COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ron Tanner enjoys contact, whether he is being hit or doing the hitting.
The senior plays both quarterback and defensive back at Columbus' Eastmoor Academy. He'll take his talents to Ohio State ? No. 2 in the Top 25 preseason poll.
"I have mixed feelings," said Tanner, who is on The Associated Press East Region 25 list of top recruits. "If it was up to me I'd rather hit. I love to hit. That's the exciting part of playing defense. As a quarterback, having the ball in your hands every play is also great as well. I like both."
Tanner (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) earned a reputation as a fierce hitter last season with more than 80 tackles and three interceptions for the Warriors (8-3), but that's not his off-field image.
"He's an outstanding young man and a role model for our students," Eastmoor athletic director Anthony Brown said. Tanner will be the second player from Columbus' City League to commit to the Buckeyes in as many years. Incoming OSU freshman Verlon Reed attended Marion Franklin.
"Ohio State gets a lot of guys from Ohio and Central Ohio but not necessarily the City League," Tanner said. "It will be good for us to make a stand and show that the City League can step up and make some plays at Ohio State as well."
There's also tradition that Tanner is trying to honor: Eastmoor produced Ohio State's two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin.
"Mr. Griffin, his name speaks for itself," Tanner said. "He's a great man that gives back to the community. He's a great all-around man, not just a great football player."
Tanner chose Ohio State over Arizona State, Michigan State, Northwestern and Stanford. During his commitment announcement he jokingly put on a Michigan cap before revealing his choice.
"It's the hometown school I've always loved," he said. "It's an excellent program as far as football and academics. It's kind of hard to beat."
Tanner said the OSU coaches see him as a safety.
"I know I'll be battling for playing time," he said.
The defense pestered Eastmoor Academy quarterback Ronald Tanner, an Ohio State recruit, all over the field. Tanner was thrown for losses five times and completed 10 of 32 passes.
"Our defensive coordinator, Mike Malloy, did a great job of putting together a plan," Pharion said. "We call it the money package. We had our ends contain (Tanner) on the rush, and the linebackers covered underneath."
Eastmoor Academy was stopped on downs three times inside the St. Charles 35-yard line.
The only time the Warriors clicked came when Tanner led an 11-play drive that cut the deficit to 14-6. He scrambled 6 yards to the 1 on fourth down for a first down and sneaked for the touchdown on the next play.
"We practiced nasty all week," St. Charles defensive lineman Joe O'Brien said. "Tanner is great and he's going to Ohio State, and we knew we had to contain him. We brought it to them."
The Warriors scored on a 12-yard pass from Ronald Tanner to Jalen Crosby with 59.3 seconds left in the second quarter and a 10-yard run by Frierson with 9:30 left in the third to take a 21-7 lead.
"We knew they'd come out fired up, especially after last year," Tanner said, referring to a last-minute 14-10 Eastmoor victory.
Columbus Eastmoor defeated Columbus Walnut Ridge 21-20 on Friday. Ron Tanner made 13 tackles. He had 65 yards rushing and 150 yards passing with a 12-yard touchdown pass.
Marion-Franklin would strike first on a 6-yard touchdown run by Chad Jones. Eastmoor would answer quickly when Ron Tanner found Derik Rudolph on a 23-yard pass to take a 7-6 lead.
Tanner would connect with Devon Edwards on a 23-yard touchdown pass late in the game, but it would be too little too late as the onside kicked failed sealing the victory for the Devils.
Tanner threw for 211 yards as Eastmoor will have to win out to keep its playoff chances alive.
