Welcome to opening day … er opening night!!

There will be a smattering of high school football games across the state this evening with most of the state’s 700-plus football playing schools getting into action Friday and Saturday.

For the third year in a row, we will be presenting the Ohio High’s Man of the Year award in football. The inaugural winner in 2003 was Cleveland Glenville’s Ted Ginn Jr., now at Ohio State. The 2004 winner, Akron Hoban’s Tyrell Sutton, now at Northwestern, ended his career as the leading rusher in Ohio prep history.

Who will step forward to win Ohio High’s Man of the Year award as well as the Mr. Football award, presented annually by The Associated Press?

We have a worthy list of candidates to keep an eye on. Here we go:

ChrisWells8.gif
* Chris Wells, RB, Akron Garfield – The 6-2, 225-pound Wells rushed for 1,939 yards and scored 20 TDs as a junior. He is rated as Ohio High’s top prospect in the state and is considered one of the nation’s top five prospects overall by Scout.com. This Ohio State verbal says his goal is 3,000 yards. If he gets there, Garfield would be a certain playoff contender and Wells would likely have made his case.

RudyKirbus2.gif

* Rudy Kirbus, QB, Cleveland St. Ignatius – The 6-4, 200-pound Kirbus will have every opportunity to shine, piloting what could end up being the state’s best Division I team. He threw for 1,437 yards and 18 TDs last year. And he’ll be throwing to Notre Dame verbal (and longtime target) Robby Parris.

MikeMcGee.gif
* Mike McGee, QB, Columbus Brookhaven – The 6-1, 190-pound McGee was the driving force behind Brookhaven’s Division II state championship team with 1,902 yards passing and 22 TDs. If Brookhaven succeeds in jump up to Division I, McGee could get a serious look.

JahmalBrown2.gif

* Jahmal Brown, RB, Cleveland Benedictine – The 5-10, 190-pound Brown rushed for 1,894 yards and scored 21 TDs in helping lead Benedictine to the Division III state title.

MIlesSchlichterMiami.gif
* Miles Schlichter, QB, Washington C.H. Miami Trace – The 6-1, 210-pound Schlichter led Trace to a 10-0 regular season in 2004. He threw for 1,790 yards and 19 TDs and also rushed for 620 yards and four scores a year ago.

NateDavis3.gif
* Nate Davis, QB, Bellaire – The 6-3, 220-pound Davis threw for over 2,000 yards and 26 TDs in 2004. If Bellaire can again advance to the playoffs, Davis may be a name to keep in mind for postseason honors.

MikeHartline.jpg
* Mike Hartline, QB, Canton GlenOak – The 6-5, 190-pound Hartline threw for 2,400 yards and 16 TDs in 2004. If he can cut down on 18 interceptions and if GlenOak can solve crosstown rival Canton McKinley and go deep in the playoffs, Hartline might be a strong awards candidate.

ConnerSmith4.gif
* Connor Smith, OL, Cincinnati Colerain – Awards like this rarely go to linemen. They just don’t have those appealing stats. But the 6-5, 295-pound Smith is considered one of the nation’s top 25 college prospects. He has already verbaled to Ohio State.

KurtColeman.gif
* Kurt Coleman, CB, Clayton Northmont – The 5-11, 190-pound Coleman came up big for Northmont last year with 91 tackles and 10 interceptions. If he can lead Northmont to the playoffs, Coleman would have to be an awards candidate. He has already verbaled to Ohio State.

RossHoman.gif
* Ross Homan, RB-LB, Coldwater – Homan had over 140 tackles for Coldwater’s No. 1-ranked Division IV team. He also is a standout in the backfield. He has already verbaled to Ohio State.

DevonTorrance.gif
* Devon Torrence, junior, RB-DB, Canton South – The 6-1, 180-pound Torrence is the state’s top-rated junior and may be that class’ best chance to steal the award away from the seniors. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 20 touchdowns last year as a sophomore.

* Anthony Elzy, RB, Warren JFK – Elzy rushed for over 2,500 yards a year ago at JFK.

* Delone Carter, RB, Copley – Carter was in the 2,000-yard range last year for Copley.

Preseason Predictions

OK, with the games starting tonight, I will share my state championship picks and a dark horse in each division. Here goes:

Division I – Cleveland St. Ignatius gets a record 10th title, defeating Columbus Brookhaven in the title game. Cincinnati Moeller, which hasn’t been to the state final four since 1997, is my dark horse.

Division II – Dublin Scioto drops down from D-I. I like Scioto to down Avon Lake in the title game. My dark horse is Springboro with a ton of seniors.

Division III – Until somebody beats Cleveland Benedictine, this is their division. They go for three in a row and I think they beat Columbus DeSales to get it. My others to watch would be a toss-up between Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit and Mentor Lake Catholic.

Division IV – I like Coldwater to finally break through and win the state title, beating Youngstown Ursuline in the title game. My dark horse would be Bellaire – provided it can get past nearby Martins Ferry (finally).

Division V – It would be foolish to bet against St. Henry and Versailles, right? St. Henry hosts Versailles in the game of the year in this division on Oct. 21. St. Henry is the defending champ, but Versailles drops down from D-IV where it was the runner-up last year. I’ll take Versailles for the title. Hamler Patrick Henry is another one to watch.

Division VI – Defending champ Dola Hardin Northern is again the pick, but look out for D-V dropouts Delphos St. John’s and Liberty Center.

Good luck to your team in 2005 and he’s hoping they go all the way!

Dayton news is at the game tonite between Northmont and CJ.

Northmont was up 14-7 and it was about halftime.

Coleman had a fumble recovery. If he would of picked it clean off the turf he would of scored, but bobbled it a little and got tackled.

