VANDALIA ? Olu Ashalou, a junior forward for Texas prep school Christian Life Center Academy, walked along the sideline and flipped open his cell phone. Daequan Cook sat courtside at Vandalia Butler's Student Activities Center, and Ashalou, whose team had earlier won its Flyin' to the Hoop game, needed Cook's number.
Ashalou used to have it. He got it sometime when he ran into Cook at numerous summer camps and team tryouts. But, it didn't work anymore.

Where has Cook gone? Its almost like he's coasting from time to time. I really want to see him step it up and at least get double digits and some offensive rebounds this game against Iowa. We're going to need his athleticism in the coming weeks.

NCAA's Top 20 Freshmen

#11 Daequan Cook | 6-5 guard, Ohio State

13.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 46.6 3-pt %

Cook has taken a backseat to Greg Oden since the big man made his debut in December, but there were times when the NBA-sized guard carried the Buckeyes early in the season. He already has six 20-point games and is OSU's most accurate gunner from long distance.

Cook rebuilds confidence by stepping up his defense

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Enough shots had rattled out to make Daequan Cook hesitant.
"I stopped taking the shots that I usually would take because I felt like my shot wasn't falling," the Ohio State freshman basketball player said. "I wasn't having the confidence I usually would have."

Shooting last six games:

5-12
1-8
2-8
4-11
4-6
0-3

Total: 16-48

Don't know if he's lost his flow, if Coach Matta has told him something, or what...but he's not the same Pooh as he was before Oden came back. Doesn't look likely that he'll be a high draft pick next year. He definitely showed something early on, though...so there's the possibility that the light comes on at the end of the year, which is always the best time to make an impression on scouts (Noah's stock last year, and Ty Thomas going #2, etc.).

his role has certainly changed. honestly i felt that cook kept us in the game last saturday. answer threes with threes before the run. you left out his minutes, cooks mins have decreased and i feel that due to that he has begun to force his offensive game (forcing 20some mins of offense into xteen mins). you cant deny his ability to rebound the ball, but the question mark to me remains on the defensive side of the ball. how many fouls has he picked up 20 feet from the basket, how many more 30 or 40 feet from the basket.

daequan is like every one of these freshmen, kids who play basketball. they will all continue to improve and evolve as players.

I believe he leads the team in fouls or did at one point......he seems to be out of synch the last few games and some of that can be contributed to his illness he had for a week or so, but last night he seemed tentative and unsure of how to attack on the offensive end. Cook has always excelled in transition and last night was not one of those games.

As far as his defensive abilities, well until he starts to play better team defense he will not start or get increased minutes. He has some work to do on the defensive end.

:oh: :io:
