SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

Pat Riley: Daequan Cook staying put

MIAMI - Even after Dorell Wright's injury thinned the perimeter rotation and with youth the new focus, Heat coach Pat Riley said rookie guard Daequan Cook won't be recalled from the NBA Development League.

Wright said Cook would play five games for the Iowa Energy, a schedule that would have him rejoin the Heat after March 11. Cook was loaned to the Heat's D-League affiliate last week.

Cook had a strong debut with Iowa, scoring 26 points Sunday in a 115-108 victory over the Albuquerque Thunderbirds.

Cook, who had barely been getting minutes with the Heat over the past month, played 39 of the 48 minutes and shot 10 of 23 from the field and 4 of 9 on 3-pointers.

"I think from that standpoint," Riley said of the 2007 first-round pick, "over the next four or five games, I'd like to see, in a game, if, in fact, somebody goes to him all the time, what he can do.

"He's been drifting, just a little bit, here. When he comes back, he'll get a good 21, 22 games with us, which will be a lot."

Because of the roster uncertainty, Riley recalled rookie guard Daequan Cook and rookie center Joel Anthony from the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League.

Cook scored 28 points Friday in his D-League finale against the Los Angeles D-Fenders, while Anthony closed that loss in Los Angeles with seven points and four rebounds. The two were then scheduled to board a red-eye flight to Atlanta.

"We've got the kids coming back," Riley said.

Rookie inconsistency of Heat's Daequan Cook not a surprise
By Ira Winderman | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
March 16, 2008

MIAMI - Based on his uneven rookie run, perhaps too much shouldn't be expected from Daequan Cook tonight against the visiting Mavericks.

Since returning from a stint in the NBA Development League that was equally inconsistent, the 20-year-old rookie has shot 1 of 9 against the Hawks, 9 of 20 against the Clippers, 2 of 9 against the Knicks and then 6 of 12 Friday night against the Magic.

In order, that's scoring totals of 2, 23, 6 and 15 points. Friday, there could have been even more against Orlando had Cook not again battled foul trouble.

"It's hard for him to get a rhythm and get a game going when you're limited by foul trouble and minutes," said assistant coach Ron Rothstein, who guided the team Friday with Pat Riley scouting in his dual role as team president. "But he's 20 years old, and that's what happens to most, unless you're LeBron or you're Kobe.

"You look at most of the other young guys and they're up and down, up and down, up and down. It's an important year; it's an important learning experience."

Cook said even more than the scoring, he has to develop consistency with his defense.

"In college, you give a little hand-check here and there, where as here you can't hand check at all," he said. "It's very difficult for me coming from a place where I'm used to having a hand on them, sliding with them."

Heat's Cook feeling his way through

MIAMI ? Daequan Cook has worked himself into a frustrating cycle. The Heat rookie guard needs more minutes to develop offensive consistency. But for much of the season, foul trouble has prevented him from staying on the floor.

"It's hard to get any rhythm and get a game going when you're limited by foul trouble and (a lack of) minutes," Heat assistant coach Ron Rothstein said. "But he's 20 years old. That's what happens."

Cook said not being able to use the hand check, a defensive tactic he used in high school and last year at Ohio State, has been a huge issue.

If foul trouble isn't a problem, Cook's minutes should increase significantly in the final 18 games of the season. He's taking the starting job previously held by Dwyane Wade, who is out the rest of the season with tendinitis in his left knee.

Cook, a first-round pick, has had a moderately successful rookie year and has been a bright spot for the Heat (11-53) in otherwise dismal season.

He's played in 43 games and he's averaging 7.6 points and 21 minutes per game. A mid-season shooting slump has dropped his field goal percentage to 38 percent, including 31.4 percent from three-point range. It also prompted a three-game assignment to Iowa of the Developmental League.

Cook said the length of the season wore him down a bit.

"Actually I was talking to (Heat guard) Chris Quinn in practice about how I've gone through a whole high school and college season put together and still have like 23, 24 (actually 18) games left," he said.

TORONTO (AP)?In a season of misery, the Miami Heat set a new low.

Andrea Bargnani and Anthony Parker each scored 14 points and the Toronto Raptors held Miami to the third-lowest point total in the shot-clock era, beating the Heat 96-54 on Wednesday night.

?I feel real bad for (the players) that they couldn?t make a few shots and just get out of the record books but that?s the way it goes,? Heat coach Pat Riley said.

Miami was just five points off the NBA record-low since the shot clock was introduced in the 1954-55 season, Chicago?s 49-point effort against the Heat in April 1999.

It was a tough night for Heat rookie Daequan Cook, who scored eight points on 3-for-19 shooting.

?This is a learning process right now,? Cook said. ?It?s just about getting better from here on out.?

Q&A with Daequan Cook

By the time the Miami Heat sent Daequan Cook down to the Developmental League, he was ready to embrace it. He had played two minutes in the Heat's previous eight games.
His stint ? three games for the Iowa Energy for games in Albuquerque, N.M., Anaheim and Los Angeles from March 2-7 ? had the desired effect.

"I went a few games where I was in a big slump," said Cook, a former Dunbar High School and Ohio State guard who scored 58 points for the Energy. "That was one of the reasons Coach (Pat Riley) had me go down to the D-League for a few games."
Cook's representatives said the Heat have said privately they'll pick up the option for Cook's third year. Cook hopes not to have another D-League trip, but he learned from it.

Long season, but no regrets for Dunbar grad Cook

The former Wolverines star has had ups and downs in his first year as a pro.

This whole season has been like a swift elbow to the head for the Miami Heat.
"It's been real tough," rookie Daequan Cook said. "This is a learning process right now."

The Dunbar High School graduate and former Ohio State guard, who was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in June 2007 and then traded to the Miami Heat, joined a team one year removed from an NBA title.
Miami has the NBA's worst record (13-61) and barely resembles the preseason roster. The Heat lost Alonzo Mourning, Dwayne Wade, Udonis Haslem and Dorell Wright to season-ending injuries. Jason Williams and Shawn Marion have missed time due to nagging ailments.
Shaquille O'Neal was traded to Phoenix, then Shaq ripped Miami coach Pat Riley. The current roster is sprinkled with 10-day contract and Development League players.
