HIGH-SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Cook puts on a show, scores 41 in showcase

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Daequan Cook admitted he had more on his mind than a win for his team.

"I wanted to play my game," he said, "but I came out and played a little harder today to give people a taste of what it’s going to be like next year at Ohio State."

If this was a taste, look out for the mouthful.

Cook, one of the four highly touted members of the Buckeyes’ 2006 recruiting class, was stellar on his future home court yesterday, scoring a career-high 41 points to lead Dayton Dunbar to a 101-53 rout of Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph in the Martin Luther King Day Challenge in Value City Arena.

The game was arranged to showcase the 6-foot-4 Cook against future teammate David Lighty of VA-SJ, another of the 2006 signees. But Lighty, also 6-4, was overshadowed while playing with a heavy brace on his right knee. He had surgery to repair a torn ligament last March.

"The brace slowed him down a little bit," Cook said. "He can play better than that."

Lighty finished with 10 points, but Villa Angela-St. Joseph was overwhelmed quickly by Dunbar’s speed and energy and by Cook.

Cook, with an arsenal of crossover dribbles, slashing layups, tomahawk dunks and three-point rainbows, had 23 points by halftime, when Dunbar led 48-21.

"After that performance, you’ve got to love him and be happy he’s going to be your teammate next year," Lighty said.

The holiday matinee — which also featured 2008 OSU commitment B.J.

Mullens rallying Harvest Prep to a 69-61 victory over Licking Heights — drew a sparse crowd. But among the attendees were OSU coach Thad Matta, his assistant coaches and most of the team’s players.

"It shows you what type of family (mind-set) coach Matta has them in," Lighty said. "We don’t even go to Ohio State yet and still they’re here because they know we’re coming in next year. They were supporting us just like we supported them."

Cook, Lighty and nine other highly ranked prospects in the next three recruiting classes sat behind the Buckeyes’ bench Sunday during their doubleovertime loss to Michigan State. Four of the 11 recruits are signed; three others have committed.

"Nine or 10 recruits were here who probably will be starting in the next two years on any college team in America," Lighty said. "Hopefully, if they all come (to Ohio State), we can do something good with it."

Mullens, a 7-foot-1, 255-pound sophomore, scored 18 of his 21 points in last 11 minutes to rally Harvest Prep from an eight-point deficit.

"I hope all those (other recruits) stick around for my freshman year," he said.

Cook impresses his future coach

Matta hopes to tone down showmanship

By Doug Harris
Dayton Daily News
COLUMBUS | Dunbar senior Daequan Cook performed an array of dunks during a show-stopping, 41-point outing against Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph at Value City Arena on Monday, but he may have to curtail his repertoire when he gets to Ohio State.

Cook, whose sound fundamentals have made him one of the country's best high school players, tried a through-the-legs jam in the open court late in the fourth quarter. It thudded off the rim, forcing him to retrieve the ball and lay it in.

OSU coach Thad Matta, watching from the stands, admitted to being entertained. But he plans to encourage Cook to stick to his safer slams when he becomes a Buckeye.

"We'll get that one out of him," Matta said, grinning. "That will be (brought up in) the first meeting."

Matta actually had seen that acrobatic attempt once before.

"I saw him make one of those this summer," Matta said. "He's an incredible athlete."

Cook puts talent on display

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News
DAYTON | After amazing deep 3-pointers, dunks and passes, Daequan Cook proved his game to everyone. Well, almost everyone.

"A UD player (sitting courtside) was saying my shots were luck and all that," Cook said after Sunday evening's game at UD Arena. "I said, 'No, it's not.'
"I had to let them know it wasn't false. I had to show them I could hit more than just one shot. Now they know."
They sure do.
Cook scored 32 points to lead Dunbar to a 71-64 win over Trotwood-Madison. The crowd of 9,000 saw enough ooohs and aaaahs to make $6 a bargain.
UD coach Brian Gregory and some Flyers watched future teammate Chris Wright, who had a monster putback dunk, several swatted shots and 20 points.
But the showdown belonged to Cook and the Wolverines. "It was just a great environment," Dunbar coach Peter Pullen said. "And a 'Showtime' show."
Dunbar (13-2) built a 28-13 lead on Aaron Pogue's alley-oop dunk from Norris Cole. Trotwood (9-4) tied it at 32-32 behind Duane Morgan (21 points with four 3-pointers) and Wright's offensive rebounds.
Another Cook dunk and alley-oop to Pogue (six points) put Dunbar in command, 52-44.
"We showed we were the better team by playing under control," Cook said, despite the high-wire acts. "It's fun. You're supposed to have fun playing the game of basketball."
Dunbar held Rams' starters Ibrahim Marone and Armond Darby to four points apiece.
"We were overwhelmed with the game, the hoopla surrounding the game and the crowd," Trotwood coach Ike Thornton said. "We just weren't here.
"I told my guys, 'You can beat everybody in the world, but you have to show up for big games.' "
Starting his third game of the season, Cole scored 16 points while Mark Anderson added 13. Cook had four 3-pointers and showed the overall game that has Ohio State fans excited.
"He loves stages like this," Pullen said. "(Those dunks) turn him on and everybody back on."
