Evaluation

April, 2010: There is no questioning this guy's talent level. I watched him easily go for 30 on the opening night against a good team from Houston (Real Deal in the Rock), and it seemed like he barely broke a sweat. He has a pure stroke from 3 and beyond with the size and release to get his shot off being heavily guarded. When you crowd him he can put the ball on the floor for drives to the rim. With his length he can finish over you with soft shots around the goal or pull-up jump shots. However, the game stops when he is on the floor. Throughout the night he posted from 18' like an NBA guy which made for no movement on the offensive end. When he got the ball in his hands you knew it was going up. Ross is a very gifted scorer on the floor, but he will have to learn to assert more energy on the defensive end and play with other guys at the next level to be great.

February, 2010: While Ross' performance was far from dominating (PrimeTime Shootout), his tools and potential were obvious. His tremendous frame is well documented with great size and length, broad shoulders, and a sturdy build that will eventually fill out. He shoots a silky smooth ball with deep range and has the high release to get it off anytime he wants. He showed some developing versatility attacking to both sides off the dribble, going to the low post against smaller defenders, and making a couple of heady passes when capturing the defense's attention but gave away some of his length by playing too erect off the bounce and shied away from contact when finishing at the rim. He was also turnover prone on the perimeter, being both lackadaisical and soft with the ball at times. Defensively he was steady but unspectacular, using his length effectively and showing a good understanding of defensive concepts (switching equal screens) but not assertive enough to be a playmaker on that end.

LaQuinton Ross, a 6-foot-8 small forward at Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J., was named a top performer at the LeBron James Skills Academy by MaxPreps.com.

The long and lanky swingman, often plagued with injury, delivered on his much talked-about potential. He used his size and mobility to score inside-and-out and more importantly, he defended the perimeter. Maryland, Ohio State and West Virginia are following him.

LaQuinton Ross
A year ago at this time, LaQuinton Ross looked like a burned out basketball prodigy.

Once considered the top 2011 talent in America, the 6-foot-8 Ross has seen his game dissected and downgraded consistently over the past two years.

"I got hurt at the beginning of last summer and hurt my ankle real bad," Ross said. "I didn't have a good summer."

"You have to hear people criticize your game when they really don't know what is going on. They didn't know it was an ankle injury. I don't like to make excuses but that's what was going on."

Friday at the adidas Super 64, Ross made a strong case for a return to elite status in the rising senior class, scoring 18 points and controlling the action as a point-forward in MBA Elite's blowout win over the Michigan Mustangs.

Ross consistently opened things up for teammate Rodney Hood, a 6-8 wing who poured in 27 points (more on him tonight).

A native of Jackson, Miss., but student and player at Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J., Ross did it all at Rancho High School on Friday. His ball-handling and shot looked much-improved. He drove-and-dished the Mustangs to death. Most of all, he looked more mature and purposeful on the court than he has at any time in the last two years. He is having fun.

"I'm back this summer," Ross said. "I started off good this summer and am going to finish off good this summer."

Recruiting-wise, things are still wide open but he did mention four schools that have been on his mind lately.

"Ohio State has been on me really hard. Maryland, West Virginia, Baylor have been in there, too," Ross said. "I'll probably narrow it down at the end of the summer to my top five."

Former JPS star LaQuinton Ross grows up, learns life lessons in time away from Mississippi On his own

Murrah basketball star LaQuinton Ross headed to New Jersey in January looking for a better opportunity to succeed on the court and in the classroom.

It turns out there?s something else to be gained moving 1,200 miles from the place you?ve always called home.

Ross no longer needs someone else to fix his meals.

?I can cook spaghetti and Hamburger Helper, nothing too big,? said Ross, who played in Monday night?s second annual Cancer Research Benefit Showcase at Tougaloo College. ?It?s almost like getting ready for college. I wash my own clothes. When I?m hungry, I have to cook it myself unless the coaches do it. Basically, it?s like being in dorms.?

Ross, a 6-foot-8 senior and a consensus Top 75 prospect nationally in the Class of 2011, has attended Life Center Academy in suburban Philadelphia since leaving Jackson.

Ross shared a house with six teammates, getting a feel for what lies ahead when he enrolls in college a year from now. Ross said Monday his top five schools ?in no order? are Syracuse, West Virginia, Ohio State, Baylor and Mississippi State.

Life Center plays an independent schedule, facing many of the nation?s best-known high school programs. Ross averaged about 16 points upon joining the team after his midseason exit from Murrah.

Omhar Carter of Jackson, a longtime summer league coach and mentor to Ross, thinks the change has been beneficial for the 18-year-old.

LCA, which was established in 1975 and has about 120 students in grades 9-12, offers scholarships based on financial need with the playerfamilies of the players picking up the rest of the bill in the neighborhood of $3,000 per semester, Carter explained.

?I think it?s helped Q as far as maturity,? Carter said. ?His family just decided it was time for him to get away. Q had a lot of people around him, friends and stuff, and he just wasn?t focusing. His mom sat down and told me she really wanted him out of here. His mom has done a good job of making sure he?s had a good living situation where he could get church and build values.

?His GPA is good, I think around 2.6 to 2.8. He?s been passing everything with A?s and B?s. The school is strictly academics. They eliminate all the distractions. It?s just school and basketball.?

Carter said the move has also helped Ross on the court ? even if his ranking is yet to mirror that development. As a freshman at Callaway, Ross was billed as one of the nation?s top five prospects in his class.

?Q was touted as the next LeBron, the next phenom kid,? Carter said. ?He had bumps along the way. The ankle injury (last summer) is really the main reason he dropped. A lot of people started doubting him and thinking he wouldn?t make a comeback. But this year a lot of coaches have told me that no matter what the scouts say, they don?t see anybody in the top 20 in the country who?s better than Q.?

For his part, Ross is just enjoying his time back at home until he returns to New Jersey for the start of school in a few weeks.

?I enjoy being here. I miss Mississippi a lot, mainly my family and my friends,? he said. ?But I feel like this has worked out for me.?

Could Ross return to his home state for college? Deville Smith, his longtime summer league teammate, committed to MSU last spring.

?They have a good chance,? Ross said. ?I think playing with him and maybe Rodney Hood, too, would be good.?

Here is the rest of the article Buckskin had linked on 8/3 (just wanted to preserve it here in case it won't be available later). Buckskin's link in his above post is still good.
