San Diego State at BYU

No FGs in the last 8-1/2 minutes for SDSU. BYU has been physical on the defensive end and SDSU can't handle it. (EDIT: That announcer couldn't have been right about that - I remember a 3-pointer in there somewhere.)

60-52, 4:00 left.

The angels told Joseph Smith that Fredette would slay the Mighty Aztecs.

Smith spread the news throughout the land.

In the year 2010 all that he foretold would come true and the people rejoiced.

He looks like a skilled player (not NBA-skilled, mind you, but pretty good for college) but not as good as the recent mania would suggest.

Bingo. He's got a nice game and all, but the ESPN hype for this guy is ridiculous. FWIW, I'd be surprised if either team makes it to the Sweet Sixteen.

re: Fredette - Having successfully avoided ESPN for the most part, I'm not sure what people have been saying about him there. I'm just glad he doesn't play for Dook or UNC. The hype would be unbearable - Tebow-esque even. To me the most obvious comparison would be Wally Szczerbiak - high scoring, infinite range, both white guys from NY who went to lesser-known basketball schools and generally account for about half of their team's offensive output by themselves. He doesn't have Wally's height or length though, and he passes about as much as Allen Iverson. He does have one NBA skill though: whining about calls. He was treated rather gingerly by the refs last night, yet he still found occasions to throw his arms up in the air to complain. I wouldn't be afraid to see him play the Buckeyes - I think a combo of Craft & Lighty could keep him in check as long as the refs in any such game don't protect him.

re: The teams - I kind of agree about the relative strength of the two teams. Both teams have rather weak schedules - BYU a little less so. I'm not going to pretend that if both continue down their current path they won't end up as protected seeds - but I don't see either as being among the real top 16 teams in the country. I suppose of the two, I could see BYU breaking in to the Sweet Sixteen with the right matchups simply because one man can carry a team at least that far.
