SEC (It just means more.. even its losses are wins)

Just sayin': aTm just lost it's ticket to the SEC Championship Game and probably a Top 4 Seed in the CFPs.

SEC championship scenarios 2025

Three teams are still in the SEC championship game picture. A look at their paths to the conference championship game:

Georgia (11-1, 7-1)

- Georgia clinched a spot in the SEC Championship game when Texas A&M lost to Texas on Friday.

Alabama (9-2, 6-1)

- Alabama clinches a spot with a win against Auburn.

Ole Miss (11-1, 7-1)

- Ole Miss clinches a spot with an Auburn win over Alabama.
Go Auburn. A 3rd loss almost certainly eliminates Bama.

I think Ole Piss beats UGA the 2nd time around.

With what we've seen the last couple years, I believe we've learned a few things.

- the BCS wasn't all that terrible

- playoff expansion is unnecessary

- realignment into the super conferences was short-sighted and self-destructive

these three are the big ones from this.

someone on the radio yesterday made a really great point about how this has all shaken out looking at the playoff field this year.
(paraphrasing)
we don't need expansion for the playoffs, and actually just the opposite.
but this year will be the poster child for why it will expand farther

thanks to all the conference expansions, you have teams even from same conferences that have wildly different SoS this year and they don't play each other any more.
So you have 7-ish teams hoping to squeeze into the final 3 or 4 spots.

problem is that none of those 7 teams scream "no doubt about it playoff team, title contender"
but how do you let a couple in, but leave the rest out?

the correct answer is shrink playoffs and leave all of them out (or really go back down to 12 team conferences, every play 9 conf games, and a Conference CG).
unfortunately, the answer we will see is expand the playoff to allow all of them in.

Worst thing the BCS ever did was remove the influence of the computers because they didn't always agree with the humans.

16 with no byes and a first-round game at home would be great. I'd love to tune up a mid SEC team in the Shoe every December.
I have no hope of them doing what I think would make sense. The playoffs will never get smaller, there’s too much TV money.

But I would go to 14, with the 2 highest ranked CCG winners getting a first round bye. Because the CCGs should mean something, and right now they mean a lot less than they used to.

The Buckeyes and Indiana are about to face off in only the 3rd ever B1G matchup between #1 and #2. The first was Iowa over TTUN in 1985 and the other was The Game in 2006. But the loser in Indy this week will still be looking at getting a top-4 seed and a CFP bye. So yeah, a conference title is fine, but the playoffs are far more important.

But if the only 2 byes went to CCG winners, the Conference Championship Games would retain a great deal of importance.

I agree, there is no putting the genie back in the bottle. They will only expand more.

The BCS computer portion was a good thing

The super conference expansion wasn't the wrong move, it just looks like it because it's not done yet. There will be a blend of SEC/B1G/some other at some point. They have openly mentioned it already and there is no other logical place for this to go.

IIRC next year(or the year after but pretty sure it was 2026) the SEC and B1G take control of the CFP. Look for big changes coming after that.

the super conference expansion was absolutely the wrong move.
the B1G has 18 freaking teams now.
the SEC has 16 teams.

it was mathematically possible (before season started) to still have at least 4 undefeated teams from those 2 conferences AFTER the conference championship games are played.

that should NEVER be a possibility and if it is, you have too many teams.

The NFL division and playoff model makes sense at that point.

I personally hate the NFL when compared to college football, so fuck that!