He was also open for fade route for a td, but the qb overthrew him.

Belton throws for 372 yards, four TDs in his first start

Like anyone starting his first varsity football game, Clay Belton made mistakes Thursday night.

"Nerve-wracking," said Northmont's 6-foot-6, 212-pound junior quarterback. "I've never experienced anything like that.

"I'm young, but I've got plenty of guys around me that are going to help me succeed. I've got to come out and do my job."

Belton more than made up for his mistakes. The left-hander threw four touchdown passes with an unofficial total of 372 yards.

He led Northmont to a 28-14 victory over Chaminade-Julienne in front of a standing-room only crowd of about 9,500 at Northmont Stadium.

"Shoot, for his first game as starting quarterback?" Northmont coach Lance Schneider said. "Overall it was a great job."

After spotting C-J a 7-0 lead, Belton hit Justin Watkins for three unanswered TD passes. Unofficially, the senior captain had nine catches, 168 yards and those three scores.

The game was sloppy at times. Both teams had three turnovers, several fumbles, costly penalties and dropped possible touchdown passes.

"It was a game where we made 12 mistakes and they only made 10," C-J coach Jim Place said. "They made eight big plays and we only made six. That was the difference in the game."

C-J's Matt Bruggeman, the hero of last year's last-second win at Welcome Stadium, hit Donovan Potter for a 19-yard TD pass and 7-0 lead. But Northmont stormed right back, going 78 yards in three plays and just 32 seconds.

The Thunderbolts next two scoring drives also were lightning quick. Northmont went 84 yards in four plays and 1:37. After a C-J fumble just before halftime, Belton hit Watkins twice more. That drive covered 43 yards in 10 seconds and put Northmont up 21-7.

Watkins thought maybe his new quarterback looked like former gunslinger Tyler Horner.

"The only difference is he's left-handed," Watkins said. "He's a great quarterback. He puts the ball on the money most of the time.

"He had some big shoes to fill so I knew he was going to be nervous. Our receiver corps knew if he made plays behind him he'd be all right."

Belton connected with five other receivers as Northmont kept control. But a long C-J drive and Bruggeman 1-yard dive near the end of the third quarter pulled the Eagles within 21-14.

Again, Northmont's QB responded. This time, it was a 9-play, 77-yard drive. On fourth-and-13 at C-J's 19, Belton hit Ryan D'Arcy for a touchdown with 10:32 left.

"We figured we'd go with a hitch-and-go there, take a shot," Schneider said. "It ended up we made the right call."

Bruggeman had 179 yards passing but C-J couldn't establish a running game. Northmont's A.J. Combest gave balance to the offense, racking up 76 yards rushing and 22 receiving.

The Eagles (0-1) still lead the series, 9-4. Northmont (1-0) has split the last six games in the rivalry. This result may help ease the sting of last year's defeat.

"They're such a great team," Watkins said. "We play them every year so it's a great rivalry. It feels so good to beat them."

Northmont (1-0) vs. Cin. La Salle (1-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: Lancer Stadium

2004 result: Did not play.

Outlook: Instead of a showdown against La Salle QB Tyler Sheehan, Northmont's Clay Belton will trade passes with junior Brian Jacob. That's because Sheehan (152 yards and four TD passes) broke his collarbone late in a 35-7 win over Sycamore. While Sheehan sits 8-10 weeks, Jacob will try to lead the Lancers back to the playoffs. Jacob will throw to Michael Reed, who had five catches for 97 yards against Sycamore. Lancers FB Bobby Burger (6-3, 235) and TB Isacc Green combined for about 200 yards. Northmont won its 10th straight regular-season game by defeating C-J 28-14. Belton had four TD passes and 347 yards passing and while A.J. Combest had 72 yards rushing. DB/WR Kurt Coleman was slowed by an ankle injury but should be near top form. Belton will want to stay away from DE Ben Martin, who had two of the Lancers' five sacks last week.

The Brian Jacob era at La Salle opened with a resounding thud Friday, as the Lancers, No. 7 in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, were drilled by Clayton Northmont.

Jacob, a junior quarterback, was 3-for-11 passing for only 36 yards and three interceptions. Jacob is playing in place of Tyler Sheehan, who will be out six to eight weeks after breaking his collarbone last week.

But with Northmont's Clay Belton torching the Lancers for 341 yards and six touchdown passes, quarterback was the least of La Salle's concerns.

"Tonight we got beat by a better team," said La Salle coach Tom Grippa. "They just kicked our butt."

The Thunderbolts (2-0) jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead on four touchdown passes from Belton.

The 6-foot-6 lefty authored a 16-play, 76-yard scoring drive to open the game before a pair of catch-and-runs from 56 and 36 yards.

Northmont's Justin Watkins had 11 catches for 195 yards and a score, while A.J. Combest (six catches for 45 yards) and Andy Wittman (five for 93 yards) had two touchdowns each.

The Bolts' offensive line did a fine job of keeping LaSalle defensive end Ben Martin off of Belton.

"We've never been in fear of the Cincinnati schools," said coach Lance Schneider. "La Salle's a great team, I know they're hurting a little bit, but ... our kids just executed the game plan to perfection on both sides of the ball."

The Bolts didn't punt until the final 30 seconds of the third quarter, while Jacob didn't complete a pass until the fourth quarter.

The lone bright spot for La Salle was senior fullback Bobby Burger, who had 14 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown.

"I thought our offense would do more, and we didn't," said Grippa. "They shocked us with their offense, and once we got behind, we weren't ready to come from behind."

I would have to think that's a pretty good win for Northmont. I know the Lancers are without their starting QB now, but any time a school from that area knocks off a GCL team that's pretty good.
