S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

I disagree. I think Goodell is aware of the recent criticism, and its clear that Coleman did not lead w/ helmet. They'll probably issue a statement that the penalty was correct, but that the hit was inadvertant - thus, no fine.

I'm sorry to see Collie get hurt on this hit, but this seems like a bad call to me. Coleman didn't launch himself, nor did he lead with his helmet. And Collie did not seem defenseless...I mean he caught the ball and was still on his feet when Coleman came in with a hard shoulder to try to dislodge the ball. I just don't get that call of unnecessary roughness. He was hitting a player with the ball while he was still upright.

It will be interesting to see what the league says about this one.

Seems like any big hits are automatically getting flags these days.

Apparently the AP is the judge and jury. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap...OMjpyw?docId=61134517c9184ed9bf22c9279675be45
The depleted Colts lost wide receiver Austin Collie to a concussion after a hard ? illegal ? hit by Kurt Coleman forced him to leave on a stretcher in the second quarter.

I don't get it either. Those hits looked clean. What is the definition of a defenseless receiver? If a receiver stretches out for a ball is he defenseless? If he puts his arms up is he defenseless?

All the guys on the half time show said it was a bad call and that the league shouldn't fine him... I only saw the hit on the replay... sure didn't look like much but I hope Austin Collie is ok.

collie got knocked into coleman creating the helmet to helmet contact. i still think coleman was trying to tackle too high on collie but otoh looking at it again, if coleman had gone lower collie would've gotten it even worse because the dude was already ducking before he got hit. just a bam bam play that i dont think was anyone's fault, coleman slowed up and tried to use his shoulder to jar the ball loose from collie and collie ended up getting knocked into kurt's helmet.

Not a very objective look at the hit and the writer places all the blame on Coleman multiple times in the article.

In my opinion, the hit was a matter of circumstance. Collie caught the ball and lowered his head and Coleman in an attempt to lower his shoulder and deliver a blow accidentally made helmet to helmet contact. It was a bad circumstance for both players. Unfortunately Collie was hurt.

"The fact of the matter is that the ball was incomplete," Cheffers said. "So he has protection throughout that entire process on that play because we don't have a completion. At no time did he have possession and become a runner to where he would have transitioned out of being a defenseless receiver."
It's unbelievable how refs just choose to see what they want to see. He clearly had possession.

This is an issue that goes beyond this play. They do this in replays all the time. :shake:

Man up and admit the blown call.

Bil Cower basically said that Kurt shouldn't be coached to play any differently. I understand the concern for head injuries and I think they should do everything within reason to avoid them but it's getting ridiculous. It's a fast game -> deal with it.

I'm glad Collie appears to be OK. I was watching this live, and when he was laying there I couldn't help but think of Tyson Gentry - and I'm sure Kurt was also thinking about Tyson.

It looked like the first impact (by Samuel) made Collie's head pivot toward Coleman, making their heads hit before they would have if only Coleman had made contact. It doesn't deserve a fine, but it'll probably get one.

Finally got to see this play - and if anyone gets fined/suspended because of that hit then i'd gladly tell Roger Hitler to go fuck himself. How is Collie defenseless when he catches the ball, turns, and puts his head down to prepare for being hit? Not only that, but how does Coleman know where Collie's head is going to be? He didn't LOWER his head and try spearing the guy. Collie just turned into him at the very last second and honestly the helmet to helmet hit was even't that hard. If anything, Collie smacking his head on the ground as hard as he did is what knocked him out IMO.

The NFL did not hand out any discipline for the hit that gave Indianapolis wide receiver Austin Collie(notes) a concussion in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Collie was hit by safety Quintin Mikell(notes), then took a shot to the helmet from fellow safety Kurt Coleman?s(notes) helmet in the second quarter. Collie briefly lost consciousness and was taken off the field by stretcher.

Coleman was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
The NFL said because the helmet-to-helmet contact was a result of Collie being driven toward Coleman by Mikell?s legal hit, there will be no fine. The league said game officials have been instructed to err on the side of player safety, and when in doubt, ?penalize in situations such as this for unnecessary roughness.?

Nice to see the NFL use a little common sense here.
