SG Eugene Brown (Transfer to Georgia Southern)

Ohio State is inching closer to having a full-strength roster for the first time all season.

Eugene Brown’s absence through the first 10 games hasn’t exactly been glaring, given the Buckeyes’ solid 7-3 record and the fact that the junior has never averaged more than 3.5 points per game in a season with the Buckeyes. But Brown started 10 of Ohio State’s final 12 games a year ago, and throughout the 2021-22 season, Chris Holtmann was confident in his assertion that Brown would play an even bigger role in year three.

He hasn’t gotten the chance thus far as the impact of a preseason concussion has kept Brown off the floor for nearly the first third of the year. But his return to action appears to be imminent as Holtmann issued a positive health update about the upperclassman in Monday’s press conference.

“Gene's making progress,” Holtmann said. “Expect his return shortly, not exactly sure yet, it's going to depend on how practice goes.”

Missing 10-plus games for a concussion may seem like an unusually long time, but Brown also suffered a concussion that held him out of multiple games a year ago. Perhaps the program’s medical staff wanted to be extra cautious given the repeated concussions suffered by Kyle Young over the past two years, but Holtmann said he doesn’t believe that to be the case.

Wasn't aware what his injury exactly was. Needless to say, you shouldn't rush a player back from a concussion before he's 100%.

Gene Brown III ready to get back in game action
After missing the first 11 games of the season, third-year wing Gene Brown III was on the bench in uniform against Maine but only available in an emergency situation as he continued to progress from a concussion that sidelined him during the preseason.

He is likely to make his season debut against the Bulldogs on Thursday, and it wasn’t just the concussion that held him back. He’s making progress and I think he’s getting back,” Holtmann said. “He’s really been healthy. It’s been less about health and more about making sure Gene’s body is ready for what’s coming. When you’ve been out 8-10 weeks you can’t just throw him back in a game because you’re risking another injury. We’re excited to get Gene back.”

Holtmann credited Brown for providing rebounding and “good positional length” at the wing spots but also pointed out that Brown missed much of the summer due to other injuries, robbing him of valuable time for growth.

I don't think he signed up to be a back up 5, which is what he became when Zed went down. He did the best he could with it.

He got his OSU degree and will always be a Buckeye. I hope he finds a good landing spot...as long as it is not in conference.
Exactly what I came in to say. While I don't think of the transfer as a "loss" necessarily, I do think he was put in a tough spot and manned up to a role he was not suited to play to help the team, so nothing but love for Eugene and I hope he crushes it wherever he lands (as long as it is not in the state up north).
