, but last week his negotiating rights were traded to the Houston Rockets as part of a three-team deal also involving Boston.

Young said the Rockets encouraged Diebler to play overseas again this season because they are well-stocked with players on the wing.

"(Rockets general manager) Daryl Morey told me they can see him on their roster in the future but this year is not the best time," Young said.

"Jon said he's going to go back to Europe this year and become a better player, and he'll go to training camp with the Rockets next year and make their roster. If he doesn't, he'll become a free agent."

Diebler spoke at the event roughly 17 hours before he was due to board a plane headed for Turkey, where he will join Pinar Karsiyaka of the Turkish Premier League.

"When I got traded to the Rockets, it was kind of the same situation (as last year with Portland) where there wasn't much roster room," he said. "They recommended I go overseas, so I'm going to Turkey (today) and I'm sneaking this in in the meantime."

Diebler will be one of three Americans on his team, joining Bobby Dixon, who played his college basketball at Troy, and Will Thomas, who was a member of George Mason's 2006 Final Four team.

"The league is going to be very good," Diebler said. "There's a lot of very good American players going over there. It's going to be a lot of fun."

Diebler said another former Buckeye, Ron Lewis, also will be playing in the league.

Having a year on international experience under his built from playing last season in Greece, Diebler feels that will only help as he gets set for the upcoming season.

"It's very good basketball, but sometimes the rules are a little different and how the game is played is different," he said. "It was something that took a little bit to get used to for me last year, but I got a little bit of experience now, so I'm excited to go over there."

Despite being half-a-world away, Diebler still checks in on how his former teams are doing. He mentioned keeping in touch with people in Upper Sandusky and being able to watch his former teammates in Columbus as they made their run to the Final Four.

"I watched the games online," he said. "I watched them on the Internet and made sure I got to see them. It was like four in the morning in Greece, but I still watched them. I was real excited for them this year."

After his playing days are over, Diebler would like to follow the family path and enter the coaching ranks. His dad Keith led Upper Sandusky to a state title and also has coached at Fostoria. His brother Jake is an assistant at Valparaiso.

However, he said he's not yet ready to turn in his uniform for a clipboard.

"Hopefully I'm going to play as long as I can," he said.

Jon Diebler; The most underrated talent of Turkish Basketball League

jon_diebler_ksk.jpg

Jon Diebler is an american basketball player who currently plays for Pinar Karsiyaka.

He is a class of 88' who played four seasons for Ohio State University. He's a holder of Ohio high school career scoring and big ten career three point field goal record of Ohio State University.

Thanks to his father who was the head coach of his high school team, he scored over 3000 points during his high school career. In his senior year, he averaged 41.2 points, 12.3 rebounds and 6 assists per game. After high school years, he started to play for Ohio State University. He finished 2009-2010 season by averaging 37.2 minutes per game. Starting from his sophomore year, he was a regular starter in total 115 games during his time for Ohio State University.

In 2011 Nba draft, he was drafted as 51th overall draft pick by Portland Trail Blazers, but he wasn't offered a contract. Later in august, he decided to head to Europe possibly due to the lockout and he signed a one year contract with Panionios of Greece. His draft rights were traded to Houston Rockets in July, 2012.

After a successful year in Greece, Pinar Karsiyaka Basketball Management which is probably the best organization of Turkish Basketball to scout talents discovered his potential and he was signed by Pinar Karsiyaka on July, 2012.

During the first half of the 2012-2013 Basketball season, Jon Diebler averaged 28 minutes, 12.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in the domestic league. More spectacularly, he shot with %46 behind the arc, which makes him an elite shooter. In Fiba Eurochallenge cup, his figures are 24.8 minutes, 10 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. It's pretty safe to say he is one of the most underpaid players, too since his contract currently is only worth 150K$/a year.

Jon Diebler comes from a family where pretty much everyone is involved in playing basketball. He's an outstanding shooter and a great player with good court vision and high basketball IQ. He's athletic enough to create open spaces for his shooting skills, but he needs to add some extra pounds to get stronger. As a weakness, he rarely penetrates inside the area to draw fouls in spite of he is a good free throw shooter.

Diebler is playing at a high level for a top 15 European team in Pinar Karsiyaka. As the article above noted, Pinar has a good reputation for strong scouting & coaching (Much like the Spurs of the NBA, it's a great fit for Jon). This is a very balanced squad with weapons all over the place, starting with point guard Bobby Dixon, Diebs, and forward Alade Aminu (brother of Al-Farouq Aminu of the Hornets).

Pinar Karsiyaka is a contender for the Turkish League Championship (#2 in league standings) & is also one of the favorites in the 2012/2013 EuroChallenge (a separate competition where they play teams from other leagues/countries) Here's some clips of Jon & Pinar in their most recent EuroChallenge contest, a road game in Latvia on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.

Diebler (number #32) scored 17 points and hit the dagger three pointer at the end. :osu:
