OT Henderson names four of five official visits

Monday, July 13, 2009

According to his father, ESPNU 150 Watch List offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) has pretty much come up with at least four of his official visits.

"I can give you about six to eight of the schools he is considering," Sean Henderson said. "You have to keep the Gophers in there in case he decides to stay home, but I'm not real sure where that stands. There is Minnesota, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Michigan, USC, I know Notre Dame's been on his list and Ohio State.

"I know his five official visits. He will definitely visit Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Florida. Florida State is one that could change. He might decide to visit somewhere else besides Florida State. He could visit both the Florida schools or he might just take one to Florida."

The 6-foot-7, 295-pounder has been in Georgia playing in the Peach Jam basketball tournament. Contacted during a break, he agreed with his father for the most part, but not quite 100 percent.

When asked about the four definite official visits, Seantrel said, "That might change, but right now that's it. Florida State might be the fifth one."

Seantrel Henderson, a starter at tackle since the beginning of his sophomore season, helped lead Cretin-Derham to 12 straight victories before a loss in the playoffs last season.

Dual-sport star Seantrel Henderson says several schools, including UCLA, Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida, have contacted him about playing both football and basketball.

By Jim Halley, USA TODAY
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. ? Seantrel Henderson is a basketball player trapped in a football player's body.
He's 6-6 and 335 pounds with a surprisingly low level of body fat. The difference between him and his fellow players in the Nike Peach Jam basketball tournament is striking ? his biceps are bigger than his opponents' calves. The center for the Howard Pulley Panthers draws double-teams down low and stares from opposing coaches. He would be a tremendous get for a college basketball program if the senior from Cretin-Derham Hall (St. Paul) weren't the top football recruit in the country.
"Basketball has always been my first love," says Henderson, the No. 1 overall recruit by Rivals.com and No. 1 offensive lineman by Scout.com and Rivals.com. "Doing football and basketball is not a problem in the summer. I work out for football in the morning and play basketball in the evening. Playing basketball keeps me in shape for football."
Henderson says several schools, including UCLA, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Florida State, North Carolina and Ohio State, have talked to him about playing both sports.
Despite his love for basketball, there's little doubt the Minneapolis native will eventually make a living as an offensive lineman in the NFL. He was the only junior last season on the first-team All-USA high school football team, and he's had 50 football scholarship offers.

In the Peach Jam, where most of the athletes are future Division I basketball players who weigh roughly half what Henderson does, he has struggled but also fit in. In his first game Sunday, he was saddled with four fouls and didn't score in his team's 88-58 loss to Florida's Team Stat. In a 64-57 defeat of Houston Hoops on Monday afternoon, he started off well with a couple of inside baskets. But after he was taken out, he never did find his rhythm. Later that night, however, in a 63-55 defeat of the Jackson (Miss.) Tigers, he scored 10 points, all in the second half, continually powering inside for reverse layups, smartly putting his ample body between himself and his defender to prevent being blocked.
"I know what I can and can't do on the court," Henderson says. "I can shoot a little bit, but my job is to stay around the basket. If I started to bring the ball upcourt, my teammates would come running to me to ask for the ball."

I know it's not Seantrel but it's his dad and Ohio State was the first name out of his mouth. That sounds a lot better than I had thought.

Once he sees it down here, we could have a real shot.

The story came from Bucknuts. They could have easily flipped Ohio State out in front of the list. Services do it all the time.

I don't know about that. I like to make fun of other school's fans who think they have a shot at kids they really don't. Let's not be that fan base.

I'd wait for something more substantial before I get excited.....but I am a stick in the mud :p

Seantrel names Florida, Southern Cal, and Ohio State as his three finalists, because each team plays for championships and sends many players to the NFL. Distance (obviously) will not be a factor.

Don't be surprised if Henderson's finalists change over time ... but still a very positive update for Buckeye fans

I'd bet all my vCash that this list changes at least once, to include at least minny... local pressure will get to him.
Can't be a bad sign that we're this high this early though! Great news.

He's Michigan bound. And they have "big-time" insiders that are good friends with Henderson & his family....

Henderson knows Michigan is a train-wreck, why would he go there?
