SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

So what you get him for one or two big ten tourney games and 1 or 2 tourney games?

Not worth it, especially when he is not 100% yet and isn't in game shape...There are basically 3 weeks left in the season and 6 or so games...It would take him till the tourney to be cleared to play for sure, and then how long to get into game shape?

And then you get into him maybe pushing his foot too hard in an attempt to get into game shape.

It's just NOT worth it, as you said.

I thought the writing was on the wall for Lighty weeks ago. I'm surprised a return is even being considered but it appears that is the case.

I'd rather pursue the redshirt and maybe have David for two more years. The leadership and experience he could provide would really help us. What little he could do this season isn't worth forfeiting that chance.

Let's just kick Iowa's ass tonight and lay any return this season thoughts to rest.

David is done for the rest of the season. End of story.

Ohio State 60, Iowa 58: Turner sparks crucial win

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Evan Turner's ears started filling up at halftime. By the end of the game, they were full.
David Lighty was in them.

Lighty, the injured captain of the Ohio State men's basketball team, isn't coming back this season. He said as much after the Buckeyes' 60-58 win over Iowa last night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

"I'm done," he said.

Off-topic, last week when I was in the hospital I was assigned a student nurse for a couple hours. I told the first-year student that I had been an orthopedic surgeon before my injury and then forgot that I had told her that before she left almost 2 hours later. The next day another student nurse came into my room and said that he heard that I was a physician. I said "who said that?". He said his instructor had told him that. I told them I had not been not to let anyone else know so that my first student's pride would not be hurt.

The point of this is that any time that we have a questionable sports injury I do not know if you should refer to my judgment or not.

Lighty has been working out and he is moving pretty well, but there is no reason to risk it and there is reason for him to come back for 2010...

Here's hoping that David has no lingering effects from the injury and comes back with some serious fire next season!

David Lighty is "full go," Matta said, after missing the last 26 games of the season with a broken bone in a foot. Lighty is expected to be granted a medical redshirt by the Big Ten and have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

"I do not see any (adverse effects) from the injury," Matta said. "He?s stringing consecutive days (of training) together and it seems like he?s in great shape."

Men's Basketball: Lighty, Kecman on the road to recovery

Issue date: 5/19/09

Not everyone got to enjoy the Ohio State men's basketball team as they charged into the NCAA tournament in March. Forwards David Lighty and Nikola Kecman both suffered season-ending injuries, planting them on the bench and leaving the rest of the team to fend for their lives against Siena.

Ohio State junior forward David Lighty jumps up for a layup during the Nov. 13, 2008 exhibition game against Walsh. OSU won 90-63. Lighty broke a bone in his left foot on Dec. 17 against Jacksonville.

Lighty fractured a bone in his left foot after his career-high 21 points in a Dec. 17 victory over Jacksonville. Despite going down during OSU's blazing start, Lighty felt fortunate it happened when it did.

"That probably was the best time for me to get hurt if I was to get hurt," he said. "If it was later on in the season, it would've had me down a lot more."

Since he played in only seven games, Lighty was granted a redshirt, saving him a year of eligibility and leaving him with two more seasons in scarlet and gray. His foot inched toward full recovery near season's end, but Lighty didn't want to take the risk of playing and forfeit the redshirt.

"I was getting there, but I wasn't fully 100 percent yet," he said. "I practiced a little bit, doing some things with the team, and sometimes I'd have to sit out because of my foot. I wasn't cleared to play yet, so I wasn't healthy yet."

The redshirt will allow Lighty to play an extra season with what is now a more experienced and battle-tested team after reaching the field of 65.

"I always try to look at the brighter side of things in every situation," Lighty said. "This gives me time to keep working on my game and get better and also to be around my teammates."

Both players have become regulars at the gym, working to return to basketball-playing shape after lengthy layoffs. Lighty said the lack of action on the court led to weight gain.

"I was up to 235, so [the team] kept calling me linebacker and tight end," he said. "I've been working out and running again and getting back on the court to get back in shape."

While Lighty nears 100 percent, he is still searching for the burst of speed that made him so effective before the injury, he said.

"I would say I'm 95 percent," he said. "Sometimes I don't have the explosiveness like I did back before it happened. I try to jump off my left foot, but it's getting there each and every day."

Ohio State's David Lighty back to 100 percent for Canada trip: Video
by Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
Thursday August 27, 2009

David Lighty hasn't played a basketball game against real opposition in more than eight months, so a trip to Canada is a big deal for him.

Lighty's last season ended when he broke his foot against Jacksonville on Dec. 17. The Villa Angela-St. Joseph grad missed the rest of the season and took a redshirt year. Now he's back and with his teammates in Canada as the Buckeyes prepare for three exhibition games in Windsor, Ontario, on Friday, Saturday and Monday.

College teams are allowed to take an international trip once every four years and this is the first trip for Ohio State since a European jaunt in 2001. OSU coach Thad Matta is a noted homebody, so this "foreign tour" is as close to the United States as possible, just over the bridge from Detroit.

The timing is not a coincidence. Incoming freshmen are not allowed to join trips like these, so Matta planned this knowing he would not have any freshmen this season. There are no new faces on the team - just Lighty returning from injury and 7-footer Zisis Sarikopoulos joining the action after sitting out the mandatory year following his transfer from Alabama-Birmingham.

The Buckeyes, as part of the rules of a trip like this, were allowed 10 days of early practice to prepare. That practice, combined with a bunch of old faces instead of Matta's usual crop of talented but uncertain freshmen, gives Ohio State a big leg up on this season. Watch out Canada.

Lighty, by the way, is back at 100 percent.

HOOP THOUGHTS
Twenty questions

Ohio State: Will David Lighty be better than before?

A 6-5 junior power forward, David Lighty was the Buckeyes' most experienced player coming into last season, and he got off to a great start before breaking his foot after the seventh game. After taking a medical redshirt, Lighty returns to a team that has a little more overall experience but is suspect at the two most important positions, point guard and center. If Ohio State is going to be a factor in March, it will need Lighty to be a force at both ends.

The good news is that Ohio State is full of talented wing players, led by 6-7 junior swingman Evan Turner, who will play more minutes at the point after leading the Buckeyes in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals. The team has so many wings that 6-5 sophomore William Buford, who may well end up being the best pro on this team, could come off the bench. Thad Matta had to spend so much time teaching his kids how to play offense last season that he played a lot of zone defense.

Now, Matta hopes to get back to the man-to-man that has been a staple of so many of his teams, but he needs a strong, experienced, athletic (if undersized) power forward to make it all work. Lighty should be that that guy, if he is fully recovered from his injury.
