Boys basketball player of the year

David Lighty, VASJ

Before he played his first high school game, David Lighty was well aware of the storied history of Villa Angela-St. Joseph and the legacy some of the all-time greats had created at Viking Village.

After four years, 1,500 points, three All-Ohio nods and more than 70 wins, the 6-foot-5 senior has laid claim to his place in the school's history and the VASJ legacy.

Following a season in which he averaged 20.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, seven assists and 4.5 steals, the Ohio State signee also cemented his legacy as one of the best boys basketball players to come out of this area. Lighty leaves as a two-time News-Herald Player of the Year, earning the same honor this year that he earned after his junior season.

"When I was younger, I would walk in the gym and see Clark's (Kellogg) number on the floor and see all the banners, and I knew that is a big reason I wanted to go to VASJ," Lighty said. "Hopefully, I made my own mark at Viking Village, not only for what I did on the basketball court, but for what I contributed to the school, as well.

"God blessed me with talent to play the game I love, and my mother, grandmother and friends have kept me grounded and never let me think I was bigger or better than anyone else."

Lighty might not have thought that, but most people in the media who saw him play thought he was pretty special, and OSU coach Thad Matta was among a throng of Division I college coaches who certainly thought his talent was unique.

The three-time All-Ohioan was named Division III Northeast Lakes District Player of the Year the past three seasons. Being recruited heavily by some of the top programs in the country before eventually selecting the Buckeyes - and becoming part of one of the nation's top recruiting classes - did not prevent Lighty from racing up the career lists in several categories at VASJ. While Kellogg still safely holds most of the school records, Lighty did break the single-season regular-season game mark by scoring 49 points against Trinity last year.

A versatile guard who played every position on the floor at some point this season, including point guard and in the low post, Lighty rebounded from a torn ACL in his right knee in last season's district final win to lead the Vikings to the state final four in Columbus. Lighty scored 32 points in a semifinal win over Wheelersburg and was named to the all-tournament team at Value City Arena, but VASJ was defeated by nationally ranked Cincinnati North College Hill in the state final.

A state championship banner is about the only thing he was not able to give Viking Village and the fans.

"I was happy that we were finally able to go to state in my senior year, and I am thankful I have earned the opportunity to play at Ohio State and continue my career there," Lighty said. "Hopefully, I will be able to perform and do some of the same things I was able to do at VASJ.

"I know when I get to OSU a lot of people will look at me as just some little freshman. Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to prove that I belong and I can make a contribution to the team."

Oden, Conley give a preview Ohio State's 4 recruits play together for the 1st time and put together an impressive performance in all-star victory

CHICAGO -- For years, the Roundball Classic has been a preview of what's to come in basketball as a showcase for players such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal as they came out of high school.

Sunday afternoon at the United Center, it provided a glimpse into one of the top college basketball recruiting classes in recent years.

The four high school players in the Greg Oden-led Ohio State class played together for the first time, starting for the West in a 118-102 victory over the East.

The 7-foot Oden scored a game-high 21 points on 10-for-12 shooting, with 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Mike Conley, Oden's teammate at Lawrence North, had a game-high 13 assists -- two shy of the record in the 42-year-old Roundball Classic -- seven points and eight rebounds.

Daequan Cook, a 6-5 shooting guard from Dayton, Ohio, had 18 points, and David Lighty, a 6-5 small forward from Cleveland, added 14 points.
Oden, Conley and Cook have played together in summer basketball, going 94-4 with Spiece Indy Heat the past two years. Lighty joined the group Sunday and slipped in seamlessly.

"It was great, kind of a preview of what's to come," Conley said. "I've never played with David before, but he showed out. He converted a lot of my passes, made it easy for me to get assists.

"He fit in real well. He's very unselfish, just like the rest of us. I think that's why Thad Matta recruited him."

The four Ohio State recruits, all ranked in the top 30 in the nation, were joined in the starting five by Lance Thomas, an uncommitted 6-8 power forward from Scotch Plains, N.J., who said he's deciding between Duke and Rutgers.

"Those guys are great," Thomas said. "With Greg, Daequan, Lighty and Mike Conley, that's a starting five right there. You can put anybody in there, and that's a great starting five."

The four Ohio State recruits combined for 60 points, 24 rebounds, 20 assists and shot 26-for-41 from the field.
On one play, Oden tipped a rebound to Lighty, who threw ahead to Cook for a fast-break dunk. On another, Oden cleared space inside and Conley drove the lane and flipped the ball to Lighty for a dunk.

"It was awesome. He dunked on me twice," Oden said of Lighty, referring to alley-oops when Lighty outjumped him. "Daequan usually does that. The first oop, I jumped up and he caught it over me."

Oden had little trouble in the post against an opposing front line that had 6-10 Alex Stephenson (headed to North Carolina), 6-9, 280-pound Derrick Caracter (Louisville) and 6-11 Brian Carlwell (Illinois). Those three shot a combined 14-for-30.

The game was a homecoming for Mike Conley Sr., who coached the West. The Spiece Indy Heat coach, Conley Sr. won a high school state basketball title with Chicago Luther South in 1980 and still has family here.

