Sunday Musings: Summer League ends as reality sets in for NBA hopefuls

LAS VEGAS - The Sacramento Kings ended their Summer League adventure with a resounding victory Friday afternoon over the Atlanta Hawks. It was fun and entertaining and in the end, a group of players walked off the court smiling, wondering if they will ever suit up in an NBA uniform ever again.

It is the harsh reality of Summer League. Young men from all over the world jump at the chance to play in the sweltering heat of Las Vegas or Orlando, each with a dream that they will do enough to earn an invitation to training camp or even better ? an NBA contract.

For most it is a pipe dream.

We have spoken about David Lighty in the past. He is a jack-of-all-trades wing who can defend three positions, handle the ball and when called upon, score. It just so happened that the Kings brought the former Buckeye star onto the roster during Summer League, giving us an opportunity to take a good look at a player known for his unselfish approach to the game.

When we began chatting, I shared with him what I call the ?David Lighty Theory?. To my surprise, a friend of his had sent him a link early that day, which made for a good ice breaker.

For teams like Sacramento, it?s not about a player like Lighty. They bring their highly touted draft picks like Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum. The entire team is designed around these prospects with the hopes that they will gain a little bit of experience before camp opens in October. It is a painful exercise in carrot dangling and there are plenty willing to chase the stick.

?That?s the toughest thing,? Lighty told Cowbell Kingdom following the Kings? final Summer League game. ?Especially with Summer League. Guys have draft picks, guys have players that are on the team already and they are trying to develop them. A guy like me, you want to make a mark on the game of course, but the first way to do that is with scoring. But they are going to go with those players first.?

NBA Summer League: David Lighty's long road to an NBA roster
By Sam Vecenie @Sam_Vecenie on Jul 24 2013

David Lighty is the prototypical teammate and a proven winner. So why can't he get a full-time job in the NBA? Here is his story.

David Lighty walked out of the tunnel of Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas wearing ice wrapped around his knees and a smile on his face. Having torn an ACL in high school and broken a foot in college, few realize the importance of keeping his body in pristine shape like he does.

The smile Lighty displays comes from the satisfaction of knowing he made a great final impression on the Kings' summer league staff, after scoring 16 points on 8/9 shooting during their final summer league game on Friday. Down the stretch, the 6'6" swingman had the unenviable task of defending both point guard Dennis Schroeder and power forward Mike Scott, demonstrating the type of versatility he is capable of bringing to a team defensively.

"Whatever the coach asks me to do, I'll do," Lighty told me when we spoke after the game.

Statements and sentiments like that come naturally to Lighty. This is a guy who truly understands his role on a basketball team, and doesn't ever need a play run for him to be successful. You see, if there are two words that exemplify what Lighty is, they're the two words he uses most in conversation: teammate and winner.

"Scoring is definitely a big part of the game, and people love that part, but winning is even better." - David Lighty

After my interview, I went through and counted how often he used those words in the five minute span. He used the words "team" or "teammate" 14 times, and the words "win" or "winner" 9 times, showing just what his priorities are. He takes pride in being Ohio State's all-time wins leader more than he does in his quite impressive overall statistical performance there.

"Everybody likes a winner," Lighty said. "At the end of the day, if you have zero points, but have five rebounds, five assists, and five steals and you win, I'm happy. Scoring is definitely a big part of the game, and people love that part, but winning is even better."

David Lighty and Eric Dawson will be non-roster training camp for the Hawks.

The Hawks will begin training camp for the 2013-14 season in October. The first preseason game is Oct. 7 at the Heat.

Lighty, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, played collegiately at Ohio State from 2006-11. He most recently played professionally for JSF Nanterre in France’s LNB Pro A League.

Atlanta Hawks 2013 Player Profile: David Lighty
October 12, 2013
by John Raffel

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

David Lighty is bidding in training camp to make a name for himself as a shooting guard, who can give the Atlanta Hawks key depth in that area.

If Lighty can get the job done during the NBA preseason and continue to improve, he’ll have a key impact on this Hawks squad.

Lighty has earned his shot after having a strong career at Ohio State and averaging 12.1 points as a senior. He played last season in France and did a credible job with 12.5 points per game and connecting on 43 percent of his three-point tries. He also played in the Euroleague and Italy.

This summer, Lighty saw action in the Orlando Summer League with the Brooklyn Nets and averaged 7.76 points and 2.3 assists in three games. He played in the Las Vegas League in a Sacramento Kings jersey and averaged 6.5 points per game.

In one preseason game with the Hawks, Lighty saw almost 10 minutes of action, but had just two assists and one rebound on the stat sheet. He’ll obviously have to get involved more offensively in future Hawks preseason games to have a shot at making the team.

The Hawks would like to see Lighty be consistent on his shooting percentages. If he does, that would help his chances of making the team. In the summer league, he was 43.8 percent from the floor, 38.5 percent in threes and 78.6 percent in free throws.

If he’s able to get a roster spot, Lighty would likely come off the bench with the assignment of scoring critical points while giving the Atlanta starters a break. He can have a key impact on the team in that regard. But right now, it’s all up to him.

Lighty has also appeared in just one exhibition game. He did not score in 9:42 against the Bobcats.

Lighty, a 6-5 guard from Ohio State, has played professionally in Italy and France.

“For me, to embrace the opportunity, embrace everything and just be me,” Lighty said of his decision to try out with the Hawks. “Go with it and do the best I can. Find my way to leave an impact on a game every time I’m in there.”

Lighty officially back to Nanterre
on October 28th, 2013

By Nikos Varlas/ [email protected]

Nanterre was searching for a guard, its former leader David Lighty was cut by the Atlanta Hawks and his return to France is officially announced. The MVP of the last French league finals is back with the team he led to the title and the question is if he can help them have success in Euroleague.

According to the club website: “During the summer, coach Pascal Donnadieu had always been in touch with the player about his possible return. This relationship has led to a quick agreement. His arrival was accelerated by the hip injury of Kevin Lisch”. However, Lighty is not expected to be used by the team this week in Euroleague.
