Scout Network....down again.

lol, so apparently for whatever reason Scout didn't renew NevadaBuck's contract so there is now a mass exodus from the site

reallly funny to read
ElevenWarriors has it all over Scout. Nevada's insider stuff was all they really had to set them apart. I like Bill Greene, but he rarely provides anything you can't find on the free sites, here included.

Premium networks need to rethink their business model in the era of Twitter. It's not helped by Urban's open-door "for the students" custodian policy around the WHAC, or the fact that all the recruiting info breaks at open camps like FNL and The Opening.

It's hard to imagine what they are thinking by letting Nevadabuck go. Perhaps that it's not worth keeping him since his info is shared on non-premium channels immediately?

Still, it seems like he will bring quite a few eyes to wherever he goes next.

I read speculation regarding a shift in focus to video based content and the accompanying ad revenue those views will generate. This makes sense but it seems like a losing battle given how inept Scout has been technology wise and the intense competition (and free content) in that area.

If you could make a perfect Ohio State website, I'd take the people from BP, the hardware and technology from 247, and the no longer existent "insiders" from Scout.

highly entertaining reading all the people posting about how they called to cancel, and the rep on the line sighing once he figures out they're from the Ohio State board

It will be interesting to see if they crash and burn over this. I still remember canceling with TWC over BTN back in the day. It gives you a nice sense of satisfaction when a group of people are able to punish bad corporate decisions with their wallets.

BSB/Scout still has the best team of beat reporters in the business, they provide better coverage of the football team than any other outlet and they also cover other sports like women's basketball that other sites don't care about. They, along with the Plain Dealer / Cleveland.com do the best Ohio State athletics journalism out there, without the muckraking of the Dispatch.

I like 11W. Their film room stuff is great. They only dabble in news though. A good bit of what they report is still second-hand though, and much of their primary content is clickbati, snark, hype or re-packaged info. They're good at it and I enjoy reading it, but when I want news Scout is the place I look to.

I honestly couldn't care less about the Nevadabuck thing. I forgot he was still out there.

To be crystal clear, I have zero insight into the decision making process nor inside information.

The simplest thing would be to bring Bill back and encourage him to resume part of his old role. I doubt they do that, so if it were me, I'd hire Birm as my lead analyst and Teddy as a board mod and aggregator.

- The "but we get better stuff from 11w" would end completely. The other guys do a great job there but it's Birm that takes it from 'nice blog' to 'gold mine' of Buckeye info.

- Birm is a good journalist that would be a worthy hire for the BSB paper.

- Birm is a good insider with rumblings and nuggets that are certainly on par with the volume that Nevada has handed out in the last year or so.

- He's also a much more agreeable personality for the board.

Nevada has had great intel for many years but should have never been left in the position to moderate, let alone be the entire "admin" level of moderation over there. It led to a ton of disagreements and bans which would have been better handled by a third party. We do the same thing here when we can, reaching out to other mods that aren't emotionally invested and have them provide feedback or assign the infractions.

This is on Scout. They're trying to dump expenses onto local websites and that money doesn't just magically appear. "But you'll lose even more" is a fun argument that still doesn't invent money.

I have no idea what Nevada wanted but I imagine it wasn't cheap, especially after openly posturing and leveraging his exit a half year before the contract ended. He certainly is worth a big premium but this was a no win situation, especially once the standoff was taken public to maximize transfers and the bonuses tied to that.

I agree that is very backwards but it seems to be how they are approaching a lot of things.

I agree with all of this (including how enjoyable it is to me as a reader).

The clickbait thing is fascinating though. People LOVE it, and don't care if they've read the same quotes and DB competition breakdown article 2-4 times before that offseason. It's what they're interested in and it sparks an open dialogue, so people eat it up.

BSB started doing some similar stuff (not as much clickbait as rehashing info daily), and they got a lot more discussions than actual articles.

Even Bill does this sometimes when breaking down different positions in an article. I think Bill's the best in the business and his combo of intel and analysis is stellar, but sometimes he'll break down a unit with insight that was largely available in his winter breakdown. But because of the source and how it's packaged, people eat it up.

I think that is the real thing to analyze as a media outlet. Not whether or not you could or should hire Nevada, which was never going to work out, but looking at how people digest information these days.

I think what you touched on in the beginning is why I find it ridiculous to pay for a message board for just writers. Sure they're good at, but when you can get some of the info for free, it's nowhere close to worth $10/mo

With the new ownership at The Dispatch, I'm curious if they will realize what a cash cow Ohio State football can be for them.

Previously, The Dispatch seemed to thrive in times of turmoil. They seemingly put more energy and resources into digging up additional dirt to pile on during TatGate than they ever did before or since covering the team.

I'm wondering if they'll ever realize the traffic they can achieve simply by hiring a guy to sit at camp and post which players "look good" on Twitter and then copying and pasting said tweets in bullet point form in an article later.

To that end, hiring a guy like Birm would seemingly be an incredibly simple way to significantly boost their online presence. On the other hand, Internet money doesn't magically appear and it's a problem I'm glad I don't have to deal with.

This is generally why I stopped blogging.

There are only so many different ways to say the same exact things over and over again (game previews become particularly tedious: run the ball, no turnovers, limit their playmakers and big plays, win the field position battle and the trenches and so on...).

It becomes extra frustrating when 20 other people are saying the same things as well.

Trying to find something original to write about which hasn't already been covered is next to impossible and exhausting.

We've basically come to that point with recruiting coverage as well- or at least I have.

It's turned into a total waste of time following the day to day recruiting "news" other than to be vaguely aware of who's on the board at each position.

Pryts, Hamlin and Fuller at DB. Craig-Myers and Victor at WR. Gary, Lawrence, Jackson at DT.

Got it.

I don't need to see meaningless "updates" on these kids every day of the week that say pretty much nothing.

I feel bad for Birm in that regard- it has to be next to impossible to keep up that pace without just regurgitating the same and meaningless info constantly and even then it must be tedious as hell.

But from experience, daily updates is the only way to get people to consistently visit your site.

Bottom line, I got sick of it and stopped writing because of this stuff and I'm VERY happy I don't have to try and make internet money off of it.

the problem is the BSB regulars really aren't doing much. I mean the michigan site sent sam webb to the opening, where michigan really doesn't have much of a presence, whereas BSB has zero coverage out there and half of osu's class is competing, with several big time recruits with osu interest also attending. i've cancelled over there as well and won't miss it one bit. if BSB had anything really worth having, i'd be glad to give them the benefit of the doubt for a while.
