I'm glad DQ is playing for a team whose fans seem to appreciate his game more than the ones in C-bus did ...:(

I just don't think thats it.....his game is just suited for the NBA, that's all. The shots he takes would get him an immediate spot on the bench at OSU. Taking your guy off the dribble and pulling up from 25 feet just isn't a high percentage shot, especially at the collegiate level. In the NBA, it's the norm, and that's what he's great at.

He's shooting well, and doesn't have a conscious, especially with D Wade hurt. He has all the freedom he could ever ask for, and it helps his game. Again, that type of game would make us throw up and rightfully so when you have Oden, Conley, and Lewis at your disposal.

I dont think most were inappreciative of his game, it was mostly a perception of lacking effort - especially on the defensive end. Everyone knew he was a scorer but we all wanted to see more from him than that. He's proving in the NBA just what we all wanted to see from him in Columbus. Regardless, he is and always will be a Buckeye first and the main reason we got Oden and Conley and made it to the NCAA finals.

Daequan?s NBA move panned out
by erik johns / January 24, 2008

The bad old days? Though Matta rarely started him, Cook thought he was ready for the pros

When Greg Oden and Mike Conley announced they would leave Ohio State early to enter the 2007 NBA Draft, Ohio State fans grudgingly accepted their decisions, even through they were bad for the program.

But fans were less upset than puzzled by the decision of a third freshman, Daequan Cook, to take a shot at the pros. Cook hadn?t even started for the Buckeyes, and his play tapered off in the second half of the season. There were also signs of immaturity and hints of a falling-out with coach Thad Matta.

The eye-rolling continued in May, after the former Dayton Dunbar High School star had a less-than-stellar pre-draft camp?and still decided to enter the draft rather than stay at OSU with an eye toward improving his draft value with a solid sophomore year.

Cook gave skeptics the first of several shocks when he was picked in Round 1, going 21st overall in a draft-and-trade deal that sent him to the Miami Heat. Most draft experts had him going at the very end of the first round at best.

Heat's Cook not in rookie All-Star game

ORLANDO -- Heat guard Daequan Cook thought he had a good shot of playing in the rookie-sophomore game at NBA All-Star weekend in New Orleans. But Cook didn't make the cut Wednesday as one of the nine rookies voted to the team by assistant coaches around the league.

Entering Wednesday's game against Orlando, the first-round draft pick from Ohio State has averaged 7.9 points in nearly 20 minutes per game. Before the Magic game, Cook ranked 10th in scoring for rookies. New Jersey Nets forward Sean Williams, who is 11th in scoring with 7.4 points per game, was selected to the rookie team. Toronto Raptors guard Jamario Moon, ninth in scoring at 8 points per game, also made the team.

Cook had averaged 7.9 points in nearly 20 minutes per game before Wednesday's game in Orlando. The 20th selection in the 2007 NBA Draft expressed some disappointment, though said he hopes to make the sophomore team next season.

''It's something a lot of rookies look forward to being a part of,'' Cook said. ``It's good to be part of, but it's time to move on.''

''I feel like I've played well enough to be involved in it,'' Cook said Tuesday night. ``I'd love to be part of All-Star weekend.''

The rookie team will feature Cook's former college teammate, Mike Conley (Memphis Grizzlies), who has played in only 19 games and averages 8.9 points. Kevin Durant (Supersonics) headlines the team that will feature his teammate, Jeff Green, former Gator Al Horford (Hawks), Juan Carlos Navarro (Grizzlies), Luis Scola (Rockets) and Jianlian Yi (Bucks).

Cook named Conley, Durant, Moon and Horford as players worthy of playing on the rookie team.

''After those guys, it's pretty tough to say who's better than who,'' Cook said.

Cook waits
Despite talking about varying his rotations now that the trading deadline has passed, Riley held out first-round pick Daequan Cook for the third time in the past four games Thursday in Houston.

"He had a bad two or three weeks and we have to try to figure out why," Riley said.

Cook, who is 15 of 66 (.227) from the field over his past 13 appearances, said Riley has not spoken with him about the recent benchings.

Heat may demote slumping Cook to D-League
By CHRIS PERKINS

MIAMI ? The up-and-down season of rookie guard Daequan Cook could go down further, as in a trip to the Iowa Energy, the Heat's affiliate in the National Basketball Developmental League, better known as the D-League.

Cook, the first-round pick who only played one season at Ohio State, and not even as a full-time starter, has been in a prolonged shooting slump. In his last 23 games he's shot 50 percent or better from the field just three times, going 47-for-144 (32.6 percent).

"It's been kind of tough," said Cook, 20, "but everybody goes through this process being a rookie." Cook has averaged 19.5 minutes while playing in 38 of Miami's 53 games. And he still is averaging a respectable 7.2 points per game. But he's shooting just 38.1 percent overall from the field, including a subpar 29.8 percent from three-point range.

"If we play him now and continues to play the way he's playing, he'll continue to lose more confidence," coach Pat Riley said after Saturday's 101-96 loss to Philadelphia.

Riley said "a good 10 or 12 games down" could benefit Cook.

Cook, who usually wears a smile and seems to be enjoying life, said he wouldn't have a problem with a trip to the NBA's minor league.

"It's always room for more work, and I really don't have a problem with that," he said. "I'm always staying positive and getting better to stay on this level."

Heat guard Cook heading to minors?
Riley says time in D-League could give rookie boost
By Ira Winderman | South Florida Sun-Sentinel

MIAMI - Apparently, Daequan Cook's time finally might be coming.

Just in another time zone.

Having benched the first-round pick in four of the past five games, Heat coach Pat Riley said he's considering demoting the 20-year-old shooting guard to the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League.

It would mark the first time in two years the Heat would utilize its D-League affiliate and the first time since its minor league affiliate left Fort Myers.

"I think people feel the coherent thing to do would be to just play him now and let him get NBA experience," Riley said. "But I also think he has to earn that, really has to earn that and he's got to show some success somewhere."

Heat's Cook, Anthony headed to minors
By Ira Winderman | Sun-Sentinel.com

MIAMI - Turns out Pat Riley's threat to demote rookie guard Daequan Cook was more than a threat.

Riley announced before Tuesday night's game against Sacramento that Cook and rookie center Joel Anthony would be sent Wednesday to the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League for five games.

Riley said he expects both players to receive the minutes that have not been available in the Heat rotation.

"I don't think anybody wants to send a player down or two players down, especially from Daequan's standpoint, and not get him decent, consistent minutes every night," Riley said. "I hope that is something that will be considered."

Heat sends Cook to development league

Wednesday, February 27, 2008 6:17 AM

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat will send first-round draft pick Daequan Cook to the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League today.

The former Ohio State guard played only two minutes in the previous five games.
Heat coach Pat Riley told Cook yesterday about the move, which is expected to last for five games. Backup center Joel Anthony will be joining Cook, as will one of the Heat assistant coaches.
"It's really about Daequan and Joel getting there and saying, 'Yes, sir. Whatever it takes. What do you want me to do? How are we going to do it? I'm going to play hard and play as hard as I can. I'm trying to get myself ready,' " Riley said. "So we'll see what happens in five games and then we'll make a determination from there."
