Game Thread San Diego State Aztecs at tOSU, Sep 7, 3:30 ET, ABC/ESPN2

Looks like one of those games where no matter what the Buckeyes do it won't be "enough" for some fans. I'm guessing SDSU doesn't play as poorly as they did last week, but if the Bucks execute it should not be close. Still, if you're expecting 99-3 you may be setting yourself up for disappointment.

Exactly.

A team is never as bad as they look when a game goes against them like that or as good as they look when it goes their way. I expect a better effort from SDSU to go along with a text book letdown spot for this young OSU team as they come down off the emotional high of opening day and look forward to Cal.

That said, it's still a glorified scrimmage, lackadaisical or not OSU will roll.

Any word on whether or not it will be seen on ABC or ESPN2?

They list both, meaning that it will likely be on ABC in most of the Midwest. This should be the 'reverse mirror' concept, where the broadcast maps come out in a couple of days showing which regions of the country will get the game on ABC and which will get it on ESPN2.

See that's what I think too. Too many times I've thought we'll burry a team out of frustration and somehow the opposing team once again plays way over their heads and keeps it respectable. Will we win? Yes. Will we crush them by 35? Maybe. Will sdsu play better? I believe so. I just think this defense has too many growing pains for us to crush them and I feel like all these quarter long luls we experience are too much of a trend as well. We win 42-17 or something of the like imo and yet again we will be here debating why we can't put it all together for a total game

This team is still working out the bugs and while I want to think Miller & the offense will play a complete game and blow SDSU away, I think this will be closer than many expect/wish. 38-17 sounds about right. Until the offense can focus and be consistent instead of using 1 quarter bursts to put away teams, the OOC games are going to be closer than expected prior to the season.

It's the "bounce back factor". You see it over and over, again.
I wonder if we're seeing a team pattern from Urban's Buckeyes. The coaches play a lot of freshman, who make freshman mistakes and make for sloppy over-all play. Big Ten starts and things start settling down. Kids have been coached up and the number of reps players get is determined. We tend to get too excited about bad plays or the other team looking good when it's all by design. Remember how Tress liked to "stress" his teams to "create" mental toughness? We could be seeing Urban's version of that.

I honestly cant remember a game where I felt our offense looked unstoppable and our defense looked stout in the same game. What I notice as a pattern is our defense plays passive regardless that urban wants the opposite, we take too many personal fouls, our offense falls into major quarter long dry spells giving teams hope as well as our play calling changing radically conservative and we continue to feel the next game we will blow up like we all expect. However we keep winning inspite of many things still needing fixed

What troubles me most is meyer was quoted saying he wants to press and play man with blitzing and to take it to offenses even going as far as saying no more bend and don't break. Yet over the last year it seems our defensive staff is sort of fighting that mentality. Does anyone else sense a difference in style between what our head coach wants and what in reality our defensive staff does?

Last year the defensive coaching staff was definitely disjointed and not on the same page- especially early in the year, obviously.

Last week, the defense played well overall with two turnovers and scores changing the overall perception of a well played game.

While this is Ohio State and we do expect starters to be replaced with ease, for well over half the game Christian Bryant was the only player on the field with any starting experience at all.

I expect the defensive line to get significantly better as the year goes on, I was impressed with Curtis Grant and expect him to build on his solid performance, and I expect the return of Roby to have a significant impact on the overall performance of the unit.

Would I be comfortable if the defense we saw last week was taking the field in January? Not at all.

Fortunately, there are many weeks in between for improvement.

The complete 180 fan pessimism has taken from offense to defense is interesting, but I guess it's understandable.

I hate to sound like Taos with an open ended question, but is Fickell the new Bollman?

You know, if you ever had any shadow of a doubt that the powers that be at ESPiN truly hate tOSU fan base, all you have to do is turn on the game only to find . . . Beth Mowins doing the game. Torture man, pure and complete torture.
