• Lobbying for Mr. Basketball? Dunbar coach Peter Pullen was happy about winning. But one thing gnawed at him after the 58-42 win over Taft. "Only thing I wish was better was Daequan (Cook) putting on a show," Pullen said before North College Hill played. "I know this next ballgame that O.J. plays — especially if he plays extremely well — talk has been brewing all year long about which one is this and which one is that.

"You saw Daequan put on a full package. He has those moments when he's trying to get everybody involved and do everything else, it's hard to get him to score."

In the game's final moments, Cook had a breakaway. But instead of a rousing dunk, he finger-rolled a layup.

"He didn't jump with me," Cook explained about his defender.

• The game that never was: Pullen said Dunbar pursued a matchup against North College Hill. "Never got a call back," Pullen said. "I don't want to start anything, but I'm just saying ... I would have loved to play them this year... I thought it would have been good for basketball."

Taft coach Mark Mitchell addressed the two teams. North College Hill defeated Taft 80-72 in January.

"Both of the teams have great players," Mitchell said. "I understand Dunbar has a (starting) five that is pretty good from top to bottom. But North College Hill, I still say their role players are better than any role players we played against all year long."

Mitchell complimented Dunbar's teamwork.

"When you think about Dunbar, they really play together. They like each other," he said. "When a team does that, and you have talent, they're going to win the majority of their games."

• Rematch: Taft and Dunbar players said they expect to see each other again. "We will see them again later on down in the tournament sometime," Cook said.

That would be in the regional final. Dunbar has beaten Taft three straight times. A fourth would send the Wolverines to the D-II state tourney for the second straight season.

• Layups: Norris Cole scored Dunbar's first seven points ... Pullen grimaced when he saw his team's 20 turnovers on the stat sheet ... Covington Catholic defeated Ryle 77-48 in the first game.

As far as Daequan going West, I think sometimes players are placed on squads based on evening out the game. If the East needs centers and point guards then our Indiana duo go East. The West may have plenty of big guys and point guards but a little lacking in athletic 2/3 types. Just my guess. But I would sure like to get a little early national tv preview of some of our guys getting it done together.

Dunbar's Cook All-American

Hoops star one of 24 chosen for McDonald's game; first honored from Dayton in 28 years

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News

DAYTON | For Daequan Cook, McDonald's usually means a double cheeseburger, nuggets and a strawberry sundae.

On Thursday, it meant the official news that the Dunbar High School senior basketball player has been selected as a McDonald's All-American.

"This was one of my goals," Cook said. "I wanted to be known and recognized as one of the top players in the country."

A 6-foot-5 Ohio State recruit, Cook is averaging 25 points, 10 rebounds and 4.2 assists. He is shooting 39.3 percent from 3-point range and 77.5 percent at the foul line.

Cook is one of 24 players selected for the March 29 All-American game at San Diego State University's Cox Arena. The game will be televised live on ESPN at 10 p.m. Proceeds from the game benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Area McDonald's All-Americans include Dwight Anderson (Roth, 1978), John Paxson (Alter, 1979), Jason Collier (Springfield Catholic Central, 1996) and Ivan Harris (Spg. North, Spg. South, Oak Hill Academy, 2003). The team was first selected in 1977.

Players depart March 25, but Cook plans to be late. That's the day Dunbar (18-2) could be in the Division II state championship game. "They said they'd make an exception for me," Cook said.

His AAU and future Buckeyes teammates, Greg Oden and Mike Conley of Indianapolis North, will be there. Inexplicably, they are on the East team while Cook will play for the West.

Cook knows what to expect. He was a spectator at last year's McDonald's game in South Bend, Ind.

This time, he'll be on the court, on TV and lovin' it: "It'll give people a taste of how I really play."

Mr. Basketball Candidates
Now that the regular season is in the books, debate will begin on who will walk away with Ohio's prestigious Mr. Basketball award, given to the top player in the state amongst all divisions.

This year, it seems as if anyone could walk away with the honor. Unlike some years past, there is no "Chosen One."

Could a player from Northeast Ohio take the honor this year? There are several players who definitely are in contention. Lets take a look at some of the possible candidates.

Dayton Dunbar's Daequan Cook is a dynamic 6-foot-5 shooting guard who, like David Lighty, will be playing in Columbus next season. Cook seems to do everything on the court effortlessly. He was at his best in a regular season matchup against VASJ, scoring 41 points and adding 15 rebounds and eight assists.
