SF LaQuinton Ross (Memphis Hustle - NBA G-League)

early december would be much, MUCH better than early january.

Yea, if Q only misses the first 8 games he would have plenty of time to settle in as a role player and by the time the tourney rolls around, we'll never notice that he missed time.

Hopefully this works out for the better. There was a chance (still is but lower %) that Q could have a Dequan Cook type of freshman season on a team that has a deep run in the tourney and then leave for the NBA. Although there's still a chance at that, his role will probably be smaller with guys like Thompson and Sibert getting a chance to step up a steal some PT from Q.

Again, hopefully this is a blessing in disguise.

Missing all of preseason practice and the first 8 games + will set him way back as far as being a contributor this year. Working out on your own and playing/practicing with your teammates are two very separate items. Not only do I not see him settling in as a role player. I believe the only time he will see is garbage time if indeed he does come back.

Here's the deal - when you have unusual talent, you play. Greg Oden didn't really practice or play until the 8th game of the year (about the same time Ross can come back), that didn't mean squat. If Ross has the talent to contribute this year, which it appears he does, then he will play. If he for whatever reason isn't as good as he seems, then he won't.

Oden was not only the best player in his class, he was a once in every ten years type of recruit. Ross should be in fine shape, its the learning of the system and building chemistry that will put him behind. I do think his talent will get him on the floor whenever he is available, but his role will likely be less than it would have been.

You get the idea. Talent is what gets you on the court as a freshman, that's the bottom line. I don't think his role will necessarily be much different if he joins the team in early December - it's not like he was a likely starter. I thought he was going to be a key reserve, and if everything goes as planned that's still what he can be.

If you are going to pick someone from that class, the more apt comparison would be Cook as far as comparing skill level and type of play and competition for PT. Cook played a decent amount as a frosh, but if he had missed all of the preseason practices and the first 8 games, I doubt he would have played as much. There wasn't anyone on that team that was close to Oden's talent so of course he was going to play, but Cook and now Ross while talented aren't on the same level and have more competition.

Again, I think Ross gets on the floor if he comes back in Dec because reports are he was doing well. I do think he will have fallen behind some from the time off and will be worked back in versus potentially beginning the season in the 7-8 man rotation.

There will be atleast a 9-man rotation this season. Why don't people get that? It's not that hard.

I think the reason its hard to fathom is that it was believed we would have an 8-9 man rotation last year and we ended up with 6-7.

Matta has shown that he will play the best players as many minutes as they can handle if the their substitutes are much of a drop off. So, Sullinger and Buford will play 33-34 mpg because they are that much better than the guys that would be replacing them. Craft will be in the 30-32 minute range and I think Thomas about the same because he is by far the best option we have at the PF. I personally think its fairly safe to say that those 4 guys will play about 130 minutes per game (we are talking about competitive games) and that leaves 70 minutes for everyone else and one of those is a starter. Either Scott or Sibert will start and my guess is the starter playing about 25 minutes and the other 20. Now thats 175 minutes for the top 6 guys. Its hard for me to fathom seeing 3 or more guys split those 25 minutes. Now maybe Sibert isn't any better than Thompson or Smith and MAtta elects to play a couple of them evenly, but I think once a guy separates himself, Matta goes with that guy versus playing guys to develop a bench/experience.

I think it will look something like this.

Craft - 32 mins
Sully - 32 mins
Buford - 32 mins
Thomas - 28 mins
Scott - 28 mins
Sibert - 16 mins
Williams - 12 mins
Ravenel - 10 mins
Thompson -10 mins

Spoon, Zelle, and T-Mac won't play meaningful mins.

Because Thad will not go that deep. Never has. That is his coaching philosophy.
'06-'07. 9-deep.

when discussing how far into his bench, i think one must consider the quality of players at the 8th, 9th, and even 10th spots. when the players at the far end of the bench are 11th hour juco signees and transfers who rarely played at their first school, how far can a coach really go?

or think about this way: if amir williams replaced kyle madsen on the '07-'08 team, do you think williams would have averaged only 4.2 minutes?

It's understandable how some of his squads have had only 6-7 man rotations, but last year's was kind of surprising to see DeShaun/Sibert/Lenzelle barely get time. DeShaun only got rotational minutes in a handful of games it seemed like. It also seems like something that would have helped our squad in the tournament in the last two years, players seemed slightly overplayed. Then again none of us are Coach Matta and have no real insight into the team/team chemistry.

these seven players are guaranteed to get decent minutes:

craft
scott
sibert
buford
thomas
williams
sullinger

before the season started, i thought that ross was the most likely of the remaining players to get solid minutes. my expectation was that matta would go a minimum of 8-deep. i still think that the team will go at least 8-deep, with 8 sounding about right; i just don't know who the player or players would be. i hope ross returns in early december.
