Seahawks (ex-USC) Coach Pete Carroll (official thread)

USC Head Coach Pete Carroll (official thread)

According to a source Carrol was interviewed for the vacancy as the Miami Dolphins Head Coach while on vacation in Costa Rica.

[FONT=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica] The ill-fated reign of Nick Saban apparently hasn't discouraged the Dolphins from entertaining the possibility of hiring another high-profile college coach.

The Dolphins are believed to have met with Southern California coach Pete Carroll on Sunday in Costa Rica, a source said. A plane registered to Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga that was used for the team's previous coaching interviews arrived Sunday in Costa Rica before returning to Fort Lauderdale on Sunday night. Carroll was vacationing in Costa Rica on Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

No NFL contract would be worth leaving the gig he has now at USC...
Exactly. You're running the biggest draw in a town with no pro football teams, unlimited resources and can recruit pretty damn near whoever you want. Probably the #1 coaching gig in all of NCAA football. Going back to the pros means having to deal with millionaire primadonnas and unrealistic expectations. Also, the Dolphins are in a pretty shitty way right now. An uncertain QB situation and an aging defense. They will probably get a lot worse before getting better IMO. I think a lot of college coaches in top programs will take a look at what happened to Saban and stay put when offered pro jobs.

merged sandgk's post about Carroll interviewing for the Dolphins job with this thread...let's try and use the established threads rather than randomly generating new ones like the ones about what you would change about your spouse or what your spouse would change about you.

I agree, but maybe he is just trying to get some "leverage" to renegociate his USC contract to over $5 million per year. After all since Saban is getting around $4 million per year Petey probably considers his $3 million per year (for 4 more years) contract as being in the "poor house".

Carroll agrees to contract extension with USC, this was Dec 2005:
According to the Los Angeles Daily News, the contract is for five years and is initially worth around $3 million a season, an upgrade from the $2.25 million he made this season.

Since Saban is getting well over 4 million per year:
Saban, 55, met with Alabama athletic director Mal Moore on Monday in Miami. Saban was offered a contract that has a total value of $35 million to $40 million and would make him college football's highest-paid coach, ESPN said. The length of the contract is eight to 10 years, the network said

I believe I agree with the posters who think Petey is using Miami as leverage. He was only a couple games better than .500 in the pros, and as Mili, Steve19, etc. have already adroitly pointed out, he's got a pretty good gig in La-La land. USC is riding high (and maybe that IS the time to go), and by the looks of the 5*'s he is continually bringing in (and the weak West), he can continue to collect his $2.5-3 million every year he chooses.

He sells the program well, every alum I've spoken to (I see alot here in Cali) all think he walks on water. Heck, he could probably take the USC roster with him and win more games than the Dolphins did last year......

At a certain age, wisdom takes over from ego, and the 'why the heck would I want to subject myself to that' takes over. He stays put.

PS, NCAA rules don't prohibit the coach from getting free use of a personal jet from a booster, do they? I'm pretty sure that's an unwritten perk of Petey. No lines in airports.

The RB depth issue is resolving itself a bit...

USC sports information officials have confirmed that Trojan sophomore running back Michael Coleman (6-1, 230) has requested a release from his scholarship so that he may transfer to another school.

Coleman, who came to USC after a star career as a quarterback at Arroyo Valley HS, saw limited action as a true freshman tailback before off-season hip surgery. When Coleman came back in time for fall camp in 2006 he was immediately moved to fullback but his hip didn't respond properly and he missed the entire 2006 and the recent 2007 spring ball session.

When healthy as a freshman, Coleman showed promise as a hard running big back even though he was learning a new position. We wish him luck both on and off the field at his future school of choice.

1. ACCEPTING HIS LOAN OF A SHIRT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

Pete Carroll, head coach of the football team at the University of Southern California, turns to me one night around 8 p.m. and says he?s got something to do, somewhere he needs to be. We?re standing outside his office at Heritage Hall, the redbrick headquarters of USC?s athletic program, the trophy-filled heart of Troy . I ask Carroll where he?s going, what he?s doing. He doesn?t answer.

I ask if I can come along. No, he says, absolutely not. I ask again. Sorry, he says. I stare imploringly. OK, he says, looking me up and down?but you?d better change. He rummages through a small wardrobe in the corner of his office and finds a white polo, which he flips to me like a screen pass.
