David Lighty of Villa Angela-St. Joseph drives to the basket and collides with defender Nathaniel Glover of North College Hill during the Division III State Championship
David Lighty of Villa Angela-St. Joseph gets tripped up by N. College Hill player O. J. Mayo.
David Lighty of Villa Angela-St. Joseph makes a shot over Nathaniel Glover of N. College Hill.
David Lighty dunks for two points during the first half.
I was thinking that Lighty could be a canidate for a redshirt b/c of his knee but after watching him and seeing that he is fully healthy and seeing how he plays, I think he will be a strong contributor to next years team.

Nicholson and May end prep careers with a bang at News-Herald Classic, pacing East team in win
The 29th annual News-Herald Classic boys basketball game was a big draw Saturday afternoon as a near capacity crowd packed the gym at Lakeland Community College.
The big crowd was treated to an array of big-time plays by the area's big-name senior players.
Two of the biggest names on the East team led their squad to - what else - a big victory.
North guard Clint Nicholson - named N-H Classic MVP - scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and nabbed three steals, and Holy Cross signee Adam May from Mentor added 23 points as the East ran away with a 121-105 victory.
"It's a great way to go out in my last game in this area," Nicholson said.
"Maybe if the game were a little closer, we could have even given the people more excitement, but it was a great overall experience."
In a game highlighted by 14 dunks, some nifty layups and a few picture-perfect alley-oop passes, Nicholson scored 14 first-half points to help the East jump out to a 58-50 lead at halftime, and Coach Bob Krizancic's team was never seriously threatened in the second half.
There was no shortage of high-flying action at Lakeland, and to nobody's real surprise, Villa Angela-St. Joseph star David Lighty did most of the skywalking.
The 6-foot-5 Ohio State signee led all scorers with 29 points for Coach Bob Patton Jr.'s West team, highlighted by six crowd-pleasing dunks. In his last game as a prep player in the Buckeye State, Lighty added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Lighty gave the East, and Nicholson, a lot of credit for winning the game.
"That team was playing some defense," Lighty said with a smile. "I was just having fun out there. It was a good time. Nicholson played very well, and it was nice going up against him."
The final 10 minutes of the second half, with the game pretty well in hand for the East, saw some of the game's most spectacular plays. Lake Catholic point guard Mike Staley picked the pocket of Euclid's Thaddeus Gibson near halfcourt and went in for a layup and a foul to give the East a 92-70 lead.
Geneva guard Nathan Luoma, who also won the 3-point shootout, got the East to the century mark with a whirling scoop layup in the lane.
Lighty had a pair of alley-oop slams in the second half, one he turned into a reverse dunk off a pass from Kenston's Tyler Brady, but the West trailed by double digits most of the second half and was unable to make a substantial run.
"This was a lot of fun. Those were 12 guys I would have liked to coach as a regular team," Krizancic said. "They hustled more than any all-star team I have ever had. It was a great group. To come together and have just one practice, then come out with an effort like this was great.
"I knew Clint could play, and he was outstanding today. And Adam is just a solid overall basketball player, so his day didn't really surprise me, but it is always nice to see your own guys do well. I had a lot of fun. It was a very good game and a great crowd."
All 12 players on the East scored, led by May and Nicholson. Harvey's Julian Mangano (11 points), Luoma (11 points) and Perry's Andy O'Keefe (10 points and 10 rebounds) also hit double figures for the East.
Gibson was the second-leading scorer on the West behind Lighty with 15.
VASJ forward Darryl Rushton and Chardon's Matt Kolcum tossed in 12 apiece, and Hilltoppers point guard Ryan Brody added 11 in a losing effort.
Lighty faces writer's cramp
Ohio State recruit has to sign plenty of autographs before and after Classic
Villa Angela-St. Joseph senior David Lighty is probably going to be sore today.
It's not his legs or his surgically-repaired right knee that will be the source of any discomfort, but his right shoulder, arm and hand should be aching from all the autographs he signed at the 29th annual News-Herald Classic.
The Ohio State signee signed programs and basketballs as soon as he walked into Lakeland's athletic center. He stopped in the middle of warmups to sign for kids that were lining the baseline. After the game, which his West team lost to the East, 121-105, Lighty spent over 30 minutes signing more autographs, taking pictures and shaking hands with complimentary fans.
"It's real exciting when the kids come out like this," Lighty said. "I just wanted to get the crowd excited with some dunks and bring a little excitement. Hopefully this is a glimpse of what I will be able to bring at Ohio State."
Lighty also made the day of 8-year old Ryan Cozzens of Bainbridge Township. Cozzens walked out of the gym with Lighty's gray No. 35 jersey from the game.
from what im reading, from all over a lot of people have lighty @100% higher than cook. whether its true or not, its hard to call a kid who is being heralded at the same player as a mcds aa as "underrated"bucknuts44820 said:I still think that Lighty is underrated and will make a big impact next year. He is a great shooter and that will get him some major minutes next year, I would like to see him add some weight, which I am sure he will before next season.
We should have at least a 10-man rotation, instead of the 7 we played last year.... and depending on how well Bell progresses, 11 guys could see time.
Butler, Conley, Lewis, Lighty, Cook, Mayes, Harris, Hunter, Oden and Terwilliger... plus Bell... will all get several meaningful minutes.
