19-year-old Nathan Ramon Wells last year saw a California police helicopter and decided to aim a laser pointer at it, causing the pilot to suddenly change course during a burglary investigation. Now he's going to federal prison for 15 months.

According to the Los Angeles Times, in June 2009 Wells was in his car in Cathedral City, California aiming the green laser pointer at the cops and, after diverting the crew from the investigation, the pilot spotted him. He was arrested when police found the laser pointer in his car. What an idiot. He could have at least thrown it out the window when he noticed the police helicopter tailing him. Or maybe he didn't notice the chopper tailing him or the patrol cars called in for backup. Either way, now he's going to federal prison for 15 months, and will be on supervised release for three years afterward. That's harsh, bro.

The punishment should fit the crime.

He should be placed in a water tank with sharks. And the sharks should have frickin' laser beams attached to their heads.

1 to 2 years per offense is pretty standard. The guy in Cleveland last year was sentenced to three years, which I suppose is a better sentence than the kid in Florida got after he was shot dead after pointing his laser pointer at officers, who mistook it for a laser dot-sight on a firearm.

Once you get the FAA involved, you're in a lot of trouble.

Laser pointers are banned in some countries. Won't be long before they're banned here too. People pointing them at aircraft is becoming too common today.

Simple solution: Cops should be prohibited from watching bad TV shows.

The funny part is that it's essentially harmless.

There could conceivably be a brief moment when a flash of light could distract a pilot during a critical phase on approach or take off...but the rest of the time (ie 99.9 ad nauseum %) it's just a dot of light thousands of feet away.

Exactly. Two years for a laser pointer, but they let advertisers put up gigantic sun-strength billboards two feet from the street.

Not entirely "harmless".

Class IIIa & lower lasers are for the most part. The natural tendency to look away or blink will protect the eye from any permanent damage due to their lack of power.

The only documented cases of them causing actual damage revolve around individuals staring directly into the beam for extended periods of time (as in 30 seconds or more).

Class IIIB (which the modified emitter in your video would fall into) or higher devices are required by law to have a key switch for operation (among other safety features).

Ironically the lasers that are most likely to cause eye damage would be those emitting in the UV band (<350nm) which aren't visible to the naked eye.

Of course the argument is that the potential for distraction could cause a pilot to lose all control & fly his plane straight into the ground. The validity of that scenario aside...is the distraction caused by a <5mw laser pointer greater than if you had a bright strobe or HID spotlight that inadvertently crossed the sight line of the pilot (or if you stick a hot naked chick on a roof top near the landing pattern)...and if not is the punishment the same in those cases?

You sure? They must punish these guys for a better reason than, "they shined a light in the pilots eyes and they shouldn't do that".

The fucking moron got what he deserved. Why? Because he's a fucking moron for what he did. For those he say the laser was harmless and would cause no effect, then what was this dipshit's intention if he thought there would be no effect?

Zero. Fucking. Sympathy.

Noboby wants to see a 737 full of people and a full load of jet fuel make a "hard landing" in a LA neighborhood.
Just sayin'.

Nobody? I bet you could find at least one.

I thought FrancisSoyer had won the prize for tortuous logic in this thread.

...holy shit was I wrong!