"It's a great way to sort of end my career with these guys," said Conley Sr., who has coached his son and Oden in summer basketball since they were in sixth grade. "It was great coaching all these guys. I've always been one to tell them a little bit here and a little bit there, and it's going to be a lot of fun to watch their careers."

As for what to expect from the 'Thad Five' -- the class includes a junior college power forward -- Lighty said, "Hopefully we'll be good enough to win a national championship. That's on our minds. That's what we all want to happen."

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: David Lighty

A year later, Lighty's star shines even brighter

Tuesday, April 11, 2006 Eddie Dwyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
David Lighty admits he's a little superstitious.
The Villa Angela-St. Joseph senior always sat in the same seat on bus rides to away games and occupied the same seat in the chapel for pregame prayers.
"And if I did well in the game before, I wore the same thing to the next game," said the Vikings' three-time All-Ohio selection. "And I always wear my Buckeye beads."
The beads are a tribute to Ohio State, where Lighty is headed as part of one of the nation's top five recruiting classes.
A four-year mainstay at VASJ, Lighty strung together his multiple athletic skills, exceptional leadership qualities and good-natured, optimistic approach to life, and led the Vikings to their first state final four appearance in nine years. And he did it after off-season ACL surgery, an injury he suffered just over a year ago.
Lighty, a 6-5 guard, has been chosen as The Plain Dealer's Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Referred to by coach Dave Wojciechowski as simply "our guy," Lighty rekindled memories of the Clark Kellogg era by leading the Vikings to a state runner-up finish in Division III. Kellogg, a CBS college basketball analyst, showed the way for St. Joseph's (now VASJ) Division I state runner-up team in 1979 and went on to have an All-America career at Ohio State and a solid NBA career.
Lighty said he hopes to eventually follow in Kellogg's footsteps, but right now he is going to enjoy a little bit about being a 17-year-old.
"I'm a little goofy," he said with a smile as wide as his talents. "I'm an outgoing type of guy. I like to joke around."

Future Buckeyes perform admirably in leading West

David Lighty
Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Cleveland, Ohio)

Playing with three other members (Oden, Cook, Conley) of Ohio State's vaunted recruiting class, Lighty fit right in with his unselfish, superb all-around game. In 23 minutes of play, Lighty scored 14 on 6-of-10 shooting, drained a pair of 3-pointers and had two steals.

Former VASJ Basketball Standout Arrested

POSTED: 9:12 am EDT June 8, 2006
UPDATED: 9:35 am EDT June 8, 2006
CLEVELAND -- Three men were arrested after a jogger called police saying he had been shot by a BB gun. Officials said David Lighty and Jimmy McCloud, both of Cleveland, and Darryl Rushton of Euclid were arrested after police found four soft BB guns. The three are graduates of Villa Angela-St. Joseph's High School. Lighty was a basketball standout. He has chosen The Ohio State University to attend in the fall. The jogger said he heard one of the men say, "I got him."The three face charges of assault, criminal trespassing and criminal act on school property.

Quoted the article above for the lazy people. I agree with an arrest for this, but it sounds like the location of the crime might get him in far more trouble then one would expect.

Hell, when I was in college we had those Air Soft guns and we used to take target practice at the delivery guys. Poor guy is trying to bring us our large Tony's pizza and we were pelting him with little yellow bullets...

Oh no doubt, I'm not claiming I don't have similiar stories, although when you do such things for your entertainment, you have to be prepared to pay a price. I was simply saying that I think his price could be shocking due to the location.

Hoops star held in BB gun shooting

11:15 a.m.

Cleveland - City prosecutors will seek felony charges against Ohio State basketball recruit David Lighty who was arrested Wednesday after a jogger was shot with a BB gun.

Lighty, an 18-year-old All-Ohio guard from Villa Angela-St. Joseph, is being held on suspicion of assault, criminal trespassing and criminal activity on school property. Two other 18-year-old seniors from the team - Jimmy McCleod and Darryl Rushton - are being held on the same grounds.

They will likely be released this afternoon and prosecutors will take the case to a Cuyahoga County grand jury for charges.

The incident happened about 9 p.m. Wednesday at the school. James Nugent, 55, was jogging on the track when he was hit by a plastic BB. He heard the three men in the south bleachers laughing that they had hit him.

Nugent kept jogging because he was afraid to confront the men, according to a police report.

Two Cleveland patrolmen arrived and saw the three men with guns in the bleachers. It was dusk and the officers were unsure whether one of the guns was a BB gun or a real firearm. They pointed their guns at the three men and told them to drop the weapons.

Lighty and Rushton complied, but McCleod said he didn't have to drop his, police said. Officers said they shouted at him at least five times before he dropped the gun, which police then saw was a BB gun.

Cleveland classifies BB and pellet guns as firearms. It is against the law to have the weapons in public places.

Two of the guns were Stinger P30s made of black and clear plastic. They sell on the Internet for about $20.

Lighty, a three-time, first-team All-Ohio selection, signed a letter of intent to play at Ohio State in November. He averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists per game his senior year and was a two-time Plain Dealer Player of the Year.

Lighty, Rushton and McCleod helped the Vikings reach their first state tournament final four appearance in nine years this winter. VASJ reached the Division III state championship game, where it lost to Cincinnati North College Hill, 90-73.
