Let's not judge Tressel harshly based solely on the quotes in Dodd's article.

There's a good chance that the quotes were in response to questions that Dodd framed in order to have the article read like tOSU fans have their priorities screwed up.

Here's an idea - let's give everyone a reason to think differently. Let's show the team and those watching on TV and the web that tOSU fans know what's important.

When the teams take the field at the start of the third quarter on Saturday, let's get everybody in the stands to chant 'Tyson..Tyson..Tyson'. Spread the word.

Of course, and most of them do it, as tibs said, to get a rise out of those very same people, thus "proving their point" to themselves. What they miss obviously is that those people aren't representative of the true Buckeye alumni and fans who want what's best for the game AND the kids. But, the sportswriters love sinking into the muck with the worst of messed up people...and then writing about it. It's just the way it goes.

I don't think it's really a harsh judgement, I just didn't like the blanket he seemed to toss over the fan base with that particular comment. It could be that the answer was what the guy was looking for, and that's fine. Perhaps he could have said that Tyson was also getting a bunch of cards and e-mails from Buckeye fans, and whatever, but hey, it was one quote...nothing to hang him over. I think some people's point is though that everyone wants to rip Dodd for being a turtle's dick, but that coach Tressel said something to the same effect as Dodd in this particular case.

BL, my statement about the "judging harshly" wasn't directed at you.

But perhaps JT did mention something about fans showing support for Gentry, and Dodd didn't include it because it didn't fit into the tone of his article. Like you said, it's just one quote, and it may have been taken out of context. Notice the "..." prior to the phrase "wonder about the psyche of today's person."

I think JT was speaking out of concern for his injured player and the frustration came through. The injury and the jerseys are obviously two different events separated by some significant time frame. The way the article presented these two events was meant to stimulate controversy. I would wonder what the email ratio is right now and how many folks have sent heartfelt wishes to Tyson and his family for his speedy recovery. The follow up never gets reported.

The one thing that caught my eye was the company that sent the helmet. I would make sure they never did any business with tOSU from now until the end of time. Trying to capitalize on an injury in this manner shows a complete lack of class and compassion.

I can read. I had a problem with the article's lack of an accurate time line.

As far as Tressel goes, he has to be absolutely crestfallen over what has happened. Who wouldn't be?

I believe you to be completely correct. Tressel really views all those kids as his own and when something like this happens, it has quite an impact. He really is an honorable man. Quite possibly the point Tressel was trying to make, since Tyson's injury is, quit sending me e-mails about the new jersey, he couldn't care less. Focus on what is really important now, a downed kid of mine as well as a Buckeye.

While Im really fond of the colors scarlet and gray I couldn't care less if our team trodded out on the field in turquiose and chartruse.. being a buckeye is outwardly represented by the scarlet and gray but being a true buckeye is something only found within.. the common ties that bind us especially when something this unfortunate happens...

I think it's a well written article that puts things into perspective a bit. He was using the OSU situation as an example, this would be evident anywhere else in the country with such a passionate fanbase. OSU fan's haven't made the best example of themselves over the whole "jerseygate" fiasco.

And 3 pages into this thread here we go again with some taking this as a shot at OSU, and the fans. Maybe we should look inward and see how we've reacted to each bit of news. Sometimes I get upset with some of the fans because they always think that someone is taking shots against their school. OSU fans are probably some of the most passionate when it comes to this. So, Dodd used OSU as an example.......big fucking deal. Tressel hit it right on the head when he put it into perspective about how the email reaction was for each situation.

Sadly, I think that some fans didn't take this as serious as they would have provided that it was a starter who was injured. This board would have went beserk, in the fashion of the MoC. debacle.........if it was someone who was slated to start in the fall.

I wish Tyson the best, and I wish his family the best during these hard times. And I wish that some Buckeye fans would stop their conspiracy theories that every article written about OSU is out of spite.

We need to stop acting like this is something unique to OSU or even college football. It's life. It's the way it always been. People who are famous will get more attention than those who are not. Things that are not important will get more attention than things that are not.
Heck, if Tyson was an OSU student and not even on the football team, would anybody on this site care? If Tyson was "Ted Ginn", would people care more? Of course they would. There is nothing "wrong" with that. That's the way life works.
