Saints 62, Colts 7, 4th

There's a middle ground here. Peyton's not young, and they've had some laughably bad backups over the years.
Maybe, but look what happened to OSU dominating Nebraska when Bauserman replaced Braxton.

Fair point. I should have noted the Colts have no excuse for not even developing a backup, let alone a replacement. Agreed.

With regards to the OSU/Neb comparison, I see what you mean, but I also don't put that loss on the QB. The defense decided to stop tackling all on their own, Braxton wouldn't have been out there (Duh ).

I know its a simplistic point about a complex situation, but I was more frustrated that the coaches/leaders didn't keep the defense together after Braxton went out.

And remember, the Colts were not a great team last year. 10-6, lost in the first round (again) and really struggled much of the year. So, while it seems to be a precipitous drop, they really weren't that great last season, and they have let 4 wins slip away this season. (Cle, KC, Pit, Tampa) If they hold on, they are 4-3 (again, duh )

Difference is, Peyton went out and got those W's in the past. Now they have no leader offensively, no one to get the job done.

terrible?

63% comp, 4,000+ yds passing, 28 TDs

I'm more thinking the 6-10 record, wasn't able to win.

Hell, Shaun Hill threw for over 2,600 with 16 TD's on 60%+ completions playing 3/4 of the season for a 6-10 Lions team last year IIRC.

But, I should have made it clear I meant the season was terrible in terms of W/L, not his stats.

Well considering that was the point I was making, your attack on my post was pretty much pointless.

Right, the Colts should have planned for freak neck problems to all of the sudden plague their QB who has never missed a game.

Right, like their crystal ball told them he'd never get a knee injury or get busted up ribs from a blind side hit. People get fucked up bad in the NFL, and if you don't plan on having a competent backup for the mother-of-all franchise QBs, then you deserve all the 62-7 ape-fuckings that come your way.

I don't have a problem with the Colts, but they deserve this mess. Your entire franchise can't rest on one player like this. This team is a disaster on defense and that has nothing to do with Manning. They're a disaster on offense without him. I'd be pissed if I were an Indy fan. They don't even have a backup who can step in and play decent. They need to start building fast, because Manning's retirement is coming quickly. It might not be at the doorstep yet, but you can see it from the window.

It's insane. Look at other teams that lost superstars to injury in any sport. I'm going to use the Penguins as an example. They are playing without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But they've worked to put enough talent on that roster to still be a good team without them. Those are the teams that win titles. It's why the Patriots have been good for so long, and why Cassell just stepped in and looked fine.

EDIT: And I know the Colts won a title, but they actually had a good team around Manning when they did it. That would've been a solid/good team without Manning if they had a serviceable backup.

How many NFL teams have quality, or even serviceable, backups?

C'mon...the Colts should have done something a little better, but there was simply NO backup plan for losing Manning.

There's no contingency plan that could have helped them once Manning wasn't taking the snaps. Maybe a plan that keeps them at 3-4 wins, but who cares at that point.

I'd say most have players that at least deserve a roster spot.

The entire team sucks. The team was Manning. They should've done everything around him better.

I believe 6 teams started new/backup quarterbacks this week in the NFL. They went 1-5 (Tebow).

But I do agree, they let Manning mask their problems for too long.

His ability to sustain drives kept the shitty D off the field more than what they are now.

They'd been having some close games before tonight, though. Saints just jumped on them and took their heart out tonight.

Fuck the Colts, everyone in Indianapolis has been spoiled for way too long, and they have never made any contingency plans for when he wasn't there. As much as SF was made out to be a heel when they let Montana go, they did so for a reason (S Young). The Packers had Rodgers after they let Favre go. Great organizations plan for shit like this. Not the Colts.

Sorry, I assumed you meant "heir apparent" since you used Rodgers/Steve Young as examples.

I do agree, Indy should have developed the backups more.

Honestly, Polian/Irsay/Caldwell and Co. never thought this would happen. Hell, Dungy tonight said the thought never crossed his mind that #18 would miss a game.

Not saying it's rational, or that I think it's ok. But, it is pretty widely accepted here in Indy that they never thought this would happen.

Their plan is in Palo Alto right now. I'd say they're the lead horse in this race. Miami and St. Louis are bad, but Indy is [censored]ing terrible. I'd lay even odds on them going 0-16 this season.

Yeah that's him.
Thought so. So, their "backup" couldn't even hold down his starting job in college. Brilliant.

Manning goes down for a year and they're probably going to get Andrew Luck because of it. Unbelievable.
There's a conspiracy. Peyton's neck is fine, he's just a great "team guy". :tinfoil:

It's just the perfect storm for a rapid fall in Indy...the franchise QB is getting old, so is the OL, Reggie Wayne & Dallas Clark are getting on in years so they're gonna need help there, they have no legit RBs, the defense has a lot of aging guys and is pretty bad. Peyton was good enough to cover up most of this, but who knows what he has left if/when he comes back. They're gonna be a mess for a while. Really, you look at that franchise, they have underachieved horribly. They had one of the best players to ever play the game for 13 years, had pretty good talent around him for most of it, and could only manage one title.
