SF Justin Ahrens (transfer to Loyola Marymount)

Absolutely shocked he didnt play more in the tourneys. Head scratcher
i found this curious, too. not playing ahrens versus iowa state was understandable. we didn't need guards and wings to pull defenders off of kaleb. prohm was more than happy to let our big guy do whatever he wanted in 1-on-1 situations with plenty of surrounding space. sampson, on other hand, committed to hounding kaleb at every chance available. sure, we came out hot from behind the arc, so the need for ahrens wasn't there. but certainly in the second half as we hovered around a 10-point deficit the last 10 minutes of the game, there was an absolute need for our best catch-and-shoot player (i.e., not a set shooter who must square up like everyone else). despite coming in cold, ahrens in the last 4 to 6 minutes would have been especially nice to see. what was there to lose at that point?

Almost invariably Coach Holtmann will give minutes to players that are solid defensively regardless of their offensive ability.

I am of the opinion that Ahrens and Washington are two of the most important pieces moving forward into next season. We absolutely need them to be ready to play for floor spacing. We simply do not have enough shooting on this roster at this point.

but when down 10 in what is shaping up to be the last 6 minutes of the season?

definitely agree. every good team (except for this year's duke) needs shooters whose primary offensive role is to can 3s with solid efficiency. all advanced metrics point to success on offense centering around shots within 5 feet and outside of 21 feet. i have doubts whether walker, muhammad, andre, jallow, or any other player besides ahrens and washington can be that much of a threat beyond the arc next season. i know muhammad shot 37.5% and washington shot 30.6%, but i still have more confidence in duane becoming a reliable deep threat. muhammad's shot is just too flat to expect consistency. maybe andre's percentage will increase to 38%+ with enough off-season work, though. he's confident and the form looks good.

Hope he's ready...really gonna need his shooting this year
along with kaleb's back-to-the-basket moves, ahrens might be the other player who can give the team something that no one else can. washington and gaffney also have the tools to be solid shooters, but only ahrens has the c̶o̶n̶f̶i̶d̶e̶n̶c̶e arrogance you want from a guy who's going to put up that 25-footer without a nanosecond of forethought.

despite the 2010-11 team having sully, buford, and lighty, i thought by far the scariest player was diebler. every opponent dreaded him making an early three. ahrens can be that same guy for us, though in fewer minutes from off the bench.

If Ahrens ever gets a tight handle and is able to create space for his shot... it is over with

I thought favorably of that comparison when I watched him at his peak last year. Threebler would be a welcome career trajectory.
