S Lathan Ransom (All B1G, All-American)

Knowles said Tuesday, however, that it remains undetermined how much Ohio State will actually use three-linebacker formations, in part because he believes safeties like Kourt Williams and Lathan Ransom are also capable of playing like linebackers in the box.

“We've been using it some,” Knowles said. “But we've also been experimenting with some things with Kourt and Lathan and a couple of safeties that may be able to get the job done without bringing in another linebacker. So there's development at the safety position that may not make that quite as urgent.”

In the second quarter of the Buckeyes’ Rose Bowl win over Utah, Lathan Ransom snapped his leg during kickoff coverage in a sequence that threatened to jeopardize the start of his junior season – if not more.

Ransom has had far less time to rehab his own broken leg, but the third-year safety is back making plays in practice nonetheless. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is impressed with the short duration of time in which Ransom needed to return to the field, although Day said Thursday that the Buckeyes are still monitoring his health during the preseason.

“He's had a very good summer, he's showed out, for sure. And yeah, it says a lot about Lathan's ability to recover and the work he put in with (physical therapist Adam Stewart) and (athletic trainer) Shaun Barnhouse and everybody in the training room,” Day said. “It's good to see him. We're certainly keeping an eye on it. Every day we kind of have a watchlist of guys that we keep a close eye on, make sure that they're good, but he's been able to handle it and that says a lot about him.”

“Lathan has been playing all three of our safety positions. We're really trying to find a way to get him involved, along with Kourt,” Knowles said. “Kourt is a guy who is really doing well, and we're trying to find ways to get him involved. So you may see some packaging with different safeties in the game because of the way I feel like Lathan and Kourt are coming along. Particularly in the run game, you can see some packaging with those guys because they can play.”

S LATHAN RANSOM
When Lathan Ransom suffered a leg fracture in the final game of the 2021 season, his status for the start of his junior year was immediately called into question. But the Arizona native made an expeditious recovery over the offseason to provide some much-needed depth to the Ohio State safety room.

Exactly where Ransom will spend most of his snaps is still to be determined, as Knowles said he’s played all three safety positions since coming back from injury this fall. But Knowles seemed certain that Ransom will make a difference for the Buckeye secondary in whatever role he’s given. Ransom played second-string free safety for Ohio State in its open practice back on April 11, and Knowles said the combination of him and Kourt Williams could negate the need for a Sam linebacker to be employed this season.

“He's had an exceptional camp,” Knowles said Monday. “He just stands out on the field in how he operates. He plays at a fast tempo. He's usually never wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, but he’s usually never wrong. In any case, he's aggressive.”

Ransom has also impressed his returning teammates with the improvement he’s shown this month.

“Lathan has had one of the best camps I've seen since I've been in this program,” said fellow safety Ronnie Hickman. “He came back and fought back from his injury, and he's just been balling out now.”

As Ransom rehabilitated from his injury this offseason, he had doubts at times about whether he would be ready for preseason camp. He described the injury as “the most traumatizing, worst thing that's happened to me,” and he acknowledges there were low points as he worked his way back, particularly during spring practices when he had to watch from the sidelines.

“That was the hardest part on me,” Ransom said. “I wanted to just be out there with my teammates. I wanted to be out there with my brothers. I wanted to learn the new defense. So at first, I was really down.”

dude was in Mayers jock all over the field Saturday. Tough freaking assignment and the secondary executed very well except for about 2 plays and one of those was a half second of positioning off on the first play of the game.

Sometimes I am off on recruiting, but I always saw Lathan's highlights and thought he would be special. Part of that is how hard he works, but his coverage and tackling ability are incredible. I would imagine our safeties will take turns with big performances (Proctor, McCallister, Hickman, Ransom, Kourt, Martinez...list goes on), but Ransom may turn out being the star of our defensive backfield before the end of the year.

Seven games into the year, Ransom has established himself as one of the best safeties in college football. Ransom currently has the highest Pro Football Focus grade (88.2) among all Power 5 safeties this season and was named earlier this week as one of only 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors college football’s best defensive backs.

In Ohio State’s last two games specifically, Ransom’s playmaking ability has been on full display as he made his first career interception against Michigan State and then both forced and recovered a fumble while tying his career-high with eight tackles against Iowa.
